GeneralSMEAR BOARD

One extra technician to Hyytiälä with public application (Global SMEAR etc.) No other noteworthy aims for the Hyytiälä team during 2017 than ICOS labelling and

maintenance of continuous measurements. Campaigns FAST (Porcar) and ACTRIS flux (Järvi?) shouldn't need much technical assistance.

IT

InfrastructuresICOS ATMSMEAR II (SMR) is on the labelling phase 2.

Repeated Webex meetings with the Atmospheric Thematic Centre (3 so far)o Action points form ATCo No open action points at the moment

ICOS mobile lab visited us second time 12/2016 - 1/2017o Their report should be ready by week 11 (ICOS ATM MSA meeting in Lund, Sweden)

We hope to get the label during this yearo The date of the next MSA after Lund's meeting is not yet known

ICOS ecosystemSMEAR II (Fi-Hyy) and Siikaneva 1 (Fi-Sii) passed station labeling step 1, Fi-Hyy notes:

EC measuring height must come down from the current 33 m to reduce the fetch EC boom orientation is not optimal but not easy to change due to the mast structure

Step 2 actions

set up mandatory step 2 measurements at Fi-Hyy and Fi-Sii (eddy, storage, meteo, soil, backup meteo)

implementation plan for other variables (below-canopy PAR, soil chambers, wind) complete site vegetation characterization and instrument metadata (step 2 mandatory

variables) submit 2 months of NRT data to ETC with <8 days of gaps

o Test version of (at that time) ICOS-compliant Fi-Sii data processing was set up on hippuko in Helsinki in spring 2016.

o Final Fi-Hyy and Fi-Sii data flows will be set up on Timo. FI-Sii notes:

o Setup is nearly ready according to the ICOS protocols

Plans for coming summer and entire year o Värriö:

Huizhong will do again measurements in Värriö fire areas (at least two or three campaigns during the summer). In spring we will be with her, but in summer it may be that some summer worker from Värriö should go with her to the areas.

Also, as Huizhong measurements are taken this year we should take at lest CO2 chamber measurements (but all GHGs would be better) from areas (once in month) and for that summer worker is needed. It will take for summer worker two days (max 3 days if all GHGs are measured) in month to measure the gasses in Värriö fire area.

Page 4: Tekniikkapalaveri 2017 agenda - Web viewTekniikkapalaveri 2017 agenda. General. SMEAR BOARD. One extra technician to Hyytiälä with public application (Global SMEAR etc.) No other

Also I will take soil for my microcosm experiment from Värriö. For that no help from the stuff will be needed. The location of the micocosm experiment is not jet decided, but most probably the experiment will be set up in Estonia (soils from Värriö and Vihterpalu will be treated with Biochar, and will be left for a year or two).

Japanese invasion to Värriö possibly?o Hyytiälä:

Earlier the plan was that prescribed burning experiment will be postponed to 2018 and we will be in Canada this summer, but now it is not sure anymore. We (me, Jukka and Shurpali) will be in Hyytiälä on 6. February. We will meet with Antti and visit possible areas. We are searching the possibilities to combine my needs and Shurpalis needs (he has an ERANET project), and maybe we are able to use the same areas. But all this planning will happen after technical meeting.

A plan is to use the site Forestry students are going to burn for Kajar's measurement

NarasinhaSurpali's measurements

are going to happen at the 2 year old clear cut site beside the "saha road" (behind the ‘Boreal Dinner’ forest)

o Eddy systemo electricity possibly from SMEAR main systems? Janne needs to coordinate this, together

with Kuopio’s own technician Timo Oksanen. o We haven't promised anything else than help with the electricity

JUKKA:

In addition to this, we would like to conduct GHG measurements with chambers at the biochar experiment in Hyytiälä on a monthly basis. It would make a good MSc thesis, but I do not yet have a candidate for that. Do you know someone in Helsinki? summer worker?

Juurten kaivuu ja virtausten mittaus juuristosta (FRANK/Ram Oren & Sari Palmroth: Erkko professorship)

Dynamax sensors, dataloggers needed (some ancient ones may exist in Hyde?); mainly active experimentation after summer 2017. Funding for equipment is available in ERKKO foundation grant. Datalogger possibly purchased from FIRI2017 funding (JAANA: NEED TO KNOW THE TYPE AND PRICE)

o Need for technical assistance from SMEAR is not accounted for

27th July to 4th August Siikaneva and Lakkasuo Student 1.

o At each plot he will make detailed abiotic measurements of: light using hemispherical pho-tography, pH, humidity, and the location of D. rotundifolia individuals. 10 individual plants per plot will be visited four times to make measurements of size, morphology, prey capture, trap stickiness, prey availability. On the last occasion the plants will be removed for analysis in Loughborough.

Student 2o This student will undertake sUAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) surveys of the bogs,

accompanied by detailed measure-ments at the 10 plots. Measurements will include the deployment of temperature loggers, which will need to be collected the following year (by site staff if possible), a dGPS survey at a resolution of c. 10 cm, and species distributions.

MeteorologyICOS

Air pressure measurement; instructions say EC height, to be negotiated with ETC as we already have two instruments near ground level

o Additional T, RH, WS, WD in the mast at the same height (+-2 m) as EC (27-28 m)

o WS & WD not required in step 2o T & RH: mast, min distance of 1.5 m from all other structures and instruments

Meteo data logging interval <=30 so Precipitation?

Precipitation instructions missing, the protocol is not final either --> We’ll try to fulfil ICOS requirements with the existing instruments

o GPM Pluvio2 for WMO spec total precipitationo Vaisala PWS for liquid/snow precipitationo FMI for snow deptho Snow depth in the forest?

Backup meteo stationo T, RH, global radiation, precipitation with relaxed specso Independent power and data collectiono Location <1 km from the ECo No NRT data submission(?)

"Data has to be NRT"o Instructions require locating all instruments at the same place but we'll negotiate using

existing instruments at the satellite stations: 35 m tower, Kuivajärvi (radiation, T), GPM (precip, T), FMI (T, RH),…

"Yes, we can. However, ETC will verify how close are these to the ICOS meteo measurements."

Factory calibration of met and radiation instruments every two yearso Are all installations such that dismantling the sensors for calibration is easy and the

sensor leveling does not change?o Some spare sensors (including CNR4) shared with Siika1 and Kuivajärvi

RadiationICOS

PAR, diffuse PAR, global were moved to 35 m tower CNR4 at 67 m Current reflected PAR at 67 is OK but must be calibrated (or replaced with fresh sensor) Below-canopy PAR at/near the fisheye locations, not mandatory in step 2 but would be good to

have operational this year to show their superiority over fisheye photos in LAI determination Radiation data logging interval <=20 s Factory calibration of met and radiation instruments every two years

o CNR4 is newo Hopefully on-site calibration for below-canopy PAR (15 x XXX€ = expensive)

"OK for the ETC" Documenting the fields of view of all radiation sensors with fisheye photos

Trace gases

Tower 35m Ecophysics NO-analyser in use since March; automated, daily zero check system waits to be

taken into use; scrubber chemicals + MFC exist and also (?) the controlling program by Frans oxygen generator installation on the wall if place for it O3 analyser (previous API 400; in Hyytiälä) and NO2 analyser (LGR; in Kumpula) should be

installed to complete the setup; need for a rack and for a measurement program PC controlled calibration setup should be self-constructed (more MFCs + ozone generator to be

purchased) or a complete system of zero air generator + gas mixer/diluter & ozone generator purchased; calibration gas cylinders up in the hut or down on the ground?

old Photo NO and NOx analysers need service and re-build after the Photo-use modifications; one could be used for “NOy” measurements; the other as a Smear reserve instrument

CI-ApiToF Since HeikkiJ is moving to Tarto, another person will continue, maybe Lisa Beck.

Eddy 35m tower setup (aerosol flux) operational (new) O3 eddy analyser FOS in Kumpula storage; who needs?

ICOS

Eddy33 to be moved to 27-28 m, to some extent governed by mast structures, must be negotiated with ETC as the height is below the recommended range.

o "some discussion is still needed before the green light" The boom construction must be renewed for easier maintenance and on-site calibration,

practically new system must be built.

Page 8: Tekniikkapalaveri 2017 agenda - Web viewTekniikkapalaveri 2017 agenda. General. SMEAR BOARD. One extra technician to Hyytiälä with public application (Global SMEAR etc.) No other

Ivan would like to have the EC anemometer further away from the mast than the protocol requires (1.44m)

o "some discussion is still needed before the green light" Some technical issues in 33 m data, apparent water vapour condensation, must find out where

this comes from. Sonic heating or not? Ask ETC opinion.

o "Calibration is done with and without heating wire at the factory, and if there are not differences, then the sonic heating approach is accepted. Options for us are: 1) we do our sonic heating system and we send it to the factory; 2) Meelis Molder (from Lund) has made the sonic heating (using some wire, I guess), and they have sent the sonic already to the factory (20.02.2017). If their system is ok, then we can implement without additional calibration."

o However, the 33m sonic need calibration, so we need to send it anyway to the factory. Data collection will be Siika1 style, separate raw data files from anemometer and gas analyzers

will be combined and converted to ICOS format outside the primary data logging.o "The ETC would like to test the software. Data could be also sent as two separate files."

All maintenance operations must be promptly (1 day or so) reported to ETC.o ELOG helps but the diary entries need to be copied from there to ETC web interface.

Scripted solution possible if ETC provides API and we keep discipline in using the diary. Li-Cor factory calibration is done for the whole setup, not just sensor head. Calibration issues, most of these must be sorted out with ETC:

o What is "first installation"? "The field installation date is relevant"

o Calibration is done with Li-Cor software, not possible to use one computer for multiple IRGAs

"some more details on this? ETC wants to know on that" (Pekka?)o Automated calibration lines in the tower would leave just cleaning the optical cell to be

performed up in the tower. This requires modification of Licor sample tube (T branch). "A scheme and details of the setup should be sent to ETC. Eventually some tests

are needed."o Must every calibration involve adjustment of IRGA, not just check?

"Check the Instructions."o Factory calibration of sonic??? with heating cable???

See aboveo New standard gases are needed, AGA bottles have too much uncertainty.

"Probably this will be change to 1% in the INSTRUCTIONS"

ICOS storage flux

Approximately logarithmic sampling profile of CO2, H2O, T at ~1...27 m in the mast Two lowest levels horizontally branching Protocol scheme B (sequential sampling) or C (simultaneous sampling from all heights)?

o Scheme C is simple but the data cannot be fixed if something goes wrongo Ivan has discussed this shortly with ETC, and probably all ICOS sites will go for scheme B.

So, this is now decided, we go also for scheme B.

Automatic shoot and stem (and soil) chamber measurement system for CH4 (and CO) for SMEAR II.

o requires upgraded shoot chambers with temperature and CO2 control, utilizing old shoot chambers or modifying the newly build chambers.

requires new chambers; the old ones do not meet the requirements of closed chamber measurement + T/CO2 control

o requires installation of the new stem chambers (Topi’s chambers – already in our hands)o requires an available slow-response CH4 laser, e.g. Picarro G1301: we have one already

(will be borrowed into Lukas Siebicke’s campaign for true eddy accumulation flux measurements of CH4 (2017-2018)

o control unit for the chamber system (automatic operation, data collection etc)o In terms of workload and complexity, this means building a system comparable to the

current chamber system.o Benefits the plans of building kevytkyvettisysteemi, which will be clearly lighter and less

complicated than the one needed by Mari but still shares certain same modules. o Planned to be functional during 2018

o needed for a better access to pine and birch at upland soil to measure CH4 fluxes from tree canopies and shoots from several trees.

o Needed also for manual measurements to complement automatic systemso needed also for the forest thinning experiment

It is very important to underline the difference of building the tower and it’s instrumentation in terms of workload

Lukas Siebicke, True Eddy Accumulation measurement campaign 2017-2018o Lukas is a site PI of ICOS Hainich forest siteo He has developed a flux measurement system for trace gases measuring eg. CH4 fluxes

with better precision than EC. He would be interested in bringing his setup to Hyytiälä to be compared to EC and chamber measurements of CH4 (soil, trees).

o The system works independently and requires internet access (to operate online)o He brings a student to maintain the system after installation (late June 2017)o The setup utilizes our Picarro G1301, and should be installed to REA tower close to our

EC CH4 system. Possible?o Timo is involved in the planning and knows about this, and supports the campaigno Lukas is prepared to apply TNA funding, and other funding for the projecto Info from Lukas:

Details on TEA system for installation at Smear II: One Zarges-type aluminium box with TEA air samples handling (ca. 0.5

x0.5 x 1 m), One Zarges-type aluminium box with Picarro gas analyzer (temperature

When the isotope analyzer arrives, a few days for technical assistance needed, after that rather independent.

TreeStem measurement maintenance Teemu Hölttä, Yann Salmon & Teemu Paljakka overall: more trees should be measured (same request for Albert, Mari et al as well); plan needed for this

Stem temperatures (system under construction by Heikki)

Should be installed asap (original formulation ‘immediately’) for the trees by the new tower; contact Yann Salmon well in advance because he would like to participate.

In general, Yann will be more actively involved in the maintenance and development of stem measurements, and contacting the technicians at SMEAR II through Janne Levula

LVDTs

Teemu P. responsible to check the data. Teemu P. will check in field the sensors by the new tower before the spring. Anna and Yann will do additional checks during spring and summer to remove any grown bark

etc. The third pine at the new tower would need to have LVDT + T + sap flow if possible.

o Not in the immediate future (except T which will be installed soon)

Sap flow

Teemu P. responsible to check the data. Sap flow sensor in the birch is not working – Teemu P. will check it before spring. The higher pine sensor (in Sylvi) is showing way too big voltage – could that be checked by

Heikki?o Yes it could be checked

In future:When the Granier sensors need to be changed for new ones we plan to suggest that we would get sensors that give radial variation. This is possibly included in the awarded FIRI funding

o (JAANA COMM: what is the price?)o We will think the possibility to switch to Zweifel’s frame style.

Uusi (photo?)torni

Tarvitaan uutta tiedonkeruukapasiteettia (1-2 Nokevalia) ainakin tornin tyvelle, mahdollisesti myös ylemmä missä myös kanavat nykyisin kortilla.

o Toteutus syksystä 2017 alkaen?

Old tower

Data acquisition infra on top of the old photo tower is not planned to update after the COS measurements end in summer 2017;

o if anyone has needs then inform SMEAR technicians well in advance! Can we still keep the diameter, sap flow + T ongoing in two pines where we fixed them last

summer? One pine is also measured at REA tower. If this is possible, we will make new frames. o Janne: no problem if the system is working and doesn’t need significant maintenance

Dynamax vanhalla tornilla ei toimi, mutta Eki on tietoinen ongelmasta ja yrittää ratkoa sitä jo maaliskuun alussa.

Xylem sap of birch

Anna, Yann and Teemus in co-operation with Jan Muhr and Henrik Hartmann (Max Planck Institute, Jena). The experiment started last summer.

o Further away from SMEAR II 18 birches are measured for phloem sap (sugar concentrations and isotopic (13C, 14C) signatures) and leaf biomass (14C and 13C).

o Also stem gas exchange measurements and stem core incubations are done (Spring 2017). Six of the trees were girdled during summer 2016.

o During April-May, we will make three one-day trips to collect sap.o In May, June and August we will make one week trip each month to make a

measurement campaign.o If possible, we will ask Antti to shoot down some leaves again during the measurement

campaigns. o No need for technical assistance?

Mahlanpainemittaukset

Anturit liitetään uudella fototornilla harvoihin vapaana oleviin kanaviin.

Pihkanpainemittaukset

Fisheye photos at soil/ancillary data plotso Juho wrote work description and estimated time for completing taking the photos, the

workload is high and timing difficult (early morning, late evening, steady overcast).o "Ivan (and Timo) have tried to convince Dario et al about this, but for step2 we probably

need to use fisheye photos. Lidar data are also possible, but probably not for labeling." Biomass sampling and litterfall needed for labeling (measured data or just sampling plan?)

o Yearly ground vegetation biomass and GAI; This was done in 2015, the original idea was mainly to figure out the working hours needed etc, can we use the data for labeling?

o Measurement of trees at ancillary data plots every 3 years "We should demonstrate that at least one allometric function is based on

similar type of soil, tree, and climate like SMEARII. It was mentioned that even Lidar data can be used (but probably not for labeling). Anyway no final answer from ETC. It should be discuss again with ETC (Janne and Pasi)"

o Extensive sampling of trees around EC tower every 6 yearso Litter traps were bought, holders are already there

We have installed the litter trap holders and purchased new litter bags. However, we want to continue with the current trap model which we have found to be very suitable to our conditions: 0.192m2 tubs with holes in the bottom covered with water permeable bag

"No final answer from ETC. It should be discuss again with ETC (Janne and Pasi)" Leaf mass area and N sampling

o Overly large and laborous sampling from treetops, at least one sampling campaign annually (late autumn 2017 if required for labeling)

Needle N content does not change significantly within year and during stand development.

No final answer from ETC. It should be discuss again with ETC (Janne and Pasi)

Phenology camera(s)o Not required in step 2o Current Monimet cameras are fine

Automated dendrometerso Not required in step 2o Band dendrometers were boughto Not a word about these in the latest ancillary data protocol!

Aerosol No huge changes Hitu cottage Twin-DMPS, CPC, Volatility-Twin-DMPS,CCNC, SHARP, MAAP, Nephelometer,

Aethalometer ... as before PSAP measurement finished, CAPS most likely finished PSMs?

o New rack for the PSMs in the new container? OCEC. Finally working after Helsinki visit. Quality control for the recent data asap.

GPM In general most of the operative tuning and maintenance shall be done

by the University radar laboratory together with FMI specialists. Data flow, including 3-4 radar systems, may need some redesign, but

this too mostly to be done by radar laboratory.' W-band cloud radar installation by the manufacturer is likely to happen

in Spetember 2017. Before this a stable platform for it is to be designedand assembled. One option would be a trailer base that would allow foreasy movement of the system if needed. The platform design and preparationneeds, obvioulsym, co-ordinated efforts by radar laboratory and Hyytiälästaff..

Surface precipitation measurements continue with the existinginstrumentation at the site by the University, FMI, and NASA.

C-band weather radar operations continue, and possibly with some moreversatile scanning strategies.

K-band cloud radar continues to operate by FMI. Tests on how close to each other the three microwave band radar system

can operate is probably organized by Dmitri Moisseev and Ewan O'Connor. Other surface meteorological measurements and University of Oulu

activity, should not cause much need for station personnel support either. Power supply for the systems is obviously included in other general

plans on this issue. In addition radar container cooling needs probablysome equipment during summer, and radome heating and ventilation systemhas to be made suitable for antenna scanning. The plan is to have
