Patent Medicines Containing AlcoholMust Pay an Internal
Revenue Tax
NEW RULE NOW IN EFFECT-
IT WILL PROBABLY CAUSE AN INCREASE IN THE PRICE
The revenue license levied onall retail dealers who sell patent med-icines containing more than 33 per centalcohol goes into effect today Forthe past week the local revenue officehas been besieged with dealers anddruggists who have already taken outtheir licenses The special tax ofper annum was directed by the treasury department some time ago butwas delayed in going into effect to allow the druggists and other dealers todispose of their old stock But fewdealers in the country villages have secured their license It is believed thatmany of the dealers in the countrytowns will discontinue selling thebrands of medicine which come underthis tax
This tax will undoubtedly cause araise in the prices of the medicines under the ban The consumer will alsohave to pay a higher price for his med-icine which drives away all cares re-stores the appetite and purifies theblood There are about fifteen pat-ent medicines which come under the
nearly every one of themcan be secured at the local drug storesand especially at the country storesThe sales of these beverages last yearamounted to thousands of dollars inthis stateAPRIL

ODDITIES IN BROADWAY PLAYSBY FRANKLIN FYLES
I
New York birth ofa third John D Rockefeller joggles theattitudes given to the first and secondJohn D Rockefeller in two plays Inthe same week that a burlesque of
The Lion and the Mouse is introduced in The Vanderbilt Cup with-J D I represented as opposing anabandonment of bachelorhood by JD II the newspapers are giving muchpublicity to the fact that J D II isa husband and a father to the delight-of J D I But mere scraps of legalpaper like a marriage and a birth certificate shall not lessen the glee ofaudiences at seeing the oldest of theJ Ds thrown down and stamped onby a girl whom he doesnt want for adaughterinlaw The new travestysnatches him baldheaded His graywig is torn off he loses even his skullcap and on his thinskinned skullwhich slightly protects his sensitivebrain fall the missiles of merrimentJacques Krugers face and figure resemble Rockefellers to begin with theutter hairlessness is easily imitatedand the result is an image thatlike a caricature yet is a portrait Inbut little exaggeration
The Standard king goes to the Vanderbilt cup race to see that none buthis gasoline is burned in the automobiles There he encounters his son theSundayschool teacher whose piety ismade to seem profligacy for in all innocence he Is found asleep with a gaygirls head on his shoulder and anempty champagne bottle in his lapAfterward the good old John the Baptist himself is caught quite sinless butsuspectable in the midst of half a dozen dancing Salomes who seem benton kicking his head off instead of having it cut off
Thus far it has been all toosilly to hurt But of a sudden comes-a travesty of that scene in The Lionand the Mouse where the obdurateRockefeller father is defied by the IdaTarbell daughterinlawelect withElsie Jamis as a mimic of Ida and thetwo fat comedians Henry V Donnelly-and Otis Harlan throwing their weightcruelly on the Rockefeller father andson Here the wild fun becomes almost earnestly satirical and the shaftsof wit are tipped with antitrust dynamite It is odd to see a musical farcego beyond the shooting of folly asit flies and fire a broadside at a serious problem
There is millionarism in the newdrama of Margaret Pryor and highfinanciering too A Rockefeller and aMorgan or a Harriman and a Rogers-or a Belmont and a Ryan get at eachother in a fight for a railway I havebeen extra wily to avoid designatingany one of these six as a prototype ofthe Wall street operator who in theplay hires a wire tapper to steal hisadversarys secrets as they pass fromphone to phone over a private lineThe thieving is done in a room underneath the roof across which the specialwire is strung The tapping plant hascolored electric bulbs to signal the approach of foes and there is a buttonto touch which will give an intrudera stroke of lightning before he reachesthe door The

mechanism operated up to the poIhtwhere the plotting highlow financiers-own daughter has the button pushedfor her by a blunder and is broughtin limp as though dead from electrpcution The act might end with that fora climax But there is more to comeFor particulars see next paragraphWhy have the theatrical thrillweights been so slow to put an electrical torture chamber into aHow can they have been so dullwitted in all their Inventions of miserymaking machinery as to leave out thedynamo as a producer of anguish ButIt is on the stage at last and Ohmy a woman gasped in front of me
Good gracious a woman shiveredbehind me Hot stuff a man ex-claimed beside me and from across theaisle came the outcries of a scaredchild The boss wire tappers wifecomes in and Is accused of peachingwhich she hasnt done and so hiswhacking and choking dont make hertell things that she doesnt knowTThereupon he opens a door and flingsher out of sight She is invisible but-a moment though for the wall kindlyobliges by becoming transparent soas to reveal the first electrical torturechamber known to melodrama
A few faint flashes show the manfastening the woman flat on her backThen he touches keys here and thereat which threads of incandescence-wind around her gleaming points fizzand sputter at her head and feet ballsof dazzling light fling themselves ather body and there are volleys of ex-plosion like n with thunderbolts Those things seem to hurther very much She writhes andscreams in agony begs for mercy andat last agrees to confess to anythingthat the man wants her to The author of this play is not named In thebill But my dear Mr Edison youmay as well own up
But Edison had a collaborator whomI easily identify as Victorian Sardouis so practiced or so ingenious-
as Sardou in the hiding of lovers inwives bedrooms Who else than Sardou at this late day in matrimonialtriangle plays could give new circumstances to the old situation Mar-garet Pryor has been a bride since thismorning only Family affairs have prevented her starting en a honeymoonjourney She goes home instead andthe husband promises to stay awayfrom her Now it Is night and she prepares to go to bed all by her lone selfas usual But her lover has hiddenhimself behind a curtain He means tograb her away from wedlock Herhusband raps at the door He i determined to take Immediate possessionThe curtain falls on a faithful yet dis

Now after all Margaret Pryorisnt a play to poke fun at It is farand away better than any other I haveever seen produced originally for 15to 50 cents But for its present audiences the acts with the torture chamber should follow not precede the actwith the bridal chamber for the curtain has to be raised many times forthe woman whose husband pains herbody with electric shocks and onlyonce for the woman whose husbandanguishes her soul with an accusation-of infidelity Indeed some of the peo-ple at the matnee which I attendedregarded the brides oredicament as apractical joke Probably they had seen
like It in a farce from theFrench Yet Mrs Spooner came outat once with beaming smiles-
I want to thank you she said forthe manner in which you have re-ceived that scene During the week Irecret to say there has been lauehterwhere it didnt belong but this nftrnooh there was only a little titteringand that is a credit to your intelli-gence

I kindly matron talking to a rural Sundayschool Besides managing a stocktheater in Brooklyn a borough of NewYork yet the biggest village on earthshe is president of the Brooklynbranch of the Church and Stage society and a truly representative villager I am glad that her production-of a new play made me visit her theater Both Margaret Pryor and MrsSpooner were worth while
Next week my friends she wenton in a hearttoheart talk we shallpresent Only a Shopgirl a drama soworld famous that really I ought tohave given it to you before Both mydaughters will be in theMay Spooner as the shopgirl and CecilIn a regular Cecil Spooner soubretteknow what that means Thenext play after that will be UncleToms Cabin from the great book byMrs Harriet Beecher Stowe sister ofour illustrious and beloved fellow citizen of Brooklyn Henry Ward Beecher Edna May will be Eliza and Ivetold Cecil that she must be Topsy Ce-
cil hasnt ever blacked up and shedoesntwant to but I guess she willIf you really desire it Do you After the audience had replied with applause Mrs Spooner smiled affablyand said Now I invite all you ladiesand children to 5 oclock tea with Cecil Edna May and me here on thestage when the play is over
Abraham Lincoln walks Into theatrical view simultaneously with John DImpersonated almost aslarge as life by Benjamin Chapin andfully as ugly Although the Lincolnplay started but a Sew miles out oftown as described in this correspondence last month it surprised and puzzled Broadway as though it hadfrom the sky instead of coming in from New England I hate totalk against my own city but thetruth is that those New Yorkers whogo indiscriminately to opening per
are perplexed by an untheatric play and in cases of absolutenovelty they wait for their morning
tell them what to think Itwas so with Abraham Lincoln withits study of Lncolns characteristics-and depiction of his personality Thelack of ordinary dramatic interestbothered them They were boldenough to Jaugh at a caricature ofRockefeller but they hesitated overLincoln until his homespun humor became distinct and his rugged strengthunmistakable By the time he waved-a flag and the orchestra played TheStarSpangled Banner they stood upand cheered I doubt though if MrChapinLincolns willever take him through the south
circus hits drama Biff Downgoes drama leaving circus lusty on Itslegs New York is a pretty good showtown but when there comes a weekIn which two circuses have a hundred thousand visitors theatrical managers delay productions of new playsAbraham Lincoln was brought intoBroadway to fill a gap caused by thepostponement of a costlier and lessproblematical venture The BarnumBailey show crowds the MadisonSquare garden twice a day yet the

spaces and that means much moneydiverted from the theatres as largeproportions of the Barnum Baileyand the Hippodrome audiences pay 2apiece for seats as do folks at thetopnotch theatres The circus is fash-ionable Seveneighths of the Barnumshow is the same this year that Itwas last year and every other yearsince the threering era in circuses began What was at first an amazingaggregation has become a matter ofcourse and now we expect to see anacre of ground alive to a height ofseventy feet or so with all first ratecircus doings Time was when a sin-gle bareback rider lke James Robin-son or a lone clown like Dan Ricewas a sufficient topliner for an entirethough small tent show Now a padrider would be derided among the Barnum dozen Robinsons and Riceis multiplied in antics though not Injesting by two dozen pantomimicfools With the voice of the talkingclown has been silenced that of thepeanut and lemonade man and theonly hawkers are those who sell programmes
But the enchanting scent of a menagerie remains for the single ele-phant of the olden time has becometwenty though it would take two ofthem to make up the size of Barnumsjoy and pride the lamented JumboAnd that object of Barnums care andtriumph the museum of unnatural history has no giant like Ling Foothough there are as tall a pair as Cap-tain Bates and Anna Swan nor anydwarfs as small as Tom Thumb andMinnie Warren were when first ex-hibited although there aie two nobigger than Tom and Minnie grew tobe What is to be done to check thedegeneracy in hUman freaks Baileysideals are no doubt as lofty as Barnums were but nature is against himAnna SwanBates and Minnie Warren IThumb gave birth to babies of ordinary size But then neither of thetragic Edwins Forrest and Boothfathered any kind of an actor muchless a dramatic phenomenon Dontblame Bailey He is sorrier than wecan be that the Siamese Twins leftno joint heirs and that the best hecan show is a man with a third legdangling
The new thing to thrill beholders inthe Barnum is a somersault Inthe air by a leap rap car what wouldbe called a backyard flipflap if itwere done by a man Really yes aclear and complete revolution between the en I of an inclined track andthe level on whch the vehicle strikesOf course the car carries a girl tomake its feat interesting She looksno more than 16 with her loose hairand short frock her swet smiles andgraceful bows as she is first taken
