Strain or Tension Insulator

Strain or tension insulators are designed for handling mechanical stresses at angle positions where there is a change in the direction of the line at termination of line.

Suspension insulator are arranged in a horizontal position.

Take the pressure off a conductor at the end of a transmission line, at a sharp corner or curve or over long river crossings

Strain insulators are typically used for higher voltage transmissions.

STRAIN INSULATOR

When there is a dead end ofthe line or there is corner orsharp curve, the line issubjected to greater tension. Inorder to relieve the line ofexcessive tension, straininsulators are used. For lowvoltage lines (< 11 kV)

Page 7: tension @ strain insulator.pptx

However, for the high voltagetransmission lines, strain insulator consists ofan assembly of suspension insulators asshown in Figure. The discs of strain insulatorsare used in the vertical plane. When thetension in lines is exceedingly high, at longriver spans, two or more strings are used inparallel.

Advantages of Tension/Strain Insulator1. Each strain disc is designed for normal voltage rating 11KV(Higher voltage rating 15KV), so by using different numbers of discs, a strain string can be made suitable for any voltage level.

2. If any one of the disc insulators in a strain string is damaged, it can be replaced much easily.

3. Mechanical stresses on the strain insulator is less since the line hanged on a flexible strain string.

Page 10: tension @ strain insulator.pptx

Disadvantages of Tension/Strain Insulator1. Strain insulator string costlier than pin and post

type insulator.

2. Strain string requires more height of supporting structure than that for pin or post insulator to maintain same ground clearance of current conductor.

3. The amplitude of free swing of conductors is larger in strain insulator system, hence, more spacing between conductors should be provided.
