In this message, please permit me to share:

As you may know, Jim and I were in Lyon, France on Election Day. With the 6 hour time difference, I may have known the result before America woke

up. Words can’t adequately describe what it was like for me to be away from my fam-ily, friends, clinicians and clients at Ser-viceNet, and of course from my Temple Anshe Amunim community. But I was certain that my disbelief and grief were shared: given CNN and the NY Times; given the posts on Facebook; given the text message from Michael. He was awake in the middle of night, and wondered about our safety in France; wondered how he could make sense of this in his life, and wondered how he could face his students at Taconic. He asked me, “How do I get ahead of hatred and bigotry when it is evidently re-warded?” I assured him of our safety; in fact just then, Lyon, France felt like the safest place on earth. And I tried my best to offer an adequate response to his fears. I suggested that he was the teacher of this generation; that he do his best to support those in their fear and grief; pose the ques-tions aloud that people are thinking; contin-ue to foster a climate of safety, tolerance and respect one moment at a time, and one day at a time. I ended my message by saying: Stay upward in your valued living. It was a long text.

I somehow got through a lovely break-fast, but wondered how the French would look at me. What do they feel about this; what will they say? Unsolicited, the agent in the tourism bureau offered her sympa-thies without even knowing my politics; the clerk in the boutique expressed fear, “This doesn’t just affect your people, this impacts the whole world.” On a cold rainy day, Jim and I hazily saw the sights, and we tried to find some words to share. (The Cote du Rhone helped!) France brought me comfort. I felt insulated from my own country; but sick to admit feeling that way.

Like many, I thought my life as I knew it would forever change. Flooded with feel-

ing, I wondered what the future will hold for me as a woman, as a Jew. What it will hold for my children, family and friends; my community; my religion, my temple; my clinicians and clients, those who are in need, and those who are disenfranchised? What will it hold in the face of social jus-tice, health care, gender equality, religious freedom? When will overt and palpable bigotry, hatred and violence come to pass? I wanted to join Rabbi Josh and Michael and this congregation in prayer and reflec-tion. I wanted to sing the late Leonard Co-hen’s Hallelujah. Before I even knew that this was the reality on the Veteran’s Day Shabbat at TAA, this verse kept rolling over and over and over in my head; and it grounded me as I made my way back to the USA through Montreal and then to Hart-ford and then onto home:

“I did my best, it wasn’t muchI couldn’t feel, so I tried to touchI’ve told the truth, I didn’t come to fool youAnd even though it all went wrongI’ll stand before the Lord of SongWith nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah”

With this verse in mind, let us strive for all the ways that we as citizens have been invoked to find any way at all to make a difference in our community, in our coun-try, and in our small world. Let us vow in this new secular year, as Rabbi Josh sug-gested in his D’var at the last board meet-ing: As Jews, let us find wholeness and stand by our highest ideals. And I add: WE ALL must do everything we can to keep our temple and congregation whole. It is our sacred place – to be, to foster, to do, to share and reflect. In ALL that WE ‘touch,’ we WILL reap.

As we celebrate the beginning of our secular New Year, I wish you and your families a time of peace; a time to find the truths that speak to you; a time to contin-ue to share in the blessings of our temple home and community.

I thank you for this opportunity to share my thoughts with you~Debora Cole-Duffy, President

As We Move Forward

Temple Anshe Amunim ~ January, 2017 ~ 3

Men’s ClubThe Temple Anshe Amunim Men’s Club will be meeting at its regular time and date, January 15th at 11:00 a.m. This activity is open to men and wom-en and members of the Temple are invited to bring friends. The discussion this month will be “Feel, Act, Be 10 years younger. No doctors, no drugs, no exer-cise – just you and your brain.”

Planned Giving Opportunities

Sandi Rubin, Chair of our Development Commit-tee, is happy to announce that, in order to increase income with the goal to reduce withdrawals from our sustaining Endowment Funds, the Development Committee is forming an overarching congregation-al Society of Giving. In addition to the ways that we can raise funds – such as our tax-deductible cash do-nations to particular funds, often to memorialize and honor loved ones, and particular fundraising events – over the course of the year, the Development Committee will provide information to our congre-gation, so that we may consider several other ‘non-cash’ and tax deductible methods to sustain our gifts to Temple. For example: Roll Over Your IRA (see the flyer in this Bulletin); Securities Contributions (avoid capital gains taxes!); Life Insurance Poli-cies; Matching Gifts; Bequests; Trusts, and more! Of course, for these types of gifts, please contact a finance or tax attorney for assistance. If you should require immediate information about planned giv-ing opportunities, please contact any member of the Management Team.

As this bulletin hopefully arrives to you prior to December 31, as a kind reminder, please consider making your 2016 tax-deductible contribution to Temple!

~ The Management Team

Securing your dollars and checks after hours!

We so very much appre-ciate when you drop off donations and pay your bills after temple hours. In order to safeguard your money and the intent of your payment or dona-tion, please do not leave cash or checks or any form of payment on staff desks or in the Rabbi’s study. We have a new donation box near the temple of-fice. If you wish to make a donation or payment after temple hours, kindly place it in an envelope, with your name and contact in-formation and a donation form or note of intention (for example, dues pay-ment; or donation in Memory/Honor of a loved one etc.)

I thank you for your cooperation with this request. With the use of the donation box after hours, we can secure your offer-ings and intended contributions to temple! If you should have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me or any member of the Management Team.

Men’s Club Movie MinyanJanuary 8 – 4 PM - “My Italian Secret”Would you risk your life to save a stranger and never talk about it? MY ITALIAN SECRET tells the story of sports idol Gino Bartali and other courageous Italians who carried out inge-nious schemes to rescue Jews, partisans and refugees from Nazi-occupied Italy. Gino Bartali is a sports legend; but his most daring triumph came when he risked his life over and over to save Jews threatened by Nazi extermination. The story of Bartali and the secret network he worked with stands in for the stories of thousands of Italians who risked their lives to save others from capture and death. As an entire continent was engulfed in a genocide which took the lives of most Jews in Nazi occupied Europe (nearly 6 million people), more than 80 percent of Italy’s Jews survived. Bartali, like most of the rescuers, never sought recognition or reward. Few of those he helped knew his name or what role he played in their rescue.

CondolencesThe Temple Anshe Amunim community extends its condolences to Dr. Henry Tulgan and family on the passing of his beloved wife, Norma Propp Tulgan.

OVER THE TOP!!We have met our $10,000 Supplemental Dues MATCH!

It is my great delight to announce that with more than 50 congregational donors and with the last two generous con-tributions made by Women of Reform Judaism and Mar-tin and Laurie Schwartz, our congregation has exceeded the Supplemental Dues Match! As you know, late in the summer, an anonymous congregational family pledged $10,000 if our congregation raised this amount or more. Indeed, with your gifts and the last two great donations, we have added over $20,000 to our temple coffers! WE DID IT!!

On behalf of Temple leadership, I wholeheartedly thank this congregational family for generously offering the Match, and ALL in our congregation who made great and heartfelt gifts (sometimes more than one) to meet the Match. I consider this to be a Mitzvah of effort within our own walls, a spirit that will sustain and enhance our blessings at temple. Do know, that with our earnest pas-sion to meet this Match, our anonymous family considers another match for the next 2017/2018 fiscal year! Thank you! With this generosity in mind, I kindly ask that we continue our supplemental dues offerings. Even with the additional and much appreciated income from this match, the ongoing donations will be critical to offset our shortfall in total dues payments.

Again, with my gratitude to one and ALL!

8 ~ Temple Anshe Amunim ~ January, 2017

On Monday, November 14th, our team of Temple members and friends cooked and served a free meal to 45 people at the First Baptist Church in Pittsfield. Our thanks to TAA for providing the funds needed to purchase the food for the meal as well as donations from Guido’s Fresh Marketplace, Panera Bread, Bartlett’s Orchard, and Crescent Creamery. The volun-teers were Marlene Chautin, Joel Colker, Sue Colker, Laura Feakes, Pailey Feakes, Richard Kaley, Rita Kaplan, Cookie Lamet, Janie Pellish, Larry Pellish, Helen Radin, Nelson Ross, Bea Selig, Ellen Whitmer, and Lanny Zuckerman.

On Monday, November 21st, the Temple was one of 18 faith-based organizations that co-sponsored the Thanksgiving Angels event at the South Con-gregational Church. Fourteen hundred families re-ceived a frozen turkey along with all the fixings for a full-course Thanksgiving dinner. Our thanks to the members of TAA who contributed 750 cans of cranberry sauce, well above our commitment of 500 cans. Laura Feakes, Pailey Feakes, Cookie Lamet, Enrico Lamet, Alba Passerini, Janie Pellish, Larry Pellish, Helen Radin, Howard Shapiro, Shirley Sha-piro, Arlene Shreefter, and Chelly Sterman from TAA were amongst the hundreds of people who volunteered for this amazing community endeavor.

From November 15th – January 15th, the Social Action Committee is sponsoring a Warm Clothing Drive and Coins for Fuel Drive. Receptacles for both drives are in the Temple lobby. Thank you for your continued generosity.

TAA Book ClubThe next meeting of the TAA Book Club will be on January 19, 2017 at 11:45 AM. We will be discussing Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg by Irin Carmon and Shana Knizhnik.

The book was written by an award-winning feminist journalist and is more than just a love letter. It draws on intimate access to Ginsburg’s family members, close friends, colleagues, and clerks, as well an interview with the Justice herself. An original hybrid of reported narrative, annotated dissents, rare archival photos and documents, and illustra-tions, the book tells a never-before-told sto-ry of an unusual and transformative woman who transcends generational divides. As the country struggles with the unfinished business of gender equality and civil rights, Ginsburg stands as a testament to how far we can come with a little chutzpah. A timely book, as the Supreme Court itself and Justice Ginsburg were significant issues in the recent presiden-tial election.

Dear Rabbi Josh and Esther,

I want to thank you all for everything that you did to help me have the best summer of a lifetime. Your generous support, encouragement and recommendations, as well as Temple Anshe Amunim’s gift certificate to Israel from my Bat Mitzvah, made it possible for me to be able to visit Israel.

I would like to share with you my experience and all that I learned about Jewish history. My report was submitted to the Jewish Federation, which helped fund the trip, and they plan to publish it in the Jewish Voice in December. In addition, I submitted an early draft to the Harold Grin-spoon Foundation, which also provided financial support. My report can also be found on the TAA website.

A week after I came home from Israel, I was able to visit Eisner Camp for the day to talk about my trip with Olim campers who will have the same opportunity to travel to Israel next summer. I was able to give advice and hopefully persuade campers to go to Israel with NFTY. I am always available to speak to the Temple congregation and Reli-gious School Students about my experience if you would like.

I’m very grateful to have your help and support and thank you again for all that you have done and for helping me have the best summer of my life.

Gratefully,Pailey Feakes

Berkshire Bounty Needs Volunteer DriversTemple Anshe Amunim is a long-standing supporter of this community effort, and we are currently in need of drivers. Volunteers go to various food stores (e.g., Bartlett’s, Guido’s, Panera, Crescent Creamery), pick up their food donations, and deliver it to organizations that feed the hungry. The commitment is approximately once every 6 weeks for about 2 ½ hours, and requires some lifting and stairs. For more information, contact Sue or Joel Colker at (413) 443-5770 or [email protected].

Easy way to help TAANancy Shulman, Owner and Broker of Bloomberg Realty, Inc. and a TAA member, will contribute 3% of her commission from the purchase or sale of any property of a member of the community or a referral from a member. The money will be applied to the fund of your choice. Nancy, a native of Pittsfield, has been a licensed broker since 1988 and practicing residential and commercial real estate for 23 years.
