Pushing musical buttons and boundaries! @CriticalJazz Saturday, March 30, 2013 Posted by brent black at 11:27 PM Marc Mangen Trio Neu Klang 2013 Strains of Delight and Despair is an aptly titled release as the trio move effortless from swinging modern jazz where the groove is ridden for all its work to a slightly dark if not more melancholy sound as though there were some personal angst deep inside leader Marc Mangen and his stellar trio rounded off by Johnnes Schaedlich on double bass and Jens Biehl. This most unique presentation presents 9 pieces drawn from a plethora of jazz themes composed by Marc Mangen. Perhaps the most interesting if not musically inspirational back story would be the rewrites that would occur on a regular basis before reaching the finale. Each theme has a personal content, a conceptualized ebb and flow that Mangen himself may be the only person able to fully explain this concept. Mangen may play the melody with a certain focus and harmonics intent but Mangen is open to have his work interpreted to the point that this trio is certainly a team effort in conceptualized the thematic development of a composition. As has been said before, you can not or at least should not kill a beautiful melody as this can serve as your sonic tour guide and allow the music to lead and for the rest of us to follow as it should be. on the overtly commercial ignoring the fact that as the world seems tobe getting smaller while becoming more global there are artistsoverseas that should be embraced by the American audience not tomention the plethora of platforms available for labels here to promotethe artistry you find in countries such as Japan, Italy and Germany.The Marc Mangen Trio is on par with piano trio you may find workinganywhere, the latest release Strains of Delight and Despair is easily onmy short list for best of 2013.
If good piano players not to mention trios are a dime a dozen thenMangen is worth a million. Rounding out this jazz collective we find thedynamic double bassist Johannes Schaedlich and the stylish grooves ofdrummer Jens Biehl. I use the term collective as this could easilypass with any of the musicians claiming a leadership role. It is a rareand beautiful experience when three voices can come together as onecreating an emotional ebb and flow. Lyrically centered with anaddictive use of odd time signatures that creates a dynamic tension notoften heard or appreciated in the American market.
Opening with "Circles" we find a rich yet incredibly intimatepresentation, melancholy but never morose. "Sphere" flips the groupdynamic with Schaedlich assuming more of a lead position with hisopening solo as Mangen and drummer Biehl quietly slip in before thelistener may realize it. The ability to shift dynamics on the fly with everlosing accessibility or the lyrical sense of purpose is a righteous groovethat is pulled off with flair and precision. "Seascape" captures a slightcinematic quality as do several compositions on the release but there isa deceptively subtle blues infusion smoldering just below the surface.
Strains of Delight and Despair takes the listener on a emotionaljourney of spatial wonder with a three dimensional sonic depth of fieldas vibrant and full filling as one could imagine.
Breathtakingly beautiful.
