TB: Why does the worldneed a new format of oscil-loscope?

Mark Ashcroft: That comesdown to unfulfilled and rap-idly growing demand in thehigh-frequency oscilloscopeapplication space. Pico sup-

plies real-time oscilloscopes for as little as $100, rising in price,performance, and bandwidth to 1 GHz. Beyond this, for RF,microwave, and gigabit data applications, we supply ourPicoScope 9300 sampling oscilloscopes, addressing signal fre-quencies up to 25 GHz. We have gained a ‘go-to’ leader reputa-tion in these markets and are intimately aware of high demandfor low-cost, easy-to-use, high-frequency time domain instru-ments. Today, above a gigahertz, the number of competingoscilloscope suppliers falls dramatically (four worldwide), pric-ing rises equally steeply, and user compromise and frustrationhas very much set in.

TB: Why are high-frequency oscilloscopes so expensive?

Ashcroft: Back in 1928, Messers Nyquist, Shannon, Kotelnikov,and Whittaker all concluded that to sample any continuous analogwaveform into discrete sampled (digital) form we must have atleast two samples within a cycle of the highest frequency that wewish to represent. In practice, we have to go further than that if wewant to reveal waveshape detail or make meaningful repeatablemeasurements. In today’s real-time oscilloscopes, it is this thatdrives data bandwidth (Gb/s) to many times higher than analogbandwidth (GHz). We also see a trend now towards higher resolu-tion analog-to-digital converters, and both combine to drive rapid-ly escalating cost and/or compromise of maximum sampling rate!Thus, the hf RTO embeds high-cost A-D converters, logic arrays,and cache memory. Power needs and size also take a big hit.

TB: How then does your SXRTO pack 5-GHz bandwidth, 12-bit converters, and self-evident portability under a ticket of$14,995?

Ashcroft: The truth of that is a heavier reliance upon randomEquivalent Time Sampling (ETS). All hf oscilloscopes use ETS toextend their costly or compromised sampling rate to wellbeyond maximum available data bandwidth. This is essential tothe recovery of waveshape, serial data eye shape, precise tim-ing, meaningful measurements, statistics, analysis, and charac-terizations. But ETS can only do this if a waveshape or datastream is repetitive. Any uniquely occurring waveshape can

only be captured using the super-Nyquist real-time samplingmode and its limited data bandwidth. The Pico SXRTO actuallylimits data bandwidth a bit further, to the benefit of cost, power,and size. To close the gap, Pico has then developed the ETStechnique to a new level of speed and time-linearity. The 9404oscilloscope uses 12 bit A-Ds and a 500 MS/s data bandwidthbehind each channel. In a 5-GHz oscilloscope, this evidently issub-Nyquist sampling. Single event capture is compromised tousefulness only below 250 MHz. BUT those 12 bit A-Ds and ETSto 1 TS/s will match or exceed the performance of all availablereal-time oscilloscopes at a fraction of their cost!

TB: So the SXRTO is the best solution in some applications,not so great in others — right?

Ashcroft: That’s correct. If your microwave waveshapes arerepetitive, or a test can be designed to use repetitive signals,the SXRTO should be your choice. In fact, we don’t care howslowly repetitive or even how irregularly repetitive our wave-shape is. Internal full-bandwidth trigger paths will catch eachrepetition and reconstruct its precise wave or eye shape andtiming before, during, and after the trigger event. That said, ifyou need to capture unique events, or long data or modulationstreams, the SXRTO limits you to 250-MHz frequency contentor 500-Mb/s data rate, and memory length tops out at 250 kSa.

TB: What do you see for the future of high-frequency oscillo-scopes?

Ashcroft: If I plot a graph of typical price versus bandwidth, andI plot two curves, one for time domain instruments (e.g. oscillo-scopes and acquisition cards) and one for frequency domaininstruments (e.g. spectrum and modulation analysers), then Isee time domain instruments at higher and rapidly divergingcost. I also see frequency domain products driven by and keep-ing pace with ever higher demands for analysis bandwidth. Thetwo product types are very different of course, but increasingly,where a frequency domain measurement can do the job, it canbe the lower-cost approach. Time domain instrumentationneeds to respond to this. I believe that the SXRTO very muchdoes that, and that in principal, it is extensible to all existingRTO bandwidths and capture lengths. Further, the relatively lowcost per channel of the SXRTO will suit embedded ATE andother multi-channel applications. I am certain that the SXRTOwill gain an important share of the hf T&M market.

Accelerating SENT Troubleshooting andDebug Using an Oscilloscope

The SENT (Single Edge NibbleTransmission) bus continues togain acceptance across theautomotive industry and is

widely used to transmit high-resolutionreadings from powertrain sensors to anelectronic control unit (ECU). SENT isformally specified by SAE Internationaland is often referred to as SAE-J2716.As with most automotive serial proto-cols such as CAN and LIN, it is a low-cost, noise-immune system; however,SENT differs from the other standardsas it is a fairly lightweight, high-speed,point-to-point, one-way protocol specif-ically designed for real-time feedbackfrom critical operational measurementsensors.

At the physical layer, SENT is a three-wire system supplying data, power, andground across each wire. Signaling isaccomplished by driving the voltage ofthe data line, with a nominal low state of<0.5V and a high state of >4.1V. Elec -tromagnetic emissions are reduced byfiltering or “shaping” the waveform tran-sitions.

A SENT data packet is made up of thefollowing: sync/calibration, status, data,and an error check (cyclic redundancycheck or CRC). The sync/calibrationcomponent is fundamental to the trans-mission due to the very wide timing tol-erance (25 percent) allowed by theSENT protocol.

The absolute data transfer number iscalculated by measuring the length ofthe sync/calibration pulse. This derivedtiming is referred to as the tick time(TT), and the length of the sync/cali-bration pulse defines the tick time as it isalways represented as 56 ticks. If thelength of the sync/calibration pulse ismeasured as 171 μs, for example, thendividing this number by 56 gives a TT of3.05 μs. This measurement and all subse-quent measurements are made onfalling edge to falling edge — hence thename single edge.

The next part of the decode is basedon the nibble transmission. A byte iseight bits — eight bits divided by two

makes four bits, or a nibble. The nextmeasurement is the time between thenext two falling edges that correspondsto the time of four bits (or a nibble). Ifthe receiver measures 72.7 μs fallingedge to falling edge, dividing by 3.03 μsequals 24 ticks, which corresponds to anibble value of 1100. The nibble valueis calculated as follows: 0000 data valueis represented by a logic-high duration

of 12 ticks, 0001 is 13 ticks, and so onup to a 1111 binary data value repre-sented by a logic-high duration of 27ticks.

The SENT bus can transfer data at twodifferent rates simultaneously. The pri-mary data is normally transmitted inwhat is called the “fast channel” with theoption to simultaneously send secondarydata in the “slow channel.”

With advancements in manu-facturing processes andmaterials, components inmany industries are more

precise with a new level of complexshapes. There is significant demand tocreate parts and assemblies that performbetter, last longer, and cost less to make.Manufacturers are increasingly focusedon robotics or other automated systemsto produce, assemble, and inspect thesecomponents. The new generation ofrobotic manufacturing cells incorporatesadvanced metrology sensors that enablethem to perform tasks more accuratelyand with greater versatility. These roboticcells are typically referred to as MetrologyEnhanced Automation (MEA).

Quality’s Evolving RoleForward-thinking manufacturing pro-

fessionals understand the value of bring-ing the quality function closer to theshop floor where parts are made. Thegoal is to be able to feed dimensionaldata back into the process quickly toimprove the next part. While this is agood objective, what if quality becamean integral part of the manufacturingprocess instead of just getting close?

New MEA systems embed metrologysensors within the manufacturing cell tocreate a robotic system that is moreadaptable to part and process variabilityand can complete the inspection processat the same time. Envision this solutionas a more ubiquitous and integratedquality system where metrology sensorsact much like our own human senses andallow us to adjust to the world around us.

The Integrated Metrology andManufacturing Cell

A good example of a MEA system is alaser tracker integrated into a roboticcell. Laser trackers use encoders and a

laser interferometer to measure pointsin three-dimensional space to a highaccuracy. In the marketplace today,there are multitudes of laser trackersmeasuring components in aerospace,automotive, shipbuilding, and virtuallyany industry that manufactures productsthe size of a small car or bigger. The typ-

ical laser tracker accuracies are ±.001"within a 20-foot radius. The portablemeasurement system can also measureup to 262 feet with slightly less accuracy.

The laser tracker essentially becomespart of a feedback loop and can trackthe position of the robot’s tool centerpoint (TCP). Alignment features on a

Changing the Automation Conversation

This metrology enhanced automation cell is being utilized to verify operational accuracies for drilling in an aero-space environment. In a real-time control loop, the planned trajectory of the robot is constantly monitored by aLeica Absolute laser tracker. As the end effector starts to move or drift from the desired path, the deltas are thenfed back into the robot kinematics and the process repeats.

Meeting Healthcare Needs An idea of how medical product designers are using

advanced polymers to create innovations for use in

healthcare environments can be seen by examining a

few recent medical and healthcare products and their

materials.

A noninvasive nasal ventilation mask imposed a

challenging set of requirements for product developers

(Figure 1). The developers selected Grilamid TR60, a

BPA-free polymer that offers good chemical resistance

(dishwashing at 100 °C for 12 minutes), and also

satisfies USP Class VI biocompatibility requirements.

Grilamid TR60 offers the high heat resistance (170 °C)

needed to achieve high bonding strength (>70 N tensile

adhesion force) to liquid silicone rubber.

Another example is provided by the Crossbow fascial

closure system for minimally invasive surgery by Suture

Ease (Figure 2). Grilamid TR55 was selected to give the

product its desired characteristics of high mechanical

strength and toughness, low weight, good chemical

resistance, and sterilizability.

In a third example, developers of a bone cement

delivery system selected Grilamid TR 90 for several key

properties essential to the task (Figure 3). Grilamid TR

90 offers mechanical strength and toughness, high

chemical resistance, and high transparency — and is fully

compliant with USP Class VI biocompatibility standards.

The resulting device provides clinicians with a delivery

system especially suited to the needs of orthopedic

procedures requiring precise delivery of bone cement.

Healthcare Application Challenges Medical product developers enjoy success in many

fields but they must also overcome significant

challenges. Important developments for dealing with the

transmission of infectious diseases can be particularly

troublesome for product developers seeking to select the

right materials for medical devices.

To address the spread of nosocomial infections,

healthcare administrators and providers use a host of

cleaners and disinfectants that can have adverse effects

on the materials and components of medical devices.

Manufacturers and developers need to be selective about

the types and grades of polymers they specify for certain

applications.

Inappropriate selection of polymers can result in

degradation of the materials when exposed to hospital

cleaners and disinfectants, shortening the lifecycle of the

product and potentially raising the risk of device failure,

with the associated risk of harm to patients or providers.

Materials Selection A growing concern with medical devices is a tendency of

many polymeric materials to craze or crack when exposed

to solvents, including the chemical disinfectants typically

used in healthcare environments.

Preferred Format: PDF/X-1a:2003 (one page per file) Other formats may be accommodated on request. File Naming: PDFs should be named by the advertiser’s name, issue date, and PDF extension, ie. “COMSOL Ad 0920.pdf.” Size/Layout: Ad must be made to appropriate size. (See above) Bleed: Supply files with a minimum 1/8" (.125") bleed on all sides with crop marks offset at least 12 points or 1/8". Resolution: All PDFs must contain 300-dpi image files and 1200-dpi for line art. Images with higher resolutions will be downsampled accordingly. PDFs with lower resolutions will result in an inferior print quality that will not be the publisher’s responsibility. Compression: PDFs should have no compression. Fonts: All fonts must be embedded.

Color: All images must be in CMYK mode. Do not use RGB images, spot color or index color, and do not embed a color profile. PDFs with these color attributes will be converted to CMYK, which may result in an undesirable color shift. Publisher cannot be responsible for files supplied in formats other than CMYK. Output Preview: When viewing PDFs in Adobe Acrobat, activate “Simulate Overprint Preview” in the Advanced/Print Production/ Output Preview menu item to ensure what you see on-screen accurately represents what will print in the magazine. Proofs: Proofs that accurately represent the digital file are required for all digital file submissions. Publisher cannot be responsible for materials submitted without proofs.
