Beth Israel- The West Temple BULLETIN President's Message As I sit down to write my column on this chilly afternoon, it is our son Matt's 12th birthday. I find myself very often reminiscing about the years that have led us to this day. It doesn't seem possible that one year from now Matt will be celebrating his Bar Mitzvah and seventeen months later our daughter, Shaina, will become a Bat Mitzvah. I have seen so much mental and physical growth within these past several years. As far back as my reminiscing takes me, I've always have a distinct feeling when observing the sparlcle in their eyes. The pride in their Jewish heritage is what shines through. Even when they were young, they were always quick to convey to others who they were. I feel that we instilled in them the basis for that pride but it was most certainly perpetuated in their religious school training. To this day they still may grouse about coming to Hebrew or religious school, but I know that's not exclusive to our family. Once they're at Temple, though, they feel at home, and that sparlcle brightly emanates from within their souls. Credit must be given to their teachers and to our temple family for their dedicated "care and feeding' of our most precious cargo. May our children's pride in their Judaism continue to grow and flourish through- out all the days of their lives.

FROM THE RABBI'S DESK

PURIM At sundown on March 11 (14 Adar), the festival of Purirri begins. It occurs very early in the spring, when the first hints of the coming green are beginning to appear. After the drab gray of winter begins to depan, the world takes on the firs playful signs of life renewed. And with that release from the gloom and gray of Cleveland's winter (and an easy winter it was), people welcome the new growth with an infectious giddiness. As Rabbi Arthur Waskow put it, "The tyrant winter is not quite overthrown, but he is smelling musty."

Purim is a time of /for hilarious silliness. It is a time for noise making and merriment, a loony day with the moon shines full on the various parodies and satires of the serious intensity of the past winter. The laughter of this festival, though, is not all nice; there is a certain anger and vengefulness to the celebration of the evil tyrant's overthrow. This is not exactly a civilized holiday. Possibly that is the reason that God is never referred to in the book of Esther.

The fun begins at 6:30 p.m., March 11, with preliminary face painting and costume making. At 7 p.m. Purim festivities will get rolling with a pious reru1ition of "Who's Leading the Shema" by Enid Lader and myself, followed by the Reading of the Megillah (in all of its splendid glory) accompanied by great noise and merriment. A (trumpets sounding, shofar blasts, etc.) parade of costumes, (drum roll) Beth Israel Temple Youth Group (known unofficially as BLITZy) Purim Shpiel, and a (hushed silence) special Mystery Purim Silliness.

Come one, come all, with greggers and good spirits, for an evening of merriment and goofiness. Members of all ages, please come and enjoy the festivities.

RITUAL COMMITTEE REPORT "God may be of no concern to man, but man is of much concern to God. The only way to discover this is the ultimate way, the way of worship. For worship is a way of living. a way of seeing the world in the light of God." (Heschel, A.J., Man's Questfor God)

Services for Shabbat are Friday, 8 p.m., Saturday at 10:45 a.m. with Torah Study at 9:30 a.m. The Congregational Retreat will be held March 21-22. This month Shared Shabbat will be celebrated on March 27 preceded by dinner at 6:15 p.m.

Please see page 6 for the complete Service and Participation Schedule for March.

Thank you Since I was not called upon to read my Ritual Report at the semi-annual meeting in January, and since I included many people to thank, I will do so now. Sincere thanks to my fellow Ritual members: Gerson Carr, Kimberly Carr, Scott Machol, Karen Roub, Ruth Schochet. Lewis Bodee, and Raymond Feliciano, who is also secretary of the committee. These great people devote their time and love to the religious needs of our temple. Thank you Gerson for being our ritual resource person. Thank you Martha Bruckman for your weekly phone calls to Shabbat participants, Nancy Eilberg for supplying our kitchen, Saragene Davis for buying the grape juice, Jane Walsh for donating challah for Friday night Shabbat Oneg, Ruth Schochet for baking challah for Saturday moming service, and Karen Rouh and Ruth Schochet for setting up for Oneg on Saturday morning. Thanks also to Enid Lader, Lenore Singer, and Madonna Parente for their help in the office, and to Rabbi Walsh for his dedication, inspiration and guidance.

COMING IN APRILBOOK DISCUSSION Plan to join the Beth Israel book discussion group on Sunday, April 26 at 7 p.m. to discuss the thought provoking book by Ursula Hegi, Tearing the Si-lence: Being German in America. .

The bestselling author of Stones from the River breaks the silence which has haunted the lives of postwar Gennan immigrants to tell the one story of the Holocaust readers have not been privy to-the legacy of shame and grief that shadows a people that can neither escape nor embrace its national heritage.

Ursula Hegi uses the art of the interview to see deeply into the personal histories of fifteen women and men as they confront at last the terrible and pervasive silence that made any mention of the Holocaust taboo in their homes and schools while they were growing up. For many of them this is the first time they've spoken of these memories and feelings. They share their pain, their guilt, their anger, and their compassion as they take us into the world of their parents and try to sort out the impact of the war on their own lives.

A skillful interviewer, the author focuses on understanding the character and story of the individuals in all their complexity. While some genuinely attempt to understand their cultural heritage and feel a deep responsibility to be aware of the Holocaust and pass that awareness on to future generations, others have stayed within the familiar silence that manifests itself in denial, evasion, justification, and an inability to mourn - not all that different from the response of their parents' generation.

Tearing the Silence contributes to a more complex picture of a time period we are still struggling to understand. It is a powerful and provocative account of post-Holocaust German immigrants in America, an important document of what it is like to grow up within the numbing silence of postwar Germany, a moving story of what it means to live between two cultures.

Please read the book, then plan to join the discussion. The location of the meeting will be announced in the next issue of the Bulletin.
