Mission Overview Objective

To determine if future spacecraft will be able to utilize energy generated by vibrational and rotational motion as additional energy sources

To determine if more energy can be generated from vibrational motion or rotational motion

What we hope to prove and discover A significant amount of energy can be produced from the motion of the satellite A satellite can generate enough energy to power some systems

Hypothesis Rotational motion will produce more energy than vibrational motion

Why we are doing this mission To develop an alternative method of generating power for spacecraft

Rotational Generator TestOct. 17th

•The Rotational Generator was hooked up to an oscilloscope and the magnets were spun around the coils. •The oscilloscope measured the Voltage outputted by the generator•This test was to tell the team if the Rotational Generator would perform as expected.•Conclusion: The Rotational Generator worked as well as expected. No modifications were needed.

•Tested our HOBO and Micro-controller for 2 hours •Used 5lbs of Dry Ice in a styrofoam cooler•The test was to see if all of our electronics were still running after the test period.•All of the electronics were still on and operating after the test period.

•Turned on the camera and tested its ability to take pictures for an extended period of time.•The test ran for 30 minutes.•The camera ran smoothly and took a picture every 20 seconds

Example Picture

Drop Test Oct. 28th

•The structure was dropped from different heights in order to find its weak points so that they could be fixed. •The reason for this test was mainly to ensure that the balloon sat and the data within would not get destroyed upon landing.•Conclusion: After six drop tests a seal on one side broke, probably due to the fact that the rock broke loose of the tape holding it down and smashed into the corner. Team Lightning Rod still judged this test as a success because the balloon sat only has to endure one drop/landing. The break can be seen in the picture below.

Broken seam after sixth drop.

Whip TestOct. 28th

•The prototype structure (weighted properly) was attached to a string and swung around in circles. •This tested both the ability of their structure to endure the whipping motion after burst as well as the structure’s ability to maintain a good hold onto the flight rope.•Conclusion: The satellite passed this test easily as the balloon sat retained a firm hold on the flight string and there was no damage whatsoever to the structure itself.

Flight Simulation TestOct. 17th

•The fully constructed satellite was initially spun on a table with one side left open so that the team could see that generators were performing correctly under the expected flight conditions. •The next stage of this test was to hang the fully sealed box over the edge of the table to see if it were balanced properly and if it would spin and shake as the team hoped it would.•Conclusion: The structure passed this test because the team was able to see that both generators were enduring enough motion to produce a discernable amount of energy.

Flight String

BalloonSat

Expected Results

The generators will produce a measurable amount of power

More power from rotational generator than from the vibrational generator

Higher energy output during turbulence Highest energy output during burst Results independent of temperature and

pressure

Biggest Worries

Time constraint Generator failure Glitches in the programming Component failure Generator breaking on impact Too many magnetic fields
