Reading Enrichment Unit Theme Reading Unit Grade: Fifth Time Frame: 3 class periods in Media Center Rationale: Students were learning theme in their classroom so this lesson will reinforce what they are learning in their classroom. However some confused plot with theme so this unit will be over differentiating between theme and plot. Students will create a poster about the theme in Teammates and will justify their theme choice by writing a paragraph. Standards: Georgia Performance Standards ELACC5RL2: Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text. ELACC5SL4: Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace. ELACC5L2: Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. 21 st Century Skills

First Class Period:1. The teacher will post on the board that plot is the narrative of the story

2. The teacher will show the SlideShare about theme but only the first three slides about the Boy Who Cried Wolf

3. Then the teacher will show the slides about theme (making sure that students understand theme is inferred)

4. After theme has been explained, the teacher will show students the multiple choice slide about theme

5. In small groups students will create a sentence to sum up theme.Second Class Period:

1. The teacher will remind students that theme has to do with inferencing2. The teacher will read aloud Teammates by Peter Golenbock3. While the teacher is reading she will do think alouds, ie racial inequality could

lead to anger (inferencing) 4. On chart paper, the teacher will write Themes and then under that write racial

inequality and anger5. The teacher will continue charting her think alouds throughout the story6. Afterwards, there will be a discussion about big ideas (theme) found in the story7. The teacher will pass out paper and have students work in small groups to finish

the discussion (one person in the group will record responses)8. The group will come together and add their big ideas to the chart9. The discussion will wrap up

Third Class Period:1. The teacher and students will recount Teammates2. The students will review over theme and the poster that they created in the

previous class3. Students will chose a theme from the book and will create a poster illustrating the

theme that they chose4. Students will also write a paragraph describing how this theme was demonstrated

in the book
