The Blessings of Annually Meeting

In a congregation such as TAA, the seasons dictate the rhythms of our communi-ty. Now, as we are embraced by the summer, many of our friends and congregants have returned from their seasonal lodgings. Our home in the Berkshires is once again full!

For me, the gateway to this season is our Annual Meeting. This gathering is a time for us to take stock of all that we’ve experienced in the past year. As we review our programs and worship opportunities, it’s also an occasion to plan for new initia-tives. Most importantly, it’s a time to feel – and to express – thanks for the many people who have offered their unique gifts to our temple family.

Andy Hochberg, our newest Member of the Year, has been an exemplar of ser-vice for many years. Andy has continually served in just about every aspect of temple life. It was wonderful to see him appreciated so fully at the Annual Meet-ing; this is not the first time that he was accorded this honor. I know that Andy and we will continue to grow together from strength to strength!

With Deb Cole-Duffy’s leadership, the members of our Management Team and Board have also invested their time and talents in our temple. Many of our com-mittees and clubs are expanding their focus to offer both one-time and reoccurring events. As a final element, our superb team of staff forms a dynamic and talented group with whom I partner on a daily basis. I feel that it would be difficult to find a warmer core of people to serve our congregation.

While I greatly appreciate the contributions of all our committees to temple life, I’d like to reflect on the efforts of our Caring Committee. This year, we have lost some beloved people from our temple family. Many of our members have also struggled with a variety of challenging issues. As I’ve accompanied these individu-als and their families, I have relied on the Caring Committee’s partnership. They have offered kind words, tasty meals and comfort to our members. This committee has swiftly become integral to our mission to care for all of our temple family – I offer them my deepest appreciation for this very holy work.

Looking ahead, I’m excited about several upcoming experiences. This month, we will hold two b’nai mitzvah celebrations (7/1 at 10:00 AM and 7/8 at 5:00 PM). Esther and our students have made these services memorable and beautiful; you are warmly invited to join in these congregational simchot!

In the middle of the month, we will return to Tanglewood for our annual Kabba-lat Shabbat service (7/14). Details about the event can be found in this bulletin – I hope to see you on the Lawn! Also in July, Tamara Wolfson (our cantorial intern) will return to us from July 28-29. Although I will be on vacation for the last two weeks of the month, I know that Tamara’s characteristic energy and insight will be a blessing to all who join her for services.

For now, I offer my warmest blessings for a healthful, peaceful and delightful summer to all the members of our temple family!

I will honor our many accomplishments by acknowledging the efforts of many. As I kvell, I hope I have included all, whose presence should be counted and lauded. If not, please notify me at once so that I may amend my Report.

I kindly ask that you read the entirety of the Annual Report. Religious Education Director, Esther Benari-Altmann - for ALL your talents, skill, and care of our Education Program and the combined TAA/KI (Chai) education program; and for ALL that you do to masterfully guide and instruct our students of all ages!

And, our dear Rabbi Josh Breindel - for your great many talents in the ways you magnificently lead us in worship, oversee life cycle events, guide our programs, tend to our congregation and temple home, and represent us so beautifully in the community. And as always, thank you for your special pastoral care, most especially this year, as we have been a congregation burdened by the shared loss of so many dear ones from our temple family.

As you can see, it takes our entire community to sustain the life of our congregation.

And, now, to several more of our successes; with your financial contributions - we have also realized so very much:•The soon to be completion of our L’Dor, V’dor

Accessibility Project, thanks to the oversight of Co-Chairs, Andy Hochberg and Rob Proskin and the Accessibility Committee, and the contributions from our kind and generous donors (There is always time to make your contribution!) to include 3 magnificent donations from the Feigenbaum Foundation; the beautiful woven accessibility commemorative fixture, which adorns our temple foyer created and donated by Wendy Rabinowitz; the tremendous gift from Joe and Mary Jane Handler, which has financed ALL the chairs (and a few more too) for our Chapel/Library; to Rob

President’s Report

Temple Anshe Amunim ~ July, 2017 ~ 5

and Dan Proskin for ALL their personal and business (BBE) contributions of their service and time and a donation of 10 more chairs;

•THE ANONYMOUS 10 K SUPPLEMENTAL DUES MATCH lovingly made and realized; and from the same anonymous donor family, this YEAR’S SUPPLEMENTAL DUES MATCH IS SET AT 10K AND FOR EVERY DOLLAR BEYOND, WILL BE MATCHED UP TO 15K!

•A 20K (+) increase in dues and supplemental dues receipts; and contributions to honor and remember our dear ones to support operations; endowments; and targeted funds, such as our Cantorial Soloist.

To all in our temple community: I thank you for every contribution you have made to sustain our blessings!

But… as you know, our Needs and Challenges do persist - Just now, we still need to receive about 20K in

outstanding dues and 7K in accessibility campaign pledges - and as I repeatedly state, there is always time to make your gift. Such income will immediately assist with these expenses: $7K to complete our Accessibility Project; $10 K for our Cantorial Soloist Fund; and $10K for additional security and building needs. To address our ongoing expenses amid current endowments and income, we all realize that we need to further develop and sustain our ongoing revenue streams. And we have begun to do just that, under the excellent and capable leadership of Sandi Rubin, and members of the Development Committee. Please continue to make your cash donations; but please also consider non-cash charitable gifts. I also wholeheartedly ask your consideration to make any size testamentary gift in order to sustain our Temple for generations to come. For further information about any planned giving gift, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Sandi Rubin, Chair of Development.

There are also times when I hear understandable concerns about our human resources - concerns that sound something like, “Why is no-one doing such and such?” This is the type of question that makes my heart and likely the collective hearts of our leadership and active volunteers just sink. To support all the wonderful blessings of our temple, and all that we are doing, our needs are many; and, they are ever-growing! Even with all whom I have happily acknowledged, all who have given to the life of this congregation, our demographic picture

and personal circumstances do limit our human resources. As I have repeatedly stated, I believe we must work toward cooperative membership and leadership. Rather than be the YOU who are or aren’t doing something at temple; we must be the WE who ARE or WILL be doing! To help respond to: “Someone should be doing such and such in this congregation!....” I also recommend we try to fill such roles as:•Volunteer Coordinator•Several Door Greeters for all services, events and

programs•Co-Chair of Archives•Co-Chair of Programming, and more committee

members•Public Relations Coordinator•More members to serve on our Development

Committee•Grant locators and writers to solicit funds for

must-have security/safety needs Please reach out to me or to any member of our

Management Team if you are interested in assuming such a role or any other role to enhance the life of our congregation.

I am so very inspired by our leadership and all in our community who lovingly give of their time, talents and efforts. I am delighted by all of our resource and development efforts (financial and human) to date. It is all of us that MAKE the difference in sustaining and enhancing the life of OUR dear temple. I thank you for sharing in worship, programs, and events and in the life cycle events of our families and in this congregation. And, I thank you again for your monetary donations of any size to temple. In partnership with the MT, Trustees, Committee Chairs, Volunteers, Staff and all Leaders of this temple; and indeed with our dear Rabbi Josh, it is my honor to serve as President of Temple Anshe Amunim. With the start of my second year as President, I greatly look forward to US continuing from strength to strength!

Respectfully submitted by:Debora Cole-Duffy, President

Through the Looking Glass

As we begin another very busy summer, I believe that Lewis Carroll phrased it accurately in Alice in Wonderland. Alice said, “Why, sometimes I’ve be-lieved as many as six impossible things before break-fast.” Because of your participation and your curi-osity, we have discovered nothing is “impossible” at Temple Anshe Amunim. We offer a variety of programs and it is our hope that you, your friends, your guests and the Berkshire community will join us. Our schedule of programs is listed in our 2017 Summer Programs and Services at Temple Anshe Amunim booklet – now available at the Temple as well as on our website.

A gentle reminder about the Theater Party on July 6 at 3:00 p.m. at Shakespeare & Company in Lenox. Tickets are limited and are going fast.

Thank you, Alyce & Rachel

Men’s ClubMovieMinyanJuly 9 at 7:00 PM

The Movie Minyan film will be Nowhere in Africa. As with all the monthly films presented by the Men’s Club, it is open to all Anshe Amunim men and women and their friends.

A love story spanning two continents, NOWHERE IN AFRICA is the extraordinary true tale of a Jewish family who flees the Nazi regime in 1938 for a remote farm in Kenya. Abandoning their once-comfortable existence in Germany, Walter Redlich, his wife Jettel (Juliane Köhler) and their five-year-old daughter Regina each deal with the harsh realities of their new life in different ways.

Dr. Barbara Waldinger’s Play Analysis Series

Temple Anshe Amunim will host a four-part Play Analysis series entitled, “The Face of Evil,” on Tuesday mornings, begin-ning July 11, from 10:00-11:30 a.m. The series is open to the public.

Dr. Barbara Waldinger will lead discussion and analysis of two plays. The first two classes will focus on Paddy Chayefsky’s The Tenth Man, an American update of Ansky’s The Dybbuk, which is a classic of the Yiddish Theatre. Guest expert Rabbi Josh Breindel will share his insights regarding dybbuks-- troubled, homeless souls who enter the body of living persons. Lillian Hellman’s Watch on the Rhine will be the subject of the final two classes. The characters exhibit the naiveté of wartime Ameri-cans contrasting with the corruption of Nazi sympathizers. In demonstrating how deeply Fascism can penetrate people’s hearts and minds, Hellman’s play, winner of the New York Drama Crit-ics Award, resonates today.

Dr. Waldinger, a director and professor of Theatre, taught at Hofstra University, Marymount Manhattan College, and Queens College for twenty-five years. She received her Ph.D. from the CUNY Graduate Center in New York City, and is serving her seventeenth year as Artistic Director of HR Showcase Theatre in Hudson, which is dedicated to staged readings of the five win-ners of its annual nationwide playwriting contest. She directs for Plays in Progress, a theatre group that helps to develop the work of new playwrights, teaches for OLLI, and reviews plays for Berkshire On Stage, an online publication.Classes will meet on July 11, 18, 25, and August 1. The cost for the four-session course is $40 for members; $45 for non-mem-bers for 4 sessions or $15 per session.

The Dreyfus Affair: An Illustrated LectureAugust 2, 2017 at 11:30 a.m.

Paris, 1894. It is discovered that a French army officer has offered to sell military secrets to long-time adversary Germany. Who is the traitor? Immediately suspected is Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a career officer who speaks German, acts aloof, and is well-positioned to gather information of value to the enemy. His handwriting seems to match the incriminating document. Most tellingly, he is a Jew, an alien. His capacity for treason can be deduced from his race.

Evidence is hastily gathered, a military trial convened, the defendant convicted, and Captain Dreyfus is publically humiliated, stripped of his rank, discharged from the army, and shipped off to imprisonment on Devil’s Island for life.

End of story? Hardly. It was only just beginning. The Dreyfus Affair divided the French nation and

attracted international notice. It took twelve years for the scandal to run its course with politicians and ordinary citizens taking sides, governments falling, coups d’état and even assassinations attempted, reports falsified, documents forged, forgers committing suicide, murders suspected, and the church and military establishments under attack. There was perjury, vandalism, dueling, and bloody riots. Through it all, the specter of anti-Semitism reared its ugly head as the army strained to protect its image as the nation’s protector. The effects of the Affair extended through the twentieth and even into the twenty-first century.

On August 2, 2017, Temple Anshe Amunim will host a dramatic power-point presentation by Jesse Waldinger, who lectured last year on the Leo Frank trial. Waldinger, an attorney and playwright, resides in Canaan, New York, with his wife, director/teacher Barbara Waldinger.

The program, part of Temple Anshe Amunim’s “Lunch and Learn” series, will begin at 11:30 a.m. Guests are invited to bring their own lunch; beverages and dessert will be provided. Admission is free for Temple members and $5.00 for non-members.

Making Scenes: TAA Acting Class with Dr. Barbara WaldingerAugust 8, August 15, August 22, August 29, 2017

Temple Anshe Amunim will host a four-part scene study class on consecutive Tuesdays, beginning August 8th, at 10:00 a.m.

Students will have the opportunity to pre-pare and perform scenes and monologues from contemporary plays in a supportive at-mosphere. Working both alone and in pairs, students will be encouraged to challenge themselves to go beyond their comfort zones to bring to life characters who may be very different from themselves. Learning from each other, they will gain confidence as they tackle exercises, explore their unique talents, and share their work with others. The in-structor, a professional theatre director, will provide constructive criticism and suggestions. Both new and expe-rienced actors are welcome.

The fee for the four-session course is $40 for Temple members, $45 for non-members; or $15 for any individual session. For more information, contact the Temple Anshe Amunim office at (413) 442-5910, email [email protected] or visit www.an-sheanumim.org.

Archivist NeededJim Overmyer, one of the original members of the Rab-

bi Harold and Audrey Salzmann Archives team, is step-ping down from his position of documents archivist as of June 30. One or more individuals are being sought for this part-time work.

The Salzmann Archives contain documents about the worship services, religious school, and administrative and financial aspects of the temple dating back to the 1950s. In addition, the Archives hold nineteenth century min-utes books and ledgers from the congregation’s earliest days, including minutes of the congregation’s founding in 1869. Rhoda and Phil Kaminstein are in charge of an extensive photo collection, which includes many pictures of religious school classes and various temple social oc-casions. Again, there are some photos of the temple’s earlier days.

A large portion of the sorting and cataloging of docu-ments has been done at this point, although the Archives are continually receiving new items. Primary duties for the document archivists are to finish processing the unar-chived materials, handle new items, use the resources to assist the temple administration and committees in pre-paring for events, and help temple members and descen-dants of past members in tracking family histories. The entire Archives team also assembles periodic historical photo and memorabilia displays for the temple lobby.

Interested archivists should contact the temple admin-istration. Jim Overmyer and the Kaminsteins are avail-able to answer questions.

On Friday, August 25 at 4:30 p.m. Join us at Temple, when we will have a dedication of our “Feigenbaum Memorial Walkway” in honor of Drs. Armand Feigenbaum and Donald Feigenbaum. We will also at this time formally recognize donors for our “L’Dor V’Dor: From Generation to Renovation” capital campaign. We will host a pre-neg from 4:30-5:30 p.m. and the Erev Shabbat Service will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Temple Anshe Amunim 26 Broad Street Pittsfield, MA 01201

Rabbi Josh, Pastor Sheila Sholes-Ross (First Baptist Church) and Father Michael Bernier (Sacred Heart Church) will lead an interfaith service to honor the founding of the United States of America on Sunday, July 2nd, at 3:00 p.m. at Temple Anshe Amunim. The choirs from the three congregations will come together to provide musical inspiration.

“Over the past few years, this service has come to mean a lot to me,” said Rabbi Josh. “It’s a moment when our congregations can unite as people of faith and as Americans.”

Pastor Sheila echoed these remarks. “It’s important for our community – for each of us – to remember the blessings of liberty. This is God’s intent for us: to interact with one another based upon the Creator whom we all share!”

While Anshe and First Baptist have collaborated on this service in previous years, Sacred Heart will be joining in the experience for the first time. “This service,” Father Michael explained, “is directly in keeping with our goal to create an atmosphere of

unity in Berkshire County. We’re honored to be partners in this endeavor.”

All are warmly invited to join in this moment of interfaith collaboration and celebration. There is no charge to attend.
