A Powerful Voice for Abused Kids Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) provides a powerful voice for abused kids by advocating for foster children within the court system, because with CASA, children are more likely to find a safe, permanent home. At first, Monica did not believe Savannah’s mother would ever be able to provide a safe and stable home for her daughter. The mother’s health was so poor that she struggled through court-ordered services; however, Monica kept an open mind and maintained good communication and a positive relationship with Savannah’s mother. Because of this, Monica came to see that she was in fact quite capable. She eventually completed all her services, and Monica advocated for Savannah to be returned home. Savannah has been happily returned to her mother’s care, and is doing well. NOTE: Savannah’s story is real, but her name and picture have been changed to protect her identity. Savannah was not your typical 5 year old child. Because of her mother’s medical condition, Savannah was the main caretaker in the household. She made dinner, did the laundry and kept things in order as best she could at her young age. One day a friend arrived at the home to discover that Savannah’s mother was incoherent and had been completely unable to care for Savannah for three days. Savannah was removed and placed into foster care. The Juvenile Court Judge requested a CASA volunteer for Savannah, and Monica was appointed to be her advocate. Savannah often acted out in the foster home due to anger and frustration: she destroyed property and hurt herself. She had speech and language delays. Monica realized early on that it was essential for Savannah to have structure in the home as well as consistent counseling and developmental therapy. She advocated for Savannah to be placed in a therapeutic foster home more appropriate for her needs. Not only did Savannah’s foster home change, so did her case worker and therapist. Monica was a constant support to Savannah through it all, visiting her regularly and letting her know she was there for her.

I have now enjoyed the change of all four seasons at the CASA house. September 1st marked my one-year anniversary here. It has been a wonderful year of change. I am so grateful for the warm welcome that I have received on all levels and I am very happy in my new home. While I have not yet met all of our 239 CASAs or 5,000+ donors, I have had the pleasure of introducing myself to a large number of you.

Our team has spent time getting to know each other through fun team building activities, strategic planning and good old-fashioned conversation. Those efforts are being rewarded later this month as we are being recognized as one of the Top 100 Nonprofits to work for in the state of Oregon by Oregon Business Magazine. This award is especially meaningful as it is based on an anonymous survey taken by 100% of our staff.

Our organization is now building on the solid foundation that has been laid for the past 20 years. In 2015-2016, we advocated for 404 children in the care of the child welfare system. We trained 52 new CASAs and 10 new Peer Coordinators. In the pages that follow, you will find that we have worked very hard to secure $785,000 inprivate funding to support our work.

Looking to the future, we are actively working to build awareness in the rural communities that we serve in Lane County. We are carefully assessing ouragency at all levels to fully understand and most effectively serve our diverseclientele. These efforts will combine to help us recruit more CASAs to ultimatelyserve more children.

Thank you for supporting the critical role that CASA plays in the lives of somany vulnerable children in Lane County!

Respectfully,

Heather Murphy

This year CASA has served more single-child households than in previous years. Because of this, we have had more CASAs take on second cases.

Planned GivingThis year CASA received two generous planned gifts. The two gifts were different in the nature of their bequeath, but both served to honor the memory of these philanthropic women. The first gift was a planned gift from Harriet Smith, a donor to CASA for many years. She left a generous bequeath to CASA as a legacy of her support and passion for providing a powerful voice for children in Lane County. While saddened by her passing, we are humbled that she chose to give one last gift to support the work of our advocates. The second was a unique way of giving that allowed those Robin Jacqua loved to give to their own passions through her bequeath. At her memorial service, attendees were asked to submit anorganization to receive $1,000. Five people named CASA as the beneficiary giving CASA $5,000 in total fromRobin’s fund at the Oregon Community Foundation.

Planned giving is a great vehicle to continue your legacy. Please consult your estate planner for more information on the benefits

planned giving can have for you.

Around CASACASA Perspectiveby Dawn Easley

Corporate HighlightReynolds Electric has been a supporter of CASA in many ways, most recently as a Title Sponsor at Casino Night. Reynolds Electric is no stranger to philanthropy and giving back to theircommunity. Jeremy Reynolds, third generation owner andoperator of Reynolds Electric, has a passion for protecting andsupporting children. “I was born and raised in Eugene and that’s where I’m raising my children. There’s a lot of value in giving back to the community who has allowed you to keep a business running,” he says.

Jeremy prides the business as relying on word of mouth and repeat customers. “We’re relation-based contractors,” he says. Jeremy states that giving back to the community is not only fulfilling but he is sure he gains additional business. “As a consumer, I live by supporting corporations who support worthy causes. I am much more inclined to patronize a business when I see what they do in the community,” hesays.

Right now Jeremy is comfortable with his contribution being financial, but has plans to become a CASA in the future. We are thankful for Jeremy and his team at Reynolds Electric for all they do to support CASA and our most vulnerable children!

Dawn became a CASA in Spring of 2016. She advocates for four siblings ranging in

age from 3 to 15.

Over the years I have heard about CASA, an organization that helps children in our commu-nity. I knew I wanted to volunteer in a way that could make an im-pact, and that’s why I became intrigued with Court Appointed Special Advocacy. Iresearched more into

CASA and decided to go to an orientation. After learning about this program and what a significant impact they have in support-ing the children of our community, I knew it was all for me. Little did I know this was going to be something that would change my life in such an amazing way. Although the situations are heart-breaking, I get to be the voice and advocate for a child’s needs. I get to make sure that, at this mo-ment in time, they are safe and getting what they need. That is so rewarding to me.

From the intensive training and being on my case, I have learned so much about being a CASA, and I appreciate how fortunate I am. I understand life takes a toll on us in different ways. I understand that I cannot judge others, as I have not walked in their shoes, and that we all have the potential for change. I have learned that every child deserves and needs to have a voice and someone to advocate for them and to help protect them. Not every case is easy but that is why this program is sodetrimental to a child in the child welfare system.

I am proud and honored to call myself a CASA. Every day, I am thankful for the oppor-tunity to make this impact in our community.

CASA Board and Staff wear blue for Wear Blue Lane County, April 2016
