As you would have read in last week's College Newsletter, Anne O'Brien has taken some extended leave until
August and I will be the Acting Principal during this time. After replacing Adam Kelly as Assistant Principal -
Curriculum in 2018 and having filled the role of Principal here at MacKillop for eight weeks in 2017, I am
delighted to have the opportunity once again to be part of the leadership team at this great school. I look
forward to working with you and your sons and daughters as they navigate through their teenage years.
2019 COLLEGE THEME
Our College theme for 2019 is RESPECT. Whilst this is not a new theme at MacKillop, and in fact is often
considered by students and staff as our core value, 2019 will see it as front and centre of all we do and speak
about. At a recent assembly I spoke to the students about the three aspects of RESPECT that we will be
focusing on this year.
RESPECT for self, RESPECT for others and RESPECT for the environment
THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY
As our world gets busier and busier and the circle of influence
widens exponentially due to the power of the internet, it is so
important that young people appreciate the joy and support in
being involved in communities where they are known, loved and
cared for; where relationships are real and human contact and
conversation are essential elements. In the past week I have witnessed, on numerous occasions, community
interaction of our young men and women and their parents. Each time I have found myself smiling with pride.
Whilst they are not definitive I would like to single out four of those activities:
1. Sunday Night Parish Youth Mass saw Mrs Marg Gobius, Mr Rob Denham and a number of
students and staff provide wonderful music and hospitality at our St Agnes? Parish Mass. The
Parish provides a wonderful opportunity for community and all members of MacKillop
College are invited to be a part of all Parish Masses and activities.
2. Our swimming carnivals, so superbly run by Mrs Erin Denham, saw not just champion
athletes but champion young people participating, laughing, playing and encouraging their
peers. Working as a marshal on the day, it was lovely to have so many students ask me about
my weekend and just have informal conversations with staff and peers.
3. Parent engagement is a key element to any successful school and I have thoroughly enjoyed
the opportunity over the past couple of weeks to meet so many MacKillop parents. A large
number of parents have taken the opportunity to attend the Year 7 Parent Morning Teas and
Year 10 and 11 Information Evenings. I look forward to catching up with our Year 8 and 9
parents at our upcoming parent breakfasts in Weeks 4 and 5 and invite you to the Parent
Evening with David Kobler on Tuesday, 5th March. I really do encourage you to come along and
say hi, meet the staff and chat to other parents.

4. The NSW Junior State Cup Touch was held over the weekend and as a coach of junior touch
for 25 years I witnessed one of my proudest moments in junior sport; and it had nothing to
do with what happened during a game. Rather, it was the community spirit shown by a bunch
of teenagers, and the majority of those teenage boys, many of them young men from
MacKillop College. As the siren sounded for the finish of the U10 girls' final, where Port
Macquarie Juniors won their first final in 17 years, the older players and their mates who had
spent the weekend out there cheering on their friends, ran onto the field to embrace and
congratulate the litt le girls. Whilst I am sure the girls will long remember their win, I suspect it
will be all the more special and memorable because of the community support.
I look forward to being a part of many more MacKillop College community events in 2019.
GROWING GREAT TEENAGERS - #weThr ive
With the new wellbeing initiative #weThrive@MacKillop theme having really taken off I thought I might make
it a regular feature in my newsletter articles over the next 20 weeks to offer Cath?s tips 4 ?Growing Great
Teenagers?.
When we first discussed the #weThrive initiative words such as gardening, watering, planting were all
bandied around. Father D would often say to teachers in his beginning of year homily that we were the
planters of seeds - we may never see the fruits, nor baske in the shade of our labour. Likewise as parents
often it is not until our own children leave home, begin careers or have families of their own that we can sit
back and realise we did ok as mums and dads.
Below is the first of my tips, merely compiled after working, living with and coaching teenagers for 25 years.
Cat h?s t ips 4 ?Grow ing Great Teenagers?
1. Love t hem uncondit ionally - As humans we are flawed. As adults we have the wisdom of experience
but our teenagers are on the steepest of all learning curves. Social, emotional and physical growth are
all happening at rapid rates. Additionally they are navigating the shift from having had parents make
all their decisions to becoming the independent young men and women we all hope they will. They
will make mistakes, they will make poor choices. Let them know why it was a mistake, why it was a
poor decision but ensure they know, no matter what, that they are loved and you are there to help
them learn how to be good young men and women.

Does stress over studying sound familiar? Not organised? Unsure of the skills needed to study? Always procrastinating? No motivation to study?
If this is a description of anyone in your household then schoolwork, assessments and exam time will be a negative or stressful time. And, litt le success will be experienced from these times. We want all students to feel confident and capable around schoolwork and studying, and believe this is possible with a positive attitude, effort and support.
This year all students, families and staff have access to Enhanced Learning Educational Services? (ELES) Study Skills Handbook; an excellent resource to support all learners in their approach to schoolwork and study.
ELES is an online resource which provides a comprehensive and interactive guide to address study skill issues and concerns, and enable students to discover ways to improve their results at school and increase their confidence and sense of self.
We want students to thrive and believe the Study Skills Handbook will be an excellent aid to all of our students.
Here are the topics included in the handbook and instructions on how to access it:
We are very grateful to Charles Sturt University whose Community Partnerships Grant allowed MacKillop College to access the handbook for 2019.
Please note that a username and password are needed to login to the handbook. These codes are for the specific use of students and families of MacKillop College and we ask you not to pass our school?s details to other individuals or organisations as this is a breach of copyright.
All families will receive an email next week containing the username and password which will then allow full access to the ELES Study Skills Handbook.
I encourage you to have fun exploring the topics, using the hints and tips, taking the quizzes and enjoying success in your schoolwork and study.

YEARS 7-10 ABSENCE POLICY
ABSENCE DUE TO ILLNESS OR INJURY FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME
When a student is away from school for an extended period of time due to illness, we would like them to use the time to recuperate fully before their return to school. In light of this, a student should ask a friend in the class to collect worksheets and upon their return, complete any important activities and/or worksheets and take screen shots of class work as directed by the class teacher. Students can ask their teacher if the unit of work is online. If so, students can complete class work online.
If a student has an injury which stops them from attending school and they are otherwise fit and well, we ask that parents contact the school and work can be provided to keep the student as up to date as possible.
ABSENCE DUE TO FAMILY HOLIDAYS
When families decide to take holidays during school time, a subject teacher is not expected to set class work for the absent student. The student should engage in and enjoy the family?s experience of journey and discovery. The student should ask a friend in the class to collect worksheets and upon their return, complete any important activities and/or worksheets and take screen shots of class work as directed by the class teacher. It is expected that the student will complete this work in their own time. Students can ask their teacher if the unit of work is online. If so, students can complete class work online.

WELCOME SUNDAY
Each term the St Agnes Parish hosts several ?Welcome Sundays? at various masses within the parish. This past Sunday evening at the Youth and Family Mass (5.00p.m.) MacKillop College was responsible for the music and the hospitality following the service.
The musicians and singers, led by Mr Rob Denham and Mr Rob Geaney, added a wonderful depth to the celebration and remind us of the incredible musical talent that we have within our school.
I was very proud of all the wonderful volunteers who participated in the Mass by carrying out the readings and altar serving. We were very blessed to have Fr Joe, a guest priest in our parish, celebrate the Mass with us and share a very thought-provoking homily; reminding us that the price we pay for God?s love is to have faith in Him.
Following the Mass, several students and our YMO?s Georgia Hickling and Will Ayrton were on hand to give out ice blocks to both young and not so young to enjoy on a warm summer evening. The atmosphere outside the Church felt very welcoming as parishioners enjoyed their snack and the company of others.
Many of our students and others from around the parish then moved down to The Hub, where they participated in our parish Youth Group, ?Encounter? ably led by our wonderful YMO?s. This is a weekly event and all MacKillop students are welcome to attend.

HOW DOES ALPHA YOUTH WORK?
Alpha Youth is run over 9 weeks and is facilitated by Fr Peter, our Parish Youth Ministry Co-ordinator Vanessa Denham and the Youth Ministry Officers from each of our secondary schools.
In each session you eat food, watch a short inspirational video and discuss questions in small groups.
- Food has a way of bringing people together and building community. So, each session kicks off with some snacks and a catch up chat.
- The videos tackle core questions about life and faith from a Christian perspective. There are 13 episodes in the Alpha course. Each episode averages 23 minutes in length.
- Throughout each episode, there are discussion breaks. These breaks give everyone a chance to freely share thoughts and ideas in small groups.
- Along the way there are opportunities to experience worship through music and moments for prayer .
Alpha Youth is a great starting point for those young people who are seeking answers to faith questions, those who are discerning the direction of their faith journey and those who are simply interested in discussing the Christian faith with peers.

Connectedness ? the sense of caring for others and being cared for
? is one of the most powerful protective factors in mental health.
Schools are places of learning and socialisation for young people. Increasingly, the links between learning and students? mental health and wellbeing have also been recognised.
The value of positive day-to-day interactions across the whole school cannot be underestimated ? including school staff with students, staff with staff, students with students and staff with families.
These interactions as well as a whole school approach to developing positive relationships and connectedness to school are now well documented in literature and reported anecdotally. Research is now clear that these benefits not only promote positive mental health but also improve educational outcomes, including increased school attendance, staying at school longer and higher grades.
This term in PC, teachers and students are focused on getting to know each other more and building respectful relationships by promoting a positive environment where all community members feel included, valued and supported.
It is important that every student has at least one significant adult at school with whom they have a caring relationship ? someone who knows them well, knows their strengths, can ?check in? with them regularly and act as an advocate if necessary.
I encourage parents to ask their son or daughter the question:
?Who is your ?go t o? person at school??

PASTORAL CARE (PC) CLASS MORNING TEAS
Thank you to the many parents who were able to afford the time to participate in the Pastoral Care group morning teas.
SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Congratulations to all Year 7 students who contributed positively to the swimming carnival held on Tuesday. Their efforts helped create a positive experience of competition and social day. The swimming carnival is yet another important step for Year 7 students in taking on the culture of community, co-operation and team's
embodied at MacKillop College. Each individual student?s contribution to this carnival, and other events and opportunities, represents a step in maintaining and developing healthy culture of going beyond just the self and becoming one for others. Well done to the many, many students who gave their best at the swimming carnival.
Our College swimming carnival was an excellent day; full of sunshine, time spent with friends and loads of energy displayed in and out of the pool. The Year 7 non-attendance rate on this day was, however, disappointing. This is, unfortunately, not a simple coincidence. Whilst
there are obviously valid reasons for student absence, for many, this particular absence represents a choice to opt out. Deliberately opting out limits the individual?s benefit from their experience at the College. It can also damage the overall culture of the school.
YEAR 7 MASS AND REFLECTION DAY
All parents are welcome to celebrate Mass with Year 7 on Tuesday, 26th February. Mass will commence in St Agnes? Parish Church at 9.30a.m. This will be followed by a series of four rotations of learning activities in the Parish Hub precinct. Activities will relate to the current topic in the Religious Education curriculum as well as building students? experience of belonging and of team. Please note an invitation has been sent via email this week regarding the Mass and morning tea.

RECOGNITION OF STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
The newsletter is potentially a great place to recognise student achievement. Our students, your sons and daughters, are involved in a vast array of pursuits outside of the College. Many are achieving personal bests, gaining awards or competing successfully in their chosen activity/sport. Please take the opportunity to send me an email informing me of the achievement(s) of your son/daughter. I will then endeavour to give recognition of this achievement in the very next newsletter.
God bless.

The swimming carnival was the event that we engaged in this week and I need to say a big thank you to the parents and students - our attendance was really high and the contribution by the Year 10s on the day was outstanding. Special note to Vaughan Lick ley, Cian Mur t agh , Em ily Cur rey and Jared Hum phreys - they should be proud of how they led their houses and exercised their leadership.
This week in our tribe we have been working on our camp names, representatives, chants and logos, which will be unveiled in the coming weeks.
On Thursday a note went home regarding Retreat - if you haven't received it, a gentle reminder might be in order. The note has all Retreat information included and a permission note that needs to be returned by Friday, 1st March.
Thank you for your support and attendance at our Information Night; it is a pleasure to work with you as we navigate the year together.

Year 11 News
CONGRATULATIONS
I can not applaud Year 11 students enough for their smooth transition into senior school. They have applied themselves diligently to all aspects of the College. Reports from both subject teachers and Pastoral care teachers alike have all been very positive. The vibe about the playground is also very positive, with lots of students already taking up opportunities of support. Students are making great use of their study time and even lunch times to stay organised and up to date.
STUDY SKILLS AND STUDY SEMINAR
During study periods students have been asked to complete the first modules in the study skills handbook, which the vast majority have done. This will help enormously as time goes on and the demands of senior schooling increase.
Year 11 also attended a study skills seminar with Mr Kelly this week where he explained a number of different study strategies that students can use. He also explained the importance of the use of a study timetable; students will be filling out their own study timetables under the guidance of their PC teachers throughout the coming week.
YEAR 11 INFORMATION NIGHT
I would like to thank the parents and students for their attendance at the Year 11 information evening last week and encourage families to ensure that they are aware of all the assessment procedures and policies outlined in the assessment handbook. It was lovely to see so many families at the end mingling and chatting with one another and the teachers. As parents it is so important to have the support of your peers as you guide your children through their senior years of schooling.
SWIMMING CARNIVAL
What a fun day! Congratulations to Year 11 who have met one of my first challenges to them to ?show up! Step up and lead by example!" Year 11 were well represented at the carnival and their eagerness and co-operative spirit helped to make the day enjoyable for everyone. There was plenty of talent displayed at the carnival, but more inspiring was the level of participation and enthusiasm to be a part of our College community.

YEAR 12 STUDENT SEMINAR - PRESENTERS DAVID & KATIE KOBLER
On Monday of week 6 during periods 5 and 6, MacKillop College has invited David and Katie Kobler of Your Choicez to speak to our Year 12 students. David and Katie spoke to students in March last year and the feedback from students was very positive, with students saying the information was extremely relevant and helpful in their lives.
The seminars, both this year and last, are aimed to help young people:
- Consider their decisions around sex;- Evaluate the impact of media and marketing and the way it can be affecting their understanding of
themselves and the way they view relationships;- Understand the impact pornography can have personally and relationally;- Describe the key ingredients within a healthy relationship and be aware of the things to look for in an
unhealthy one;- Develop empathy in their online and offline interactions with others;- Have a correct understanding of consent;- Be empowered to make decisions that are right for them despite the pressure they may face from
peers;- Understand how to connect in a meaningful way with family and friends.- https://yourchoicez.com.au/
PARENT NIGHT - PRESENTERS DAVID & KATIE KOBLER
Further to this student event, I strongly encourage all parents to attend the Parent Night being held at our College on Tuesday, 5th March, Raising teens in a hyper-sexualised society. As stated on the Your Choicez website;
While the topic of sexuality and surrounding issues can be hard subjects to broach with teens, the information that is passed onto young people from reliable sources, such as caring parents, carers, teachers, youth workers, etc, is crucial. (https://yourchoicez.com.au/)
This parent night is aimed to inform and empower parents to be able to speak with their teenager from an informed and influential position.

DANCE CALLBACK EXCURSION
Year 11 and 12 Dance students headed down to Sydney on Friday, 15th February to attend Callback at the Seymour Centre. Callback showcases the exemplary Dance works performed by some of last year?s high achieving HSC Dance students across NSW. The matinee show featured a Q&A session with the HSC Dance Supervisor of Marking and past HSC Dance students, who provided a valuable insight into the preparation and commitment involved when studying HSC Dance. The students also participated in a 3-hour workshop organised by The Arts Units, where students engaged with other like-minded dancers in the areas of performance and composition. The students came away feeling inspired and very appreciative of this wonderful opportunity.

NSWCCC 22nd Blue Award Present at ion
Last week Mrs Anne O'Brien and myself attended the NSW Blue Award Presentation held in Wollongong. The annual NSW Blue Awards were established in 1997 to recognise the outstanding achievements of NSWCCC athletes across all sports. In 2018 over 163 students from our Catholic secondary schools gained selection in NSW All Schools teams and 36 gained selection in Australian teams.
We were extremely proud to see Ella Heeney, Julia Wil l iam s and Annika Toohey, students of MacKillop College, all receive a bar or blue award recognising their outstanding success in cross country, diving and hockey respectively. Not only were the girls successful recipients of the prestigious State awards, they also played an important role in the ceremony by reading the opening and closing prayers. Maintaining a commitment to sport at an elite level is never easy and requires humility, sacrifice and determination especially in Years 11 and 12 when trying to balance training and competition with academic demands.
Annika Toohey received her award for:
- RepresentingNSWCCC at NSW All Schools Hockey
- Receiving a medal at NSW All Schools Hockey Tri Series
- Representing NSW All Schools Hockey at School Sport Australia
- Representing Australia at the World Hockey Championships in South Africa.
Julia Wil l iam s received her award for:
- NSWCCC Bronze Medal
- NSWCCC Silver Medal
- School Sport Australia Silver Medal
The evening finished with the Vince Villa Award, the most prestigious award. This award seeks to recognise the most outstanding NSW Catholic School athlete (male and female) in 2018. It came as no surprise that Ella Heeney, world cross country champion, received this award. This award has only ever been presented to one other student from the Lismore Diocese. Ella is among some highly successful athletes who have gone on to pursue a professional career in sport including Jana Pittman, Jarrod Mullen and Campbell Graham to name a few.
Ella won the World Schools U18 Female Cross Country Championship in France, a fantastic achievement for a student who was also completing her Higher School Certificate that year. She also finished first in the NSW CCC, New South Wales All Schools and School Sport Australia events in 2018.
Ella is taking a gap year in 2019 to train and race, and in 2020 she will head to the US for College on a track and field scholarship.
Congratulations Ella, Julia and Annika; you should be extremely proud to receive a bar or blue award and for being recognised at a State level for excelling in your sport. You are fine ambassadors for MacKillop College, the Diocese of Lismore, NSWCCC, NSW All Schools and your country. We wish you all the best in your sporting pursuits well into the future.
Ella Heeney, Annika Toohey and Julia Wil l iam s af t er receiving t heir awards.
