The Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program at Santa Ana Public Library:
From Seeds to Trees: Growing the Bilingual Librarian of Tomorrow from High School Diploma through MLIS with Santa Ana Public Library and Orange County REFORMA
Between July 2010 and June 2013, SAPL and OC-Reforma will conduct a three-tiered recruitment and training program
Three Stages:Seeds to Sprouts – Teens 12-18
Sprouts to Saplings – College Age
Saplings to Young Trees – MLIS Students
Need for programCritical shortage of Spanish speaking librarians
The need for qualified and culturally sensitive bilinguallibrarians in Hispanic service areas is acute.
The number of Latino students enrolled in MLIS programs verysmall.
Libraries and students in Hispanic communities need oneanother: the library to develop effective staffing, and thestudents to find means of enhancing their future prospectsand improving conditions in their communities.
