Mission Overview

The mission of Team Lightning Rod is to send Zeus, a cubic balloon satellite built from foam core and equipped with an electromagnetic generator, to an altitude of thirty kilometers. Zeus will harness the vibrational energy experienced during its ascent and descent. A microcontroller will measure the amount of energy the electromagnetic generator produces. By analyzing the data collected, we will determine if future spacecraft will be able to utilize vibrational energy as an additional alternative energy source.

Budget

• Budget– Spending Limit $300– Cost of Supplies $185 + shipping– Weight Limit 850 g– Estimated Weight 700 g

Worries

• Vibration generator failure

• Not enough vibration to create energy

• Glitches in the programming

• Component failure

• Generator breaking on impact

• The generator producing too much energy and lighting on fire, destroying everyone’s projects.
