Four year degree from a college. Preferably in the area you wish to teach.

Student teaching with a master teacher.

Salary and Benefits

Starting salaries varies among school districts.

Beginning salary is also based on the number of credits you have earned beyond your bachelor degree.

You can earn stipends for extra duties such as coaching or teaching summer school.

Benefits include medical, dental and vision. You will have to be aware of the various plans and their expense by working with your HR division.

You will contribute into STRS-retirement. Some districts offer other benefits such as life insurance.

Employment Opportunities

It depends on the area. Check with Edjoin-digital hiring system used by many school districts.

Consider applying for positions at private, charter and county office programs.

Being a substitute helps you gain experience and can help you get a job with a school that you enjoy subbing at.

Advancement depends upon your goals. Such as administration, counseling, curriculum and instruction or technology.

A master’s degree allows you greater opportunity for advancement.

Getting another credential or supplementary authorization is also advancement.
