Technology Where it Really Counts: Shaping Our Energy Future
Jackie Mutschler Vice President, Exploration and Production Technology Group
The challenges posed by energy are significant, yet solvable.
BP experts use interactive virtual environments to analyze performance in the Valhall field, Norway
We successfully apply our skills to the many challenges we face.
BP experts developed a new technique, which has become standard for BP and industry for mitigating drilling risk in complex subsalt environments.

Four key drivers which will play an important role in shaping the future of energy…
 Energy demand
 Energy supply
 Energy security
 Environmental impact
World oil demand will grow by 32% by 2020 and world gas demand by 48%.
Technology is already improving oil and gas recovery and is instrumental to our work in previously inaccessible areas.

We still have decades worth of fossil fuels in the ground.

Accessing resources will become increasingly challenging.
The Thunder Horse platform will be the oil and gas production hub for one of the largest hydrocarbon discoveries to date in the Deepwater Gulf of Mexico.
There are around 250 years of coal reserves at current production rates.

Resources are plentiful, but they are concentratedin a limited number of areas.

Technology will have its greatest impact in helping countries improve their own energy security.
Tata BP Solar’s manufacturing facilities in Bangalore are the largest of their kind for Solar Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal Products and Systems in India.
Like others in the industry we have sought to be part of the solution. We’ve focused on three areas:
 Sustainable operations
 Sustainable products
 Sustainable solutions
BP Ultimate has been specially formulated to reduce emissions.
Sustainable operations
A model of a reservoir at In Salah, which will eventually store 17 million tonnes of CO2 .
Sustainable products
BP Ultimate fuel increases performance, lowers emissions, enhances cleaning and reduces engine friction.
Sustainable solutions
BP is a partner in the California Fuel Cell Partnership, and operates hydrogen fuelling stations in Northern and Southern California.
Its going to take pioneering thinkers inmany different fields of science and engineering.
The lubricant technology centre in Wadala, India.
Delivering technology where it really counts.
Technology developments in the upstream and downstream.
Our industry is measured by outputs, not inputs.
We focus on the areas of technology that will make the biggest difference to our customers and their communities.
Children playing around a Solar array. Philippines.
We combine strong technical expertise with the best tools our suppliers offer and a corporate willingness to test at scale.
Our computing centre in Houston - one of the most powerful in the world.
Our new seismic imaging techniques have allowed us to explore and make discoveries beneath salt formations.
BP's new seismic technology helps wells to reach oil-bearing reservoir zones below salt canopies.
We are gathering seismic data in new ways.
The wide azimuth towed streamer (WATS) technique enabled a step change improvement in image quality by increasing seismic subsurface illumination below complex salt.
Using technology to continually extend the drilling envelope.
We are drilling deeper, further and in more challenging environments.
Extending the drilling envelope results from the application of BP's 700 drilling engineers to a common problem.
Exploratory drilling rig in desert close to Krechba, Algeria.
BP is ranked as one of the industry’s top drilling performers.
Operators at work on a drilling rig in Angola - oil production here is set to reach around 2 million barrels a day within ten years.
Using technology to transform the way we manage our oil and gas fields.
BP experts use interactive virtual environments to analyze performance in the Valhall field, Norway.
Thinking beyond conventional solutions has made fieldofthefuturetm a reality.
Life-of-Field Seismic system offers the potential to increase recovery from Valhall field by 60 million barrels.
BP’s pioneering life-of-field seismic (LoFS) system enables reservoir performance to be monitored directly, “on demand”, using a permanently-installed array of sensors on the seabed.
Technology transforms the way we link BP offices with offshore facilities through Advanced Collaborative Environments (ACEs).

We are developing alternative sources of energy that diversify/broaden supply while reducing environmental impact.
BP Alternative Energy
End of last year, we launched a new business called BP Alternative Energy, with plans to invest around $8 billion over 10 years in generating and marketing power from solar, wind, hydrogen and gas.
BP power generation
Gas-fired power station, Vietnam.
Our objective? Make the costs of solar energy competitive with utility power worldwide.
Tata BP Solar's manufacturing plant produces solar cells, 80 different styles of modules and exports to BP Solar operations around the world.
We also plan to increase our wind power capability.
Last month, we purchased Greenlight Energy Inc, a US-based developer of wind power generation projects.
The plan is for North Sea gas to be reformed into hydrogen and CO2, with the CO2 being piped underground to help prolong the life of a mature oil field.
We will build the world’s first two commercial-scale power stations which generate electricity from hydrogen while produced carbon dioxide is captured and stored underground.
BP already uses carbon sequestration to capture and store around one million tonnes of CO2 each year at the In Salah gas production site in Algeria.
Underground storage of CO2 is already a reality at In Salah.
BP/GE technology relationship
BP is investing in a range of Biofuels-related activities around the world, aimed at bringing Biofuels into the mainstream.
Any discussion of Biofuels begins with ethanol.
BP/DuPont relationship
