At the end of this term we will present two students from each class with the “Spirit of Edmund Rice Award”. Edmund Rice was born in Callan in Ireland in 1762. When he was old enough, he went to work for his uncle in Waterford, a very wealthy town and seaport. His job was to supply food for the 1000 ships that left Waterford each year on long voyages. Edmund was very successful in business but he also loved dancing, singing, hunting and boat-riding. He dressed in the latest fashion. He attended Mass every day and he read and reflected on the Bible. Edmund also visited the poor in their homes. He married Mary Elliot and together they had a daughter whom they both loved. Edmund was devastated by his wife’s untimely death in a hunting accident. The tragedy made him think about what he could do with his life. He decided to start schools for poor children so they could learn to read and write and began holding classes at night in his shops. In 1802, he converted some stables into classrooms and two men joined Edmund in his community to teach with him. This community became known as the Christian Brothers. He built a monastery and school called Mt Sion and taught religion, writing, reading, arithmetic, book-keeping, geography, navigation, mechanics and grammar. Many other Christian Brothers schools began to be built across Ireland and eventually all over the world. Edmund Rice died in 1844 but his legacy lives on around the world in the schools that he founded. The Christian Brothers arrived in Gympie at the start of 1904 and opened their school in a building near the Villa fence. The building was transferred to the current site of St Patrick’s College in 1910. Edmund’s people, the Christian Brothers, had a creed that they lived and worked by. Edmund responded to the call of Jesus by identifying with the poor. His example evoked a deep awareness of God’s loving presence in all. Edmund Rice constantly promoted living justly, loving tenderly and walking humbly with each other and with God. ANZAC Day 2017

Thank you to all parents and staff for ensuring that there was agreat representation of students at both the Dawn Service andthe ANZAC Day March.

Prayer of St Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;where there is darkness, light;

and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to

console;to be understood, as to understand;

to be loved, as to love;for it is in giving that we receive,

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

Amen.

I hope you have an enjoyable week at St Patrick’s andplease feel free to approach me if you need moreinformation about any of these subjects mentioned in thenewsletter or for any assistance you may require.

RELIGIOUS LIFE OF THE SCHOOL andOTHER ADMINISTRATION MATTERS

Religious Life of the School

Our Easter Light,Jesus,

the Light of the world tells us,“Peace I give you. I leave you my peace.”

This will be the focus of our prayer and pastoral timeduring the Easter Season

Thank you very much to Mrs Major and 3M for leading the Prep– Year 3 classes in assembly prayer on Friday morning andfor helping us to reflect on the significance of ANZAC Day forus and for all Australians. We acknowledged and rememberedthat today we enjoy freedom because of the sacrifice of manyAustralians during times of war, like the ANZAC’s on the shoresof Gallipoli during World War 1.

The following prayer was shared with us, so that we mayremember the men and women who put themselves on the linein the hope that it would bring peace in our world:

We remember all who lost their lives through war.On ANZAC Day, we remember the people from Australia and

New Zealand

who fought during the First World WarWe pray for the airmen, sailors and soldiers who died in battle,

sacrificing their lives while on duty.We commemorate their bravery and pray for the families who

lost loved ones.We pray that you will help us to become instruments of your

peace in our world.Amen

During this season of Easter, we rejoice in the New Life theRisen Jesus gives us. When we reflect on the suffering andhardship which war and disharmony brings, Jesus’ resurrectionoffers us great hope. As Pope Francis recently said, “It isprecisely the Resurrection that offers us the greatest hope.” Hereminded us that this is because it allows our lives to becomeopen to God’s eternal future and to complete happiness whichleads us to living our everyday lives more confidently and toface each day courageously and with commitment. We mustnever forget that love is stronger than hate, hope is strongerthan despair and God’s peace has the power to relieve us ofour fears.

A reflection on PeaceBlessed are you Peacemakers

when you speak outagainst violence.

When you stand by thosewho are hurt or ridiculed.When you listen to those

you disagree with.When you give your time and energy

to help others.When you try to forgive

those who hurt you.When you love and open

yourself to others.
