Guideline to 2016 PowerPoint Presentation Format: The Engineering Powerpoint is organized into a modular system based on a grid layout. The purpose is to create a continuous visual flow of information from slide to slide. A consistent layout helps the audience anticipate where to look for information. This structure avoids randomly sized and placed content which is confusing for the audience.

Additionally, the format creates a signature for all presentations from Columbia Engineering.

Types of slides: Opening slides, section title slides, content slides. Basic units: Header bar; Footer bar; Content area (divided into half, thirds, quarters).

Global guidelines: • Font: Calibri.• Font sizes: Header: 24; Body: 20 (never less than 18 – otherwise split slide content into 2

pages); Captions and labels: 14 – 10 points• Headers align vertically and horizontally from page to page• Body type aligns left with header• Picture top bleed to slide’s top edge; bottom abuts footer box• Background can be black or white (even within one presentation)• Concise text and selective bullets free the audience to listen rather than reads• A full page, eye catching image often best communicates content, holds audience’s

attention and make message memorable.

A modular grid has consistent horizontal divisions from top to bottom in addition to vertical divisions from left to right. These modules govern the placement and cropping of pictures as well as text.

Modular grids lend themselves to the design of tabular information such as charts, forms, navigation, schedules, and of course tables of data.

Modular grids are created by positioning horizontal guidelines in relation to a baseline grid that governs the whole document. Baseline grids serve to anchor all (or nearly all) layout elements to a common rhythm.

Modules are individual units of space that are separated by regular intervals. Modules are the basic building blocks of grids. When repeated they create columns and rows.

Each module in the grid can dene a small chunk of information or adjacent modules can be combined to form elds or spatial zones each designated to hold a specic type of information.
