We all know when we belong to asynagogue we’re frequently called upon forfinancial support beyond annual dues becausedues, alone, cannot possibly support a temple. Here at Temple Beth Israel, like all othertemples, we must rely on fund raising eventsas well as the Kol Nidre Appeal to ensure itscontinuing vitality. Many temples also establishmore ambitious opportunities for giving similar to what wehave begun with our Leadership Circle.

We recently hosted a temple brunch for those whocontributed to our first annual Leadership Circle Campaign. We wanted to show our appreciation and also offer a clearsense of what the additional financial support means forTemple Beth Israel.

Because of this generosity, we are able to enhanceour creative and moving spiritual experiences. We will alsocontinue to attract the best and brightest speakers, scholarsand musicians. We’ll learn, we’ll question, we’ll sing, we’lldebate.

A vibrant temple also affords the opportunity to sharethe human condition whether it be the joy of good news orthe sadness that can visit us...all the more meaningful becausewe are not alone.

I’m particularly excited by our outreach programs. The extra funds enable us to continue to respond to the hungry, the homeless, the hospitalized and the homebound. We feedthe children of Booker Middle School healthful foods that, for some, are the only nutritious meal of the day. We providenecessities to hospitalized veterans of the Iraq andAfghanistan conflicts. Our synagogue helped establish anafterschool program in the impoverished Newtown area ofSarasota. On Yom Kippur when we choose not to eat, weprovide food for those who have little to eat. Every Tuesdaymorning homebound elderly are transported to our templefor companionship, discussion and lunch. I can go on.Successful fundraising programs have enabled us to expandupon these initiatives.

I am always reminded of how amazing it is that we’rehere sharing the temple experience. We all know the miracleof the survival of our people. We also know how important itis to continue our Jewish conversation for ourselvesindividually and for our community.

There is absolutely no doubt that those willing to leadthe way financially have made it possible for Temple BethIsrael to do just that and so much more. There is an oldYiddish saying: “Hands that work and hands that pay are ofttimes holier than lips that pray.” Temple Beth Israel is indeedfortunate to have so many congregants who are willing to doit all.Elaine Weill, President

THE CURRENCY OFMEMBERSHIP A member of our congregationrecently told me about a woman she’d met at a function inSarasota. It turned out the two knew several people incommon and had even belonged to the same women’sorganization in Chicago at some point. When the womanshared that she lives on Longboat Key, the Temple membermentioned Beth Israel. This prompted an enthusiasticresponse, “That’s my congregation. That’s where I go.” However, although she may possess affection for theTemple, although she regards it as her congregation andalthough she may go to Beth Israel often for services andprograms, she is not an actual member of the congregation.Furthermore, she has never made a financial contribution tothe synagogue she apparently holds in high regard but, nonetheless, appears to take very much for granted. Is this unwillingness to support the Temple a reflection ofa sense of entitlement, blindness to community responsibilityor simply a way to derive benefit without having to provideanything in return? Learning of this woman’s relationship to Beth Israel gaveme pause. Fortunately though, two other recent experienceshighlighting a felt sense of connection to the Temple provedencouraging. One occurred when I noticed a woman I didn’t recognizecome into the Temple office. After introducing myself, sheinformed me she visits Longboat Key for a month each winterand enjoys the congregation. Though not inclined to be amember because of the shortness of her stay, she had comethat day to make a contribution as an expression of her esteemfor the Temple. A week later, a long-time seasonal TBI member sharedthat he’d changed his membership status to full-time. WhenI asked why, he responded, “I just think I use the Temple toomuch to be paying seasonal dues. It’s not fair to thecongregation.” What a breath of fresh air!

Delighted to learn of his decision, I thanked him notonly for the additional funds the Temple would be receivingbut also for his especially thoughtful mindset. Why, I wonder, when it comes to the Temple are some individuals soconsiderate and generous while others treat it with such relativeinsouciance? In the Torah portion we read at the end of February, theannual half-shekel contribution incumbent on every Israeliteto make on behalf of the community’s maintenance isdiscussed. It was no ordinary coin of the realm. By virtue ofits exalted purpose, the offering was regarded as shekelhahkoesh, the holy shekel. This is enunciated further in aMidrash when Moses is shown a “sacred shekel of fire” onMt. Sinai. Additionally, this importance of this shekel is evinced

in Shabbat Shekelim, the first of four special Shabbats precedingPassover. In a free society we are all, ultimately, Jews by choice. But even among those who self-identify as Jews, we still mustchoose whether or not to support the local synagogue. I amthankful, that no matter to what degree they may draw onBeth Israel’s myriad worship, learning, social action and culturalenrichment opportunities, TBI members and others, throughtheir financial support, tangibly manifest their appreciation ofthe congregation. The challenging financial times we now confront makes thiscommitment that much more estimable. Whether this supportwill be adequately maintained in the future is uncertain. I requestyour assistance in better acquainting residents and visitors tothe area with Beth Israel and underscoring the value of BethIsrael’s presence in their midst. Marty, Emma and I extend our best wishes on the enjoymentof a purposeful and fulfilling Passover season.

Clarinetist Paul Green Presents Jewish ArtMusic -- From the Biblical Times to the Present

What did Jewish music sound like inBiblical times? To find out, come and hearClarinetist, Paul Green, who holds musicdegrees from Yale University and JuillardSchool of Music. He will offer an

overview of Jewish Art Music through the ages from Biblicaltimes to the present on Sunday, March 14, 2010, at 3:00PM.

Green will trace music dating back to the Bible wherereferences can be found to music in Genesis, Exodus,Chronicles and Psalms. Although the destruction of theSecond Temple in Jerusalem in 70 A.D. brought forth arabbinic ban on public music performance, the Jews’ passionfor music could not be stifled.

Green has had a distinguished career since his earlyteens when he showed an aptitude for the clarinet. Over theyears he has played with numerous symphonic orchestrasand performed in recitals and festivals throughout the world.

He currently is a faculty member at Florida AtlanticUniversity Boca Raton and Florida International Music inMiami, where he teaches clarinet performance and chambermusic. Following the lecture, there will be a reception whenbeverages and refreshments will be served.

The lecture, offered under the auspices of the TempleMen’s Club, is open to the community, but reservations arerequired and may be made by completing the attachedcoupon or contacting the Temple office at 383-3428. Thecost for members is $10 and for non-members $15.Doris White

LIBRARYLIBRARY PRIORITIES NOTED AT THE LIBRARYSHABBAT SERVICE

The Temple Library was honored at recent Friday nightservices. I had the privilege of discussing the updated role ofthe library. The enthusiastic reception encouraged me to sharethose thoughts more widely via this column. I would like toshare some of the remarks I made during the service:

“I enjoy books, and I enjoy people. I thank ouroutstanding Staff: Gabrielle Miller, Hermine Silver, and LibbyAdelman. Other volunteers who can be called upon as neededinclude Gloria Bakal, Beverly Peterman, Marsha Ross, GloriaSabin, Mary Ann Simon, and Cyvia Snyder. We welcomeothers to join us.

I appreciate the library foundation that former librarian,Miriam Miller, established.

I want this library to be more than a place where booksare shelved. I want the library to be a welcoming place forstudy, for meetings, for respite from the stresses of the world. Our books are carefully chosen to be a source of knowledge, comfort, and escape to the world of imagination.

I want to live our Mission Statement: ‘To stimulatesupport, and enhance Jewish life and learning through theacquisition, organization, preservation, and presentation oflibrary material appropriate to the needs of the Rabbi and all ofthe members of Temple Beth Israel. The library will serve as abasic Judaic reference source and provide current non-fictionand fiction of Jewish content for Temple members.’

Our library is always open. Just come in and turn onthe lights. If you are a member, take out a book and put asigned card in the box on my desk. At the Oneg, take a fewextra steps, and come into the library for another kind ofnourishment: food for thought, to stimulate the imagination, totap into the treasures of Jewish knowledge and traditions, andto take you to far off places you have never been.

This is your library. Staff is there on Monday morningsand before and after Friday night services. If you want to contactme, leave a note on my desk, or ask the office to put a noteinto my mailbox.

A 19th Century scholar, Sir John Lubbock, said it verywell: ‘The library is more precious than all riches. Nothing thatcan be wished for is worthy to be compared with it. The zealousfollower of truth, of happiness, of wisdom, of science, or faith, must of necessity be a lover of books.’

Thank you for the opportunity to be part of a veryexciting aspect of Temple life. After all, we are “People of theBook.”Marjorie Sandy, Libriarian

Please Patronise Our Directory AdvertisersLARGEST ATTENDANCE EVERAT BETH ISRAEL In January, the 92nd St Ysatellite broadcast featuring Justice Ruth Ginsburg drew thelargest number of people to the Temple in the congregation’shistory. Fortunately, the Temple’s new projector and sanctuarylarge screen enabled the ability to accommodate such a largeturnout. Thanks to Rabbi Katz for suggesting the idea of obtainingsanctuary large screen capacity and to Richard Olin’s extensivelabors in making it become a reality. Through Richard’s efforts, the Temple is now able to broadcast live streaming video fromthe Internet as well as receive satellite transmission. We aregrateful to the Saperstein Education Fund for providing theresources to cover the expense of this new technology. Richard is also responsible for the engaging audio-visualpresentations about the Temple that are shown just prior tothe 92nd St. Y broadcasts. Additionally, at the suggestion ofRabbi Katz, he has made possible the playing of music in thesanctuary before worship services and at other times.

I LOVE TEMPLE BETH ISRAELThe history of Valentine’s Day — and

its patron saint — is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has longbeen a month of romance. St. Valentine’sDay, as we know it today, contains vestiges

of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition.I hope you will forgive me for borrowing this symbol

for my article. Even though Valentine’s Day has come andgone, I saw in it the possible broken heart of our EndowmentFund. If it is necessary to invade its principal each year inorder to provide an annual gift for the Temple’s budget, itsheart, as symbolized by the fund’s principal, will certainly bebroken.

I know that we all love our Temple. Our Band-Aidsare the Bequests, Gifts and Gift Annuities we can provide tomake sure the Endowment Fund continues to have a healthyheart. Norman Reiter, Chair of the Endowment Fund is eagerto share with you how you can show your love for TBI. Pleasecall him at 941-504-3770.Suzanne Lutkoff
