They will learn how to tell fantastic stories with pictures, while learning about form, shading, perspective, and proportion. Each student will produce a completed comic book in this class. Grades 5-8 COMIC BOOKS, SCI-FI AND FANTASY (SC16-4) June 27-July 1, 9am-noon $160 member/$175 non-member Instructor: Andrea Thompson Develop original ideas, unique comic book characters, and tell your own stories in this comic book class for older students. Include style, mood, setting, expression, interesting perspectives, and anatomy in your work. Each student will produce a completed comic book in this class. Grades 5-9 FABRIC DESIGN AND SEWING 1 (SC16-5) June 27-July 1, 10am-4pm $225 member/$240 non-member Instructor: Erin Casey Incorporate your interest in color and design while creating art on fabric with permanent dyes. Use the fabric you design in an outfit you sew, to be modeled on the last day of class. Students will also learn to develop sewing patterns and create unique fashion and accessory designs. Projects in this level 1 class will be less complex than projects in the level 2 class, offered in August; students are welcome to take both classes. Students who took our fashion classes last summer will discover new experiences and learn new skills in this class. Sewing skills are helpful but not necessary. Families and friends are invited to come 30 minutes before the end of class on Friday to enjoy an exhibition of student work and a fashion show. Please bring a sewing machine to class, if you have one. Shading, perspective, color, texture, composition, and realism will be the focus.

NEW! STAINED GLASS (SC16-9)July 5-8, 10am-4pm$225 member/$240 non-memberInstructors: Erin Casey and Andrea ThompsonDesign and create original stained glass works of art in this new Michener program. Learn to create patterns for glass images. Cut, grind, polish, taper, and solder colored glass to create window hangings. KIDS AROUND THE WORLD: ART, MUSIC AND THEATER (SC16-13)July 18-29, 8:30am-5pm$400 member/$425 non-memberInstructors: Stephani Thomas and Linsey GriffinThis is a two-week program, which runs July 18-29.Join us for an in depth artistic exploration of children around the world. Learn about the variety of houses, landscapes, schools, toys, animals, clothing, food, hobbies, music, transportation, and more. Find out how kids around the world are like you, and how they are different. Create drawings, paintings, photography, sculpture, pottery, textile arts, and jewelry. Experience musical and theatrical forms inspired by children living on every continent. Hear stories from many different places. This class will give students a rare opportunity to see the work of National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry, most famous for his “Afghan Girl” taken in 1985. All are invited to a performance and exhibition in Michener’s event pavilion on the last day of camp.

Artists in this class will find their inspiration in nature for original works in drawing, painting, mixed media, and sculpture.

Create develop, write, and record original content for our Youth Audio Tour. Broaden your understanding of the Michener Art Museum. Go behind the scenes with Michener staff to learn about the vault, the archives, the library, gallery technology, and the exhibitions. Become a permanent part of Michener exhibitions and the visitor experience for young audiences. Earn 18 community service hours. Students who attend the morning drawing class will meet up with the Audio Team at noon on Friday. Students who attended this class in 2015 are welcome to return this summer; new artworks will be added to the existing guide.

Learn about the variety of houses, landscapes, schools, toys, animals, clothing, food, hobbies, music, transportation, and more. Find out how kids around the world are like you, and how they are different. Create drawings, paintings, photography, sculpture, pottery, textile arts, and jewelry. Experience musical and theatrical forms inspired by children living on every continent. Hear stories from many different places. This class will give students a rare opportunity to see the work of National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry, most famous for his “Afghan Girl” taken in 1985. All are invited to a performance and exhibition in Michener’s event pavilion on the last day of camp.
