Tenerife

Welcome to our brand new trade supplement with Travel Bulletin. In this supplement we want to give you an update on all that is going on in our diverse island and to

help you to select the right product for your clients. There has never been a better time to go to Tenerife with so many

new attractions and places to see, as well as the old favourites. Andthis has also been reflected in the increase in visitors the island hasrecently seen from the UK market – experiencing an 11% increase in2011 on the previous year.

We are equally looking forward to the year ahead and have someexciting plans in place to work even closer with our trade partners inthe UK – including trade shows, training, exhibitions, meetings andevents. We will be in touch soon with further details.

Although well-known for its beaches and year-round sunny climate,Tenerife is full of surprises. At the Tenerife Tourism Corporation ouraim is to communicate the “real” Tenerife to the UK market, whichremains the largest source market for the island. Although mostBritish people tend to head to the beaches of the south, Tenerife alsooffers a wide range of holiday options, from rural breaks in hiddenvillages to relaxing holidays in luxury resorts.

It is the unrivalled diversity and idyllic climate that makes ourisland so special and means that our visitors can enjoy the greatoutdoors at any time of year. Through our marketing campaignsand trade activities, including the promotion of our online trainingscheme – TenerifeXpert.com – we will aim to illustrate the fulloffering of the island.

From cultural city breaks to secluded retreats, from outstandingvolcanic landscapes and pre-historic forests to lush bananaplantations and vineyards and from water activities (including diving, sailing, whale-watching and kite-surfing) to land activities (includingclimbing, caving, star-gazing and mountain biking), Tenerife reallydoes have it all. Add to this the chance to sample delicious authenticCanarian cuisine in some of the traditional small villages of the northand some of Tenerife’s fine wines in the many vineyards scatteredaround the island as well as the friendly and welcoming people, andit soon becomes clear why we are so proud of our island.

We thank you for your continued support and look forward towelcoming you to Tenerife soon!

It’s not all sun, sea and sangria in Tenerife, you know. Theisland’s interesting landscape, temperate climatecombined with trade winds from the Atlantic make the

island a haven for holidaymakers who can’t bear to chillax ona sunlounger for longer than 15 minutes.

Tenerife is an island of challenging altitudes, so it’s theperfect place for health and fitness enthusiasts to train withvarying heights from sea level to 3,718 metres – and all justwithin four hours of the UK.

From hiking up Mount Teide to reeling in Atlantic bluemarlin on a deep-sea fishing trip, here is a round-up of whatadrenaline junkies can get up to on the island to get their fix.

Walking/hikingTenerife is home to the volcanic landscape that is MountTeide, which, at 3,718 metres above sea level, also happensto be the highest peak in Spain. The volcano and itssurrounds comprise the Teide National Park, which is now apopular tourist attraction. There are more than 600 miles of

approved nature trails around the dense laurisilva forest andgrazing area near Mount Teide. Those who want to ascendto the peak by foot can find the path that leaves from thearea of Montaña Blanca, next to the road. The easier optionis to save on the shoe leather and jump in the cable car, which runs every day. Access to the peak requires a permitwhich can be applied for via reservasparquesnacionales.esOther options? The Anaga Rural Park offers a network offootpaths and so do the Teno Rural Park and the Chasnafootpath. For a really spectacular hike, try the Barranco deMasca in the Masca Gorge.

ClimbingTenerife ticks all the right boxes when it comes tolandscapes suited for climbing. That volcanic terrain, with itscrevices, walls and ledges, provides the perfect canvas forclimbers of all abilities. While there are a number of routes, the most established are Barranco de Arico and Cañada delCapricho in the heart of the Teide National Park.

Activity holidays

Mountain bikingIf you have clients who are keen mountain bikers, but havenever taken their passion for travelling on two wheelsoverseas, why don’t you suggest they combine a holidaywith their hobby and head to Tenerife? Its variety oflandscapes, from mountainous and volcanic to dense, almost rainforest like in the north, provide a variety ofdescents. The Corona Forestal around Teide National Parkand the hills around La Esperanza boast some of the bestcycle paths and offer tracks to suit beginners and the moreexperienced. The Mercedes and Anaga mountains in thenorth have more challenging routes.

Star-gazingInspired by the Wonders of the Universe? Then Tenerife is agreat place to find out if you know your big dippers fromyour orions. The island’s clear skies have made the island thehome of the International Astrophysics Institute with variousobservatories and telescopes. In fact, Tenerife is the home ofthe largest European solar telescope, GREGOR.

The best conditions for star-gazing can be found in theTeide National Park and there are a number of guided star-gazing excursions for visitors to the island.

Water sportsThe trade winds from the Atlantic that make the island adesirable temperature all year round also create the perfectconditions for surfing in all its forms.

Slaves to these disciplines head to the surfing capitals ofEl Medano and El Cabezo in the south of the island. Thesetwo beaches are among the most important on theEuropean circuit when it comes to windsurfing competitions.

El Medano is more suited to sailing, and over recent years, has carved out a niche as the kitesurfers’ paradise.

Scuba divingIf your client is keen to get up close to marine life, Tenerife isa great place to start their diving days, without having tofork out for a flight to far-flung destinations. There is anetwork of diving centres around the island that cater for alllevels from beginners to advanced divers.

Whale and dolphin watchingAre you under the impression that to spot a whale or two,you have to splash out on a holiday to a long-hauldestination? Well, think again. When it comes to seeingthese magnificent mammals in their natural environment,Tenerife is a great place to head to as there are colonies ofpilot whales and bottlenose dolphins that can beobserved all year round.

Do you know your birdie from your eagle or when to use a

wood or an iron. The chances are if you do, then you are

likely to know a bit about golf and how big the island of

Tenerife is on the golf scene in Europe.

With an average temperature of 22C all year round, a large

number of affordable flights, special rates for greens during

the summer season and golf courses surrounded by

mountains on one side and stunning coast on the other,

Tenerife is a golfers’ paradise.

There are eight courses in total, and some have hosted

major tournaments such as the PGA European Tour, so the

var iety of courses are wide and can cater for any golfer

from Bubba Watson to Happy Gilmore.

And while it really tops the leader board when it comes to

keeping golfers of all abilities happy, Tenerife has plenty to

keep the golfing widow satisfied too – think luxury spas

and designer shopping in Santa Cruz for starters.

While its temperate climate makes Tenerife the perfect beach holiday destination any time of year, there is a lot more to the Canary isle than its

sandy beaches, turquoise seas and volcanic landscapes.

Culture vulturesTenerife capital Santa Cruz is stacked full of Spanishcharm with buildings, squares and cobbled streets thathouse a number of historical treasures. These include: theIglesia de la Concepcion church, which was first built in1500 and was the centre of the original town of SantaCruz, which until 1859 was just the port for the nearbytown of La Laguna. Other must-see sights include: theIglesia de San Francisco church, squares such as the PlazaPríncipe de Asturias or the Plaza de La Candelaria and thetown market Nuestra Señora de África. A visit to Tenerifeisn’t complete without taking in the iconic Auditorio deTenerife in Santa Cruz, The auditorium has become anarchitectural symbol of Santa Cruz, due to its impressiveprofile. To get the real feel for the building, take in one ofthe performances in its packed programme of culturalevents. Another impressive building in Santa Cruz is theTenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA), which is the culturalheart of the city.

When you are heading out of the city, head to Puertode la Cruz to indulge yourself in the island’s botanicalgardens. Originally, conceived to house the flora boughtback from the Spanish colonies of South and CentralAmerica in the 18th century. Other locations on theculture check list include San Cristóbal de La Laguna, thevibrant university town, which is also a UNESCO WorldHeritage Site. La Laguna is perhaps the most historic cityon the island and was originally the capital. Points ofinterest are that it is packed full of tiny cobbled streetsthat house gems of Renaissance architecture, it was thefirst city in the world built on a geometric grid, and sinceits World Heritage status, a number of the city’s buildingshave undergone a restoration.

GastronomyWhile Michelin-starred restaurants don’t spring to mindwhen people think about Tenerife, the Canary isle isstarting to establish itself as a force to be reckoned withgastronomes.

The restaurants on the island specialise in simple yetdelicious, traditional dishes that use fresh locally-producedingredients that the island has a good reputation for suchas potatoes, tomatoes and bananas. Tenerife boasts a wideselection of restaurants, varying from high-end outletsoffering full-on, fine-dining experiences to rustic eateries.Several renowned Spanish chefs are also helping to raise

the profile of the island in the foodies arena by offeringinnovative dishes on menus of restaurants that specialise infine dining.

Wildlife and natureTenerife lays claim to having some of the most variedlandscapes in the world. From the laurisilva subtropicalforests of the north to the desert volcanic moonscape inthe centre of the island, Tenerife has an environment thathas plenty to offer keen nature enthusiasts, who lovenothing more than to explore their surroundings. Its variedlandscape provides a haven for a rich and diverse wealth ofbird species, which makes the island popular with the bird-watching community. The blue chaffinch, the cory’sshearwater, the dark-tailed laurel pigeon, the Tenerife

kinglet, the great spotted woodpecker, the blue tit, therock dove and the osprey are just some of the species thatinhabit the island. And of course, there is the canary. Also, there is a network of footpaths on the island on whichnature lovers can encounter some of the island’s otherendemic species, including lizards, geckos and skinks.

Whale and dolphin watching is also a jewel in Tenerife’scrown, with the strait that separates the island from LaGomera being home to one of the world’s most importantcolonies of short-finned pilot whales and the largestbreeding area of bottlenose dolphins.

Hip and trendyTenerife is really starting to make its mark with theachingly hip and trendy jetset. The growth of music

festivals and chi-chi hotels on the island is helping toattract the glamourois crowd.

The right accommodation is also key to attracting theshabby chic jetset, and while Tenerife has its fair share offive-star resorts, it also has a number of boutique hotels inGarachico, Santa Cruz and Costa Adeje that ooze style.Nightlife is also a big part of being hip and trendy, andTenerife doesn’t fall short in that department with anabundance of restaurants, bars, pubs and night clubs.

Health and wellbeingThe days are long gone when the menus at hotels spaswere limited to a few beauty treatments and the oddSwedish, or Thai, massage.Health and wellbeing holidays are a big growth industrynow. No longer just something to pass the time on holiday, clients pushed to the brink of exhaustion by modern-daylife looking to soothe away their stresses and strains onholidays that will get their mind, body and spirit back ontrack. Spa resorts in Tenerife, have stepped up a gear interms of the treatments they offer by making the most ofthe island’s natural source of volcanic minerals and aloevera, as well as tropical fruits, which are often used inexfoliation treatments. While massages and beautytreatments are to be expected, spas in Tenerife are nowoffering a wide range of programmes that incoporateholistic relaxation methods from the east including yoga, pilates, meditation and ayurvedic treatments.
