2 Teamwork Winter 07
So much has happened since I was putting
together some notes for last year’s
Christmas Teamwork and the year seems to
have sped by faster than ever!
Much of the year was coloured by the death
of my father who was in his 104th year –
quite an amazing innings during which he
achieved so much for all of us and for our
nation. It was heart warming to see so
many of his old colleagues at his
Thanksgiving Service on 19th May –
illustrating the strength which we all enjoy
as members of a dynamic family company.
The family nature of our business has given
us huge stability over many years and for
me this was underlined by our recent
Apprentice and Long Service Award
Presentations. I hope that some of our new
keen young apprentices will enjoy a lifetime
career with us and become future Long
Service Award achievers such as the 17
awards for thirty years of service and 8 for
forty years of service which I presented on
30th November. This brought the totals of
those who have qualified for awards to 618
for thirty years, 217 for 40 years and 28 with
50 years of service, a truly wonderful record
of which we are all very proud. I am
delighted that we are planning a special
dinner in our Centenary year to recognise
members of families who have collectively
achieved over 100 years of service working
in the Company.
It has been a year of fantastic progress on
many fronts. HIOS has bedded down well
and is making a real contribution to the RAF
at this time of huge strain on resources. Our
ADO has been refurbished and contains
state-of-the-art IT and communications
equipment, ASC2 has been completed and
we’ve expanded our work with overseas
C-130 operators. All our Aerospace
subsidiary divisions, Aeropeople,
Aerostructures, Marshall Test Services and
Marshall Solutions, are making excellent
progress in the marketplace.
Motor Group has come through a tough year
in the retail trade full of fighting spirit and has
recently extended its Vauxhall operations
through the purchase of Lisles covering
Stevenage, Welwyn Garden City, Hitchin and
Knebworth. Marshall Leasing continues to
grow its business well, including through the
excellent progress of its recently acquired
Gates Leasing company.
The rebuilt engineering division of MSV has
settled well into our Mildenhall premises
where, by the end of November, it had
produced nearly 500 specialist truck bodies
for MAN on behalf of the MoD. MSV’s
mobile Military Field Hospitals are
performing well for Norway and we are
delighted to be busy creating more of these
very special lifesaving hi-tech field hospitals
for our good friends in Norway.
MTK has been fighting courageously in an
extremely thin and difficult marketplace in
which it has been under huge pressure from
competition during recent years.
All in all it has been a very full year and I am
enormously grateful to all our wonderful
staff. Together we seek always to go the
extra mile to satisfy and delight all our
customers, and this, combined with our
family spirit, has always been one of the
hallmarks of our success.
I wish you and all your families a very happy
and restful Christmas and, above all, a
happy and prosperous 2008.
Once again Marshall employees from across the Group dug
deep to support the Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee
Morning. Coffee Mornings were organised in Cambridge,
Ipswich and at Marshall Vauxhall / Alfa Romeo in Hitchin with
other areas of the Group getting involved selling raffle tickets.
Nearly £5,300 was raised, the highest sum ever. Well done to
all those involved with making such a success of the morning.

As a follow on to the award of a Shelter Production contract, as
announced in the Spring 2007 issue of Teamwork, a further order
has been placed by the Swedish FMV for MSV to undertake further
Shelter installation work.
The order, for three shelters initially, comprises installation and
integration of communications, fibre optics and audio visual
systems, along with provision and installation of office furniture and
installation of video screens.
The completed shelters are due for delivery to FMV around June
2008 and will provide Swedish and NATO forces with deployable
Command and Control centres.
Marshall SV is continuing to increase involvement with the main contenders for the forthcoming FRES programme.
FRES is the UK MoD's programme to deliver a fleet of wheeled and tracked armoured vehicles to the British Army that is rapidly deployable,
network-enabled, capable of operating across the spectrum of operations, and protected against the most likely threats. These vehicles are
expected to be in service for up to 40 years. The FRES fleet is expected to comprise five families of vehicles: Utility; Reconnaissance; Fire;
Manoeuvre Support and a range of simpler variants known as the ‘Basic Capability Unit’.
The total FRES fleet could comprise as many as 3,000 vehicles of which the greater
proportion, possibly as many as 2,000, will be Utility vehicles. It is the largest ever Army
programme with an acquisition value of around £16 billion, and through-life costs of £60
billion. The MoD has stated that it is aiming at an Initial Operating Capability for FRES in
2012. The Utility platforms will enter service first, followed soon after by the
Reconnaissance platforms.
FRES represents a major opportunity for Marshall SV in areas of system design and
installation for Medical, C4I, CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological or Nuclear)
Recovery Vehicle and Load Beds.

MSV has been contracted to design and build a “demonstrator” 14’ ISO Container Ground Control Station (GCS) for BAeS
Insyte at Chelmsford. The GCS is required to supplement the BAeS Herti UAV programme which is being managed by their
end customer; BAeS Systems at Warton in Lancashire.
Comprising onboard power generation and environmental control, the shelter is intended to form the basis of a range of
Ground Control Stations for both military and commercial applications.

Marshall Executive Aviation (MEA), based at Cambridge City Airport,
is building on its success in the executive jet charter market by
adding three extra Citation XLS aircraft to its fleet. Established in
2003, MEA has seen its business grow as its reputation for first class
service has spread throughout the market.
The three Citation XLS aircraft will continue the Company’s long
association with the Cessna Aircraft Company and will add an extra
dimension to the Company’s capability to enable it to satisfy
customer demand for spacious and comfortable aircraft suited to the
widest range of business and private travel requirements.
Chief Pilot Peter Stroud expressed his excitement at the higher level
of service and comfort that the new aircraft will provide and how much
he is looking forward to flying clients to their destination of choice.
Operation of the first new aircraft will commence in January 2008 with
phased introduction of the second and third over the following two years

Marshall Aerospace Business Aviation is expanding at the Airport in
Cambridge. A Cessna-Authorised Service Centre for over 30 years,
the company has seen its Business Aviation division grow
significantly from 2005 to the point where it now needs to add
additional hangar capacity and full service facilities.
The £4.5m development at the Cambridge site will incorporate a
purpose-built integrated MRO (Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul)
facility and FBO (Fixed Base Operation) with customer
accommodation, where a full suite of services will be available to the
corporate flyer, from exclusive customer lounge facilities on two
levels, flight crew sleep cabins and quiet rooms, to special planning
and weather centres, and catering for passengers and aircraft. A
25,000 sq ft hangar will also be built adjacent to the existing facility,
thereby integrating both hangars and the new FBO facility together.
Customer fleet offices will also be available.
Utilising specific construction and design methods, the new facilities
will be fully adaptable to incorporate further growth and change, and
will enjoy outstanding ease of access for passengers and crews
alike. Within the FBO, there will be high specification conference
rooms and communication suites. Marshall will also provide
integrated full chauffeur services from its own dedicated cars and
drivers able to connect passengers directly into London and beyond.

Vulcan Returns to the Sky
Thursday, 18th October marked an
important day for aviation history as it saw
Vulcan XH558 return to the skies once more.
For the past ten years, the Vulcan to the Sky
Trust team has worked hard towards this
huge achievement, with engineering support
provided by Marshall Aerospace for the past
two and a half years.
Flown by a crew made up of ex-RAF
Vulcan display pilots, veterans of the
Falklands conflict and other experienced
aircrew, XH558’s initial public appearance
was in front of Vulcan to the Sky Trust
members, project Friends and supporters
who have donated funds to make this first
flight possible.
Marshall Aerospace has signed a further agreement with CAV Aerospace which will see
the Company’s manufacturing division continue to make aircraft stringers for a further 5
years at its Cambridge facility. The stringers which are produced for CAV are ultimately for
Airbus and are in support of a range of aircraft types; A318, A319, A320, A321, A330,
A340-500, A340-600 and A380.
Since the initial contract was signed in April 2006 to set up a stringer preparation
machining facility at Cambridge, Marshall Aerospace has worked closely with CAV
Aerospace to produce 13,600 stringers, which has demonstrated to them how the
Company is able to provide an efficient and adaptable machining service.
Building on the success of the working contract and as a result of this further agreement, a second phase of investment has now begun in the
Manufacturing facility which will reflect this growth and partnering. The facility at Cambridge currently houses a 40 metre Alumax long bed gantry
mill which enables the division to carry out preparation machining operations on stringers up to 22 metres in length. The second twin spindle
bridge on this machine is now fully commissioned and will be used initially for machining stringers complete. Further upgrades to additional
machines are underway, including the procurement of a second swarf compactor, which will be used in conjunction with the new long bed
machine. One of these compactors is already operating in the stringer machining facility, which provides a cleaner and more efficient method of
handling and disposal of swarf.
Malcolm Roberts, Head of Business for Marshall Aerospace Manufacturing, said, “We are very proud of our association with CAV Aerospace Ltd
in support of Airbus UK, and hope to develop a greater working relationship together which will continue well into the future.” Mike Eggleston,
Head of Programmes at CAV Aerospace, confirmed that “CAV Aerospace’s vision is to provide our customers with a world class product, service
and supply chain in our areas of expertise. Our association with Marshall Aerospace has helped us greatly in achieving this goal and as such
we will continue to work together to develop our mutual business relationship.”

Lisles Acquisition completed
Chief Executive’s Challenge - ‘Make their Day’
Marshall Motor Group successfully completed the acquisition of Lisles Motor Repairs Ltd in September.
The former-Lisles Group, encompassing 3 sites (Knebworth, Hitchin and Welwyn Garden City), is being run under the
leadership of Peter Campbell who transfers from Cambridge Chrysler Jeep. At the Hitchin site Marshall now represents
Vauxhall and Alfa Romeo with Vauxhall also in Knebworth and Welwyn Garden City. In addition, the Group has acquired two
filling stations, in Knebworth and Hitchin. All former Lisles Employees have transferred to Marshall.
This acquisition strengthens the Group’s relationship with Vauxhall and reintroduces Alfa Romeo, a franchise Marshall
previously represented in Peterborough. Geographically these businesses fit well with Marshall, building on the southern edge
of the Group’s existing territory.
Marshall Motor Group has invested a significant amount of money in
leadership training for the entire management team and front-line
reception staff over the past few months, a programme that will
continue into 2008. As part of this training delegates were introduced
to the FISH! principles (adapted to CARS for Marshall - Be There /
Choose Your Attitude / Make Their Day Special / Play) and it is these
principles that were moulded into the Chief Executive’s challenge for
the period July – September 2007.
Roger Knight, Chief Executive, set the challenge to all Motor Group
dealerships to work as a team to generate ideas on how they can turn
an “ordinary day” for customers into “something special”. Each team
elected a Team Champion to lead the programme in their dealership.
The Champion was responsible for pulling together the teams’ ideas
and initiatives for submission to the Board prior to implementing the
plan at dealership level. The Team Champion’s job was to ensure
that the whole team supported and acted upon these initiatives.
The winners of the third quarter Chief Executives Challenge were the
team at Marshall Nissan in Cambridge. The team, led by Team
Champion, Jamie Shea, did a fantastic job in trying to ensure that the
customers visiting the branch had a memorable experience. Jamie
was presented with a Fortnum & Mason food hamper and the
team get £100 a head to spend on a team event which is still
being planned.
Management trainees Marshall Motor Group held two assessment days for the recruitment of four
management trainees with the chance to undertake a BSc (Hons) in Automotive
Dealership Management at Loughborough University. The day consisted of
applicants meeting their possible mentors, group activities and presentations at the
PAG site in Peterborough. After careful consideration the four candidates have
been selected.
After an insightful induction week all four employees are now looking forward to immersing
themselves in their respective dealerships and said “We hope to be able to provide a fresh
perspective to the motor industry, with the chance to learn and progress.”

Marshall delivers 100th DAF truck to Turners (Soham) Ltd.
Local transport company Turners (Soham) Ltd recently took delivery of
their 100th DAF tractor unit from the team at Cambridge DAF.
Aspecial handover was organised by Edward Parry, FranchiseManager.
Following a celebratory lunch and tour of the Marshall Group’s Airport
facility in Cambridge, the truck was handed over to Franklin Turner,
Director of Turners, in front of Marshall’s huge wide-body aircraft Hangar.
Edward Parry said: “Turners are a very important customer for Marshall
and I wanted to mark this milestone in a special way. Both of our
companies are successful private, family-owned businesses and I was
delighted that Franklin Turner was able to take time out of his busy
schedule to collect this new vehicle personally.”
Turners (Soham) Ltd operate over 800 trucks nationwide and employ
over 1,300 people. They are specialists in bulk tanker operations and
temperature-controlled distribution and are also a customer of Marshall
Thermo King.
The team at Cambridge DAFworks hard tomaintain the relationship they
have built with Turners since the relationship began in late 2001. Richard
Feast, Truck Consultant, is responsible for negotiating and satisfying all
the customer’s requirements when it comes to buying DAF vehicles.
This involves detailed discussions with the Turners senior management
team, planning their fleet replacement programme, which is now well into
2008. Michelle Morris, Sales Office Supervisor, prepares all
documentation relating to the sales process and has worked at
Cambridge DAF for 18 years. Graham Airey, Workshop Technician, is
responsible for all the mechanical preparation of the vehicle ensuring
they meet DAF Truck standards together with those of the operator.
Graham started with the business as an apprentice 44 years ago. Paul
Garner, Motorclean valeter, ensures that every truck going to Turners is
presented in the best possible way. Trucks demand the same standard
of cleanliness as cars and Paul’s 10 years experience is used to get them
looking good prior to delivery.

Adam Lockwood, a third year apprentice at Marshall Vauxhall in Ipswich,
has recently been awarded the national title of Vauxhall Apprentice of the
Year. Adam, pictured bottom left, had to beat all 1st, 2nd and 3rd year
Vauxhall apprentices in the country to win this title, which was assessed
on technical knowledge and practical ability. As Adam’s employer and
sponsor, Marshall Vauxhall also picked up the Apprentice Sponsor’s
Award. Adam said: “I thought I had a chance when I got through to the
final but was really chuffed to win.”
A third year apprentice at Marshall Peugeot in Cambridge, Steven
Gent, came 3rd in the Peugeot Apprentice of the Year competition.
During the competition, Steven had to complete eight tasks
throughout a day in Newport, Wales, including an interview, an exam,
and cambelt and safety checks. Steven’s final position in the
Apprentice of the Year competition was a fitting end to his
apprenticeship which he has just completed.

Approximately a quarter of MTK engineers are based predominantly at a customer’s site. MTK engineer
Martin Wilson works from Turners’ Soham depot alongside both MTK and Turners’ engineers. How does
his typical day differ from that of a mobile engineer? “First, I’m a bit more involved in the admin – I get
the defect sheet each morning and prioritise the jobs. I’ll order Thermo King parts and ring into the Call
Centre to liaise on any offsite breakdowns.” Martin also provides basic training to drivers, so that they are
more confident in diagnosing faults. Kevin Rampley, Workshop Manager at Turners commented “It’s
good to have an experienced engineer with up-to-date product knowledge right on hand, who can pass
on that knowledge to our engineers. I give them a daily worksheet and leave them to get on with it!” This
win-win arrangement provides obvious benefits to both parties, not least of which is that Turners
purchased around 30 Thermo King units from us over the last year!
MTK has also been involved in another first – the installation of the first Thermo King
ST-CR Liquid Carbon Dioxide Cryogenic System in the UK. Houghton Regis
engineers fitted the unit to a Mercedes truck on behalf of Tesco. As with any new
product, a few problems emerged, not least of which was whether the bulkhead
could take the weight of the fuel tank. The two major benefits to this technology are:
the green credentials (the CO2 used is a bi-product of fertilizer production); and its
virtual silent operation. The truck was unveiled to the European media in Stuttgart
during the first week of November, before returning to Tesco’s Harlow depot for use
in London where fuel emissions and noise levels are being closely monitored. If
proven, Tesco has indicated that it will buy 20 further vehicles.
It has to be said that finding exciting and unusual stories about the fitting and fixing
of fridges onto vehicles is not always easy! The majority of jobs are routine and
the average day for the average engineer (if there is such a thing!) is fairly
predictable. However, MTK has recently been involved in various projects which
are slightly out of the ordinary.
On October 25th, the world’s biggest passenger plane, the Airbus A380, made its
first commercial flight from Singapore to Sydney. With a wingspan of 80m, the
plane boasts 50% more floor space than its nearest rival, the Boeing 747, and can
fly 9000 miles without refuelling. But the aircraft’s incredible 24m height posed
problems for loading supplies. Norwich-based Emtek Support Ltd spent 7 months
designing and manufacturing two 26-tonne machines capable of reaching the
8.2m high doors and both units will be fitted with a Thermo King V700 fridge.
MTK engineers Martin Wilson and Tom Rose have completed the first installation on
the Mercedes chassis. An external company had to custom make a bracket for the
compressor and the MTK engineers had to extend the standard pipework and wiring,
working to the specification of Australian company Byron Aviation. Martin Fowler,
Technical Director at Emtek, is a firm supporter of TK product and is delighted with
the interest being shown in the hi-lift vehicle which sells for around £200,000.

Andrew Palmer, who works as a Diagnostic Technician at Marshall
Honda Peterborough, has won the World of Shale title, which is one
of the top championships in BriSCA Formula Two Stock Cars.
Andrew started working for Marshall in 1997 as a trainee technician,
and has always been into car racing, in fact, having started racing in
a Mini at the age of 14.
Andrew started racing BriSCA (British Stock Car Association)
Formula Two Stock Cars in 1999 and has moved up the ranks to be
one of the current top drivers. The cars are purpose-built and
powered by a 2 litre engine. It is an international formula, with tracks
from Cornwall right up to Scotland, and also in Northern Ireland, Isle
of Man, and the Netherlands. The formula boasts over 500 registered
drivers in the UK alone, and the tracks are either tarmac or shale.
The World of Shale title is Andrew’s most significant win to date,
having previously taken 2nd and 3rd places in the race in the last two
years and also achieving second in the British championship some
years ago. The race this year took place at Mildenhall Stadium.
Andrew started on the third Row of the grid and as soon as the green
flag dropped he raced to second place behind another local driver,
Allen Cooper from Huntingdon. On lap 3 he overhauled Allen and
then never put a wheel wrong in the rest of the 25 lap race.
Andrew completes around 60 races during the season which runs from
March through to November. He has two cars, both of which are built by
Randall Motorsport based near Wisbech, one being set up for tarmac
and the other one for shale. He is planning another campaign for next
season, hoping to win many more titles in the sport and will no doubt be
travelling all over the country and to Holland to hopefully win them!

part in the Annual Chariots of Fire Race held
on Sunday, 23 September. Almost 400
teams (2,200 divided into teams of six) took
part with each member of the team running
one lap of the picturesque 1.7 mile course
which took in Kings' College, Clare College
and Trinity College. This year's race will
benefit the Arthur Rank Hospice at Home
Service. Mr Michael Marshall is the
Honorary President of the race, having
taken over this prestigious appointment from
his late father, Sir Arthur Marshall. During his
speech at the prize giving, Mr Marshall paid
tribute to the enthusiasm of the runners
taking part. The Arthur Marshall Trophy for
the fastest team overall was awarded to the
Glassworks Gymnasium A Team who
achieved a time of 50 minutes 40 seconds.
The fastest Marshall Team was the Marshall
Aerospace Training School who finished in
15th place overall in a very creditable 1 hour
4 minutes and 46 seconds. In the
photograph Mr Michael Marshall is seen
presenting the Marshall Trophy to the
Training School Team.
Romsey Mill is a Cambridge Charity based in the former
Romsey Mill just off Mill Road, which creates
opportunities for young people and families, and in
particular those from a deprived background. Six young
people from Romsey Mill visited Marshall of Cambridge in
early November to learn a little about the opportunities for
employment with Marshall of Cambridge and are pictured

Dodge Nitro takes tothe track at Santa Pod
It’s a done deal
The powerful new Dodge Nitro took to the track for its debut
appearance during the Top Fuel Drag Races at Santa Pod Raceway
during September. Supplied by Marshall of Cambridge
Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge, the boldly styled SUV was used as a support
vehicle by the Rune Field Motorsport team and was used to tow their
dragster to the start line during the European Finals event.
The Rune Field Motorsport Top Fuel Dragster is capable of some
truly eye-watering performance statistics, including a top speed of
311mph. Its engine, which runs on Nitromethane fuel – known as
‘Nitro’ among drag racing fans – produces 7000bhp and powers the
vehicle from 0-100mph in under a second and will cover ¼ mile (1320
feet) in just 4.78 seconds!
The team reached the semi finals and finished third in the FIA Top
Fuel Championship thanks to the sterling talents of its driver Thomas
Nataas, runner up in last year’s FIA European Top Fuel
Championship and named Drag Racer of the Year 2006.
Jeff Manni, Sales Manager at Cambridge Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge, said:
“The amazing powerplant in the team’s dragster is an 8-litre V8 HEMI
– which is related to the famous Dodge engines found in the
marque’s muscle cars like the Charger back in the ‘60s and ‘70s.
Hence why the Nitro was the ideal car for this event and more than
20,000 people saw it towing the Top Fueller in the pit lane and to and
from the start line, so we were delighted to be able to help.”
The Avenance team in the Airport
Works restaurant also put on their
fundraising caps for Children in Need
and raised £1,369 by selling Pudsey
shortbreads and holding a raffle with a
range of prizes. There was also a
chance to sponsor Jaison and William
who bravely volunteered to have their
legs waxed! Well done to all concerned.
Paul Jenkins, Facilities Co-ordinator at the East Anglian Children’s Hospice (EACH),
recently took delivery of seven vehicles from the team at Citroen in Cambridge. This
is the second order from EACH in three years and the latest handover consisted of
two Berlingo Multispace, two C3s and three Xsara Picassos.
