(April 30, 2015) --- Dante Gallucci, a 16 year old student-athlete from Rotterdam who has been fighting stage 4 T-Cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma, a high risk form of blood cancer for two years has joined forces with local businesses and the Harlem Wizards to raise money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). Each year, LLS raises funds to advance research in therapy, education, support, and advocacy for blood cancer patients. All over the country, candidates and their teams compete to raise the most money, and LLS names the candidates who raise the most money “Man & Woman of the Year.” On Sunday, May 3 at 12 p.m., Team Dante will face off against the Harlem Wizards in the Viniar Athletic Center at Union College. Gallucci’s battle with cancer began not with his own diagnosis, but when he met and was deeply moved by the story of the 2013 LLS Woman of the Year. “It was very difficult to hear her personal struggle to attend prom with no hair,” Gallucci recalls, speaking of his friend. One month later, in what seemed like a tragic act of fate, Dante was diagnosed with the same disease. Even at age 14, Dante was a leader in his community. A model student, a class officer, and a three-sport athlete, Dante’s unstoppable drive shows in everything he does, and he does not plan on letting cancer get in his way. In his own words: “I’m an athlete who has experienced the thrill of being a champion. Defeat is never an option!” Dante is also a spokesperson and Ambassador for the American Red Cross’ “Dunkin Donors Make a Difference” campaign. This is Dante’s second annual charity fundraiser, and this year, he’s going up against reputable business leaders and executive members in his campaign for LLS Man of the Year. Dante’s grassroots efforts are supported by his family and friends, as well as many local business leaders who are inspired by his story, including Printz and Patternz Founder and President Daniel Crowley. Time Warner Cable News Sports Director Marisa Jacques, Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara (D-Rotterdam), and U.S. Olympic snowboarding coach Bill Enos and many others have joined Team Dante’s ranks. Tickets to the event will be $10 at the door. All proceeds benefit Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Upstate New York. Doors open at 11:15 a.m. For more information about LLS, visit www.lls.org. ###
