Welcome to Sixes River Recreation Site The Sixes River has attracted gold miners for many years dating
back to the mid-1850s when Jake Summers first discovered gold in the area below the mouth of the South Fork of the Sixes River In 1965 the Recreation Site was established and the area was withdrawn from mining
claims Today Sixes River Recreation Site is open to recreational mining and gold prospecting including panning sluicing and suction dredging
Non-motorized equipment such as panning and sluicing Up to one cubic yard of material per year can be processed using non-motorized methods according to the following rules and regulations
Non-motorized operations are allowed year round except mining is prohibited if fish eggs are present
Non-motorized operations except panning are required to obtain the General NPDES 700-PM
permit on-site at all times during operation from Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) (503) 229-5696
Motorized equipment such as suction dredging sluicing and rocker boxes Up to 25 cubic yards of
material per year can be processed using motorized methods according to the following rules and regulations
Motorized operations are only allowed during the in-water work period established by Oregon
Department of Fish and Wildlife on the Sixes River from July 15 through September 30
Must have a General Authorization permit on-site at all times during operation from Oregon
Department of State Lands (503) 986-5200
Must have a General NPDES 700-PM permit from Oregon DEQ (503) 229-5696
Bureau of Land Management Supplementary Rules In addition to the rules set forth under the above
required permits the Bureau of Land Management Coos Bay District has established supplementary rules to
regulate recreational placer mining activities at Sixes River Recreation Site to ensure consistency with Oregon
State rules and regulations governing placer mining activities and enhance recreational opportunities and protect public resources
The following acts are prohibited Sluicing or dredging in streambed without the required permit(s) issued by the appropriate State
Agencies Operating a dredge rated over 10 horsepower or having an intake suction hose over four inches in
diameter Excavating and processing materials outside the existing wet perimeter ldquoWet perimeterrdquo as defined
in State rules is that area of the streambed which is under water or exposed as a non-vegetated gravel
bar surrounded on all sides by actively moving water at the time the mining activity occurs
Impounding of water or excavating to extend the natural wet perimeter existing at the time mining activity occurs
Removing disturbing or excavating of any soil or vegetation within the area outside of the wet
perimeter
Supplementary Information Authority for the establishment of these Supplementary Rules for the Sixes
River Recreation Site and Prohibited Acts is contained in 43 CFR Chapter II subpart 8360-3 and 83651-6 Person or persons violating or failing to comply with these rules may be subject to penalties provided for in 43
CFR 83600-7 and 43 CFR 92621 which include a fine not to exceed $100000 andor imprisonment not to exceed 12 months
