School Improvement Our first Student Free Day was held on Friday 6 March. The focus for the day was Formative Assessment (Goal 1) in our Site Improvement Plan. The day began with staff learning together as a whole group and then in Curriculum Teams and later, Teaching and Learning Communities. The morning session focused on the intentional use of Formative Assessment within evidence based teaching practice. Five students from the Learning Cultures Team attended the session and provided a student perspective which was invaluable for staff.

In Curriculum Teams, staff collaboratively developed consistent Learning Intentions and Success Criteria for subject specific teaching and learning programs. Learning Intentions and Success Criteria are now an expectation for inclusion on Daymap to provide clarity for students about the intended learning and what success looks like.

During the afternoon, teachers worked in Teacher Learning Communities to collaboratively share their understanding of Formative Assessment strategies and to identify opportunities to share and observe teaching practice.

Finally, on behalf of the staff at Blackwood High School, I wish students and families a safe Easter and all the best for the holiday period.Sharon Goldman, Principal

On Wednesday 11 March 2020, seven of our Aboriginal Students participated in Nunga Tag at South Adelaide Football Club. We played several games of touch football against Wirreanda Secondary School, Hamilton Secondary College and Seaford Secondary College. We were lucky enough to gain team member Dean Widders, NRL Anaiwan Indigenous Player.

Students had the chance to make smoothies using a push bike for power and learn and collect resources about important topics such as health and wellbeing. Over a dozen schools attended the event as well as the wider community including different organisations and universities. It was a fantastic bonding experience to support our indigenous students to get to know each other in a cultural setting. Renee Daish, Aboriginal Education Teacher

Middle School updateBlackwood High School’s Annual Year 8 Sports Day was a huge success, with students across eight Care Groups getting to know each other through a fantastic day. 8B took out the competition, winning in organised events on both track and field such as the vortex, long jump, high jump, shotput, and a range of running races. Thank you to all of the teachers and staff involved, and the Peer Support Leaders for helping the day run smoothly. The Year 8 Pool Day was held on 7 February, and was a great success all round. The Year 8 students along with their Care Group teachers and Peer Support Leaders caught the train down to Unley Outdoor Pool in the morning to compete in a range of fun team building activities and competitions. Some of the events included relays, bombing competitions, water polo tournaments, treasure hunts, and, of course, races. A special thanks goes to Sam Thomson and Renee Daish, and all of the Care Group teachers for making Pool Day not only possible, but a great time for all involved. Congratulations to 8B, who once again came out on top, winning the day, but well done to all of the Care Groups and students who actively participated. Isabelle Augur, Year 11 Peer Support Leader

So far Year 9 has been a really good experience! There has been many challenges that include work, organisation and being open minded about different opportunities. It has been good knowing that we have had more input in our choice of subjects this year. It has made it more enjoyable and flexible around the way we work in lessons and our practicals. We have already had new opportunities around the school such as sporting events, leadership groups and other extra curricular activities. We are all looking forward to a more hands on and enjoyable Term 2!Ella Holmes, Year 9 Student

Year 8 Coastal ExcursionAs part of the Year 8 Interdisciplinary English/Humanities unit, students investigated coastal landforms and landscapes. On Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 February, students visited Seacliff and Brighton beaches. The excursion included a variety of Geography activities including locating and describing key environmental management strategies in use at both Seacliff and Brighton beaches. Students used a field booklet as they worked across four stations at each location including: measuring the beach and dune formations, locating management strategies used along the beach, measuring the waves and longshore drift along the Adelaide coastline and observing the use of the beach. Students used measuring tapes, timers, ping-pong balls and cameras to complete tasks at the stations which would help them back at school complete their coastal comparative report. Sadly, Wednesday’s group of students were rained out and were unable to complete all activities at the beach, however teachers were impressed at the engagement by all as they worked through a virtual tour of the beaches and completed activities back at school. Students conducted themselves fantastically and represented Blackwood High School well, even receiving comments from community members. Renee Daish and Charlotte Twizell, Leaders, Middle School Learning Communities

Senior School updateIn a time of such uncertainty, as we look back on some of the events that have taken place this term in the Senior School, they seem like they happened so long ago. We have been fortunate enough though to have had our students take part in some fantastic opportunities before the social distancing became a necessity.

Senior Student Leadership TeamOn 18 February, we had a whole school assembly with Leadership as the theme. At this assembly we had our Dux of 2019, Alina Tairli, come back to the school to address staff and students and give her perspective on her ‘secrets for success’. The overarching theme of Alina’s speech was for students to do what they were passionate about and to look for a pathway that they will love. She believes that if those two ingredients are there then success will surely follow.

At the assembly we also inducted our Senior School Leadership Team. Our newly appointed Head Prefects and Prefects were introduced to the school community and our Head Prefects ran the assembly. Our Senior School Leadership team are as follows:Head Prefects – Scarlett Partridge-Powell, Austin FarrugiaDeputy Head Prefects – Stephanie Bell-Kristophe, Matthew ParkerPrefects – Mikayla Heddle, Mya Drakos, Laura, Megan Haskins, Lara Keen, Mila Dowling, Vee Cao, Riley Newall, Josiah Hor, Cedric Mends

Our Senior School Leadership Team have already been put to work with many attending the GRIP Leadership Conference at the Entertainment Centre and our Head Prefects starting to work as part of a network of student leaders from schools in the local area which was initiated by students from St Johns College.

Save a Life Drivers ProgramOn Wednesday 4 March, we held the ‘Save a Life Parent Evening’. The Save a Life Foundation is funded by the Bendigo Bank and is focused on giving tips and information to keep our young people safe as they embark on their journey of getting their drivers licence. The main part of the Save a Life Program is for students to take part in a session where they get to experience a simulator that will place them in a variety of dangerous situations and then gives them the opportunity to discuss how they will handle themselves. All Year 10 students will hopefully be able to take part in this in November.

The Parent Evening focused on what it means to be a good driving supervisor for our Learner driver children, how to choose a good driving instructor and how to select a car that will keep our children safe. The presenter also outlined what he’ll be going through with our students when he runs the sessions at the school later in the year. It was a really valuable session for the parents/caregivers involved and will hopefully go a long way towards keeping our children safe as they take to the roads in the next year.

Year 12 FormalThe Year 12 Formal was held on 6 March at the Hilton Hotel. It was amazing to see all of our Year 12 students dressed to impress and we loved seeing them have such a great time. The dance floor was packed for most of the night and the photo booth got a thorough workout. Congratulations go to Matthew Loan and Susan Carraill who did a fantastic job in organising the event. I must also congratulate the Student Formal Committee consisting of Alysha Johnson, Mara Beltman, Scarlett Partridge-Powell and Steph Bell-Kristophe. They did an amazing job organising menus, table placements, decorations and playlists. Alysha even spent over 70 hours of her own time sewing sashes that were given to the award winners. Well done girls!!

As we move forward into the next term, I would like to reassure parents/caregivers that Matthew Loan, Kate Young, Andrew Cavallaro, Argie Buesnel and I will be here to support your children in any way we can. Their ongoing success and academic achievement is the number one priority for us so please contact us whenever you have concerns. Stay safe and well.Ashley Robinson, Assistant Principal Senior School

Year 11 Food and Hospitality - Open Night Virtual TourThe Year 11 Food and Hospitality students have worked hard on preparing a range of tasty foods for families to try during Open Night. However, as life changes rapidly, our Year 11 students had to make significant last minute changes. This was one of our Food and Hospitality students’ major assessment tasks and all of their marvellous food was still prepared and presented; we have videoed some of this to be part of a virtual tour of Blackwood High School. The teams worked efficiently and their food was professionally displayed in a range of different styles. Many of the staff came over to sample the foods and provide valuable feedback to the students. All the students are to be commended for dedication and determination to still deliver a professional product. Whilst students were looking forward to seeking feedback from, and sharing their experiences with the public, they still learnt a lot from the experience.Toni Hughes, Food and Hospitality Teacher

On Wednesday 11 March, a group of local and international students travelled to Victor Harbor for the day. The 2020 new International students and their local buddies enjoyed perfect weather as they explored Urimbirra wildlife park and Granite Island.Karyn Jones, Leader, International Student Programs

Here are some comments from the students: I’m really happy for this trip. Both the wind along the way and the scenery at the destination were amazing. Especially the ocean in Victor Harbor was so magnificent. It was bright for our eyes. The sea breeze was very comfortable and cool and I got to know new friends and also have a better understanding of Australia. I-Chieh (Jay)- Taiwan When we arrived at the zoo, we saw a lot of Australian animals like Kangaroos, Echidnas, Koalas, Emus and many other animals. The most interesting thing was that we were able to touch and feed them. In Victor Harbor the first thing I saw was the Horse drawn Tram and the place to keep the horses. We walked across a long bridge called a causeway between the harbour and the island. We climbed and walked around the island to see the beautiful view. It was a wonderful trip and it was a good opportunity for the international students to make some new friends. I liked it very much. Thien An (Jim) – Vietnam

At lunch time we ate fries and fish. That was delicious for me. And we got to know each other. We felt very happy at that time. Shangke (Kyle) –China

There were many birds in the Zoo, but the Owl was the most impressive. The smell of the sea in Victor Harbor was so refreshing and the view was so beautiful. I had a sandwich at Subway. It was my first time ordering food so I was nervous but fortunately it was delicious. Hoi Kiu (Cyan) – Hong Kong

Arts updateDrama Excursions in MarchWe were very fortunate this year to be able to take part in the massive offerings in the Adelaide Festival Program for 2020. All our current Drama students from Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 were given an opportunity to see a Festival show and to engage in the work of some of the world’s best performance artists. Middle School Drama witnessed the beautiful performance of Dimanche and the delightful physical comedy The Artist. Our Senior students saw The Doctor and were blown away with this gripping thriller which raised more questions than it answered around medical ethics, identity politics and freedom of religious issues. Brigitte Esvelt, Drama teacher

Here are a few snippets of some of our student’s responses to their theatrical experiences:DimancheIcy. Cold. Alpine. These words describe the first setting of the play, Dimanche. A toy van drives over an immobile actor posing as snow covered mountains. Dulled music plays, as if you were outside the van hearing it in real-life. Little houses with twinkling lights and puffing chimneys dot the landscape, moving as the van moves, and trees help to break up the snow-covered landscape. A team of three people is journeying to report in this frozen landscape. Lucinda Year 9

The sound and lighting in the play was spectacular, from the slow fade in lights at scene changes to the ice cracking noises under the explorer’s feet. These elements, paired with excellent acting and set design, created one of the best performances I have ever seen. The videos playing on the projector of the footage of the camcorder was a great addition and helped set the scene to the amazing performance and added that first person feel. Sabian, Year 9

There was not much talking in this show and when there was, it was in French or Dutch. They were able to create a show that was visual with no need for talking. Emotions were shown, talking wasn’t necessary throughout the really interactive show. Dimanche demonstrated clear messages about climate change through use of emotions, props, puppetry, movement and the combination of live and recorded work. Emma, Year 9

The Artist Drip, Drip, Drip. The stage is prepared for the goofy and fun-loving physical theatre performance at the Adelaide Festival that is The Artist. As we observe Thom Monckton stumble around the stage, he shows us the frustrations and irritants of being an up and coming artist. With no talking except the occasional gibberish, this spectacular show discovers a way to turn an annoying dilemma into a comedy act. He shows the procrastination and lack of motivation an artist faces before creating work and he exaggerates his every problem. It’s a perfect and captivating performance and, even better, it presents some real-life nuisances that we can all relate to, including two memorable scenes with an audience painter and a dark canvas monster, the most chilling act. Another scene that stuck by me as I left the theatre was, as I call it, the Poker Scene. Take that joke how you wish. The Artist had set up a blank canvas, fiddled with his brushes and set up his fruit bowl ready to paint. Still, he couldn’t find the inspiration to start, so he busied himself with his usual goofing off. This time, he meddled with his canvas, poking at it, and making shapes with his fingers. At first, some comedic imagery. Slowly, the music became distorted and the lights dimmed, leaving the audience watching in anticipation. What dominos was Thom going to topple with this creepy music and poking of the canvas? There was another message, though this time pushed more forcefully into our faces as he used his finger-poking to form a face. Two eyes, one crooked mouth. Visually, it was terrifying. Symbolically, equally as terrifying. It began to chew and gnaw at the air. Art is time-consuming, it eats away at you the more you feed it. Drew, Year 10

The artist interacts with the audience a number of times through out this play. He has the ability to not make the play boring at all, even when it is only one singular person since something in the backround is going on. Even if it is the water dripping in the backround, there is always an interesting part of the artist and the story always added up. He looked like a crazy man and looked very bored and hadn’t gone outside for a while. Nick, Year 10

Year 9 Performing Arts ShowcaseYear 9 Performing Arts students who have been studying Drama, Music or Dance had the opportunity to present practical group work to their peers in an informal performance.

Drama students developed a short commercial about a new invention and performed it in an unusual way as a one-word-at-a-time advertisement. Students made their props and demonstrated the use of their invention to the audience. Memory, team work and use of dialogue were important skills that were demonstrated by these humorous pieces.

The Dancers performed their group Hip-Hop choreographies that were designed, staged and costumed by the students. Students that were absent have had their group work filmed for assessment. The Dancers also performed the class Hip-Hop/Funk choreographed Dance work.

Music students who presented their class work, included Cloud performing a piano solo, The Scientist by Cold Play and a duo performance, vocals by Cassandra and saxophone accompaniment by Olivia performing Dance Monkey by Tones and I.

Year 9 Dance ExcursionThe Year 9 Dance class attended a Festival performance to view a Dance work collaboration by two Dance crews, Lady Rocks from Paris, France and Riddim Nation from Sydney.

The work titled Two Crews explores crew culture. The performance, aims to give the audience a cross cultural perspective on Hip-Hop as a global culture and how that gives voice to minorities and the marginalised. The performance explored two questions:• How do a hip hop female group from Paris and a multi-cultural group based in Sydney exist in a separate

space?• What happens when they come together?

In exploring these questions, the Two Crews performance deals with the issues of gender, place, shared history and Dance lineage. The class has been learning about Hip-Hop culture including technique and choreography culminating in group choreographed routines and a class choreographed work. Students will be writing their own reviews as a newspaper article or online article.

The class also visited the Doll’s House exhibition in the Rundle Mall, a life-sized, three-storey Doll’s House by Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi, who has been transforming public spaces across the world since 2000. It has been created only once before, outside the Palais de Tokyo Art Museum in Paris. Students enjoyed exploring this creative space.Katrina Constantopoulos, Leader, The Arts

Special Interest Football Program SANFL Umpire sessionsThe Boys and Girls Football Program students participated in umpire development sessions this term. SANFL Umpire Development Officer, Andrew Crosby, delivered sessions involving decision making, umpire movement during a game, signals, positioning and goal umpiring. Andrew is an AFLW and SANFL umpire. Students thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and will now be equipped to umpire at their local club and school games. Janet Bradley, Special Interest Girls Football Program Teacher

Student feedback included:Andrew’s course was very helpful and helped me to achieve a higher level of confidence in football umpiring. I thought that all the drills were relevant and helped me understand umpiring to a better level. The drills that we participated in were fun and engaging which was also helpful towards our learning. It’s a good course that the football program includes. It gives us the perspective of an umpire because all we’ve ever known is a player’s perspective on the game. So now knowing both we have developed our skills and understanding of the game and grown in our confidence. It’s a great opportunity that I’m glad we got. Andrew is great in the sessions and we all thoroughly enjoy them.Indigo Homersham Learning the basics in AFL umpiring can help in the future if any of us want to take an umpiring course. It also helps with our personal football as we can recognise the hand signals of umpires and become aware of their role in a football game. Andrew is a high-level umpire who has the authority to teach us these skills and show us his knowledge of the game.Charlie Scutchings

Year 11 SANFL SeminarThe Year 11 Football class, as part of their coaching unit, were fortunate to have SANFL Senior Head Coach Jarrad Wright run a seminar on Wednesday 19 February. The students gained a valuable insight into what it takes to be an SANFL Head Coach. Jarrad spoke about a range of topics including his daily operations, weekly schedule, communication and feedback, relationships, game plans and much more. The students then had the opportunity to create a 20-minute session in small groups with one of those sessions being run for the remaining of the lesson.

Year 9 Adelaide Oval ExcursionThe Year 9 Football class went on their annual excursion to Adelaide Oval on Wednesday 4 March. Students were guided around the oval gaining valuable knowledge and insight into the history with a behind the scenes look at the ground, including going into the Coach’s Box and change rooms. We then had a SANFL representative present to the class in the Away Change Rooms on ‘what makes a good coach’. The students had a great time and represented the school in a positive manner.
