Teach Like
JesusJosh Hunt
It is not enough to teach what Jesus taught.
We need to teach how
Jesus taught.
Jesus didn’t. . . • Do any advertising.• Have an outreach
strategy.• Follow up on prospects.• Contact absentees.• Do visitation.• Promote his meetings.• Do marketing.
Jesus did. . . • Tell people not to tell.• Seem to prefer the
small group over the crowd.
• Sometimes avoid the crowds.
• Have huge crowds.
Jesus’ teaching was amazing!
• Matthew 7:28 (NIV) When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching,
• Matthew 13:54 (NIV) Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed.
• Mark 1:22 (NIV) The people were amazed at his teaching.
• Mark 1:27 (NIV) The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching--and with authority!
Jesus’ teaching was amazing!

People don’t remember sermons or speeches—they don’t even remember paragraphs. What people remember are. . . slogans.

QuestionsReward
Jesus asked questions• John 6:5-6 (NIV) When Jesus
looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.

We are changed more by
what we say than what
we hear.

Matthew 15:18 (NIV) But the
things that come out of the mouth
come from the heart, and these
make a man “unclean.”
Does what comes out of
your mouth reveal the
heart, or change the
heart?

3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to
make them obey us, we can turn the
whole animal.
4 Or take ships as an example. Although
they are so large and are driven by strong
winds, they are steered by a very small rudder
wherever the pilot wants to go.
Jesus asked questions• Romans 10:9 (NIV) That
if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Lewis said, “We are far too easily
pleased.” Almost all of Christ’s commands are motivated by “the unblushing promises
of reward.”

promised in the Gospels, it would seem that our

weak.”— The Dangerous Duty of

“God is more interested in
your holiness than your
happiness.”
Matthew 6:1-6 (NIV)
“Be careful not to do your ‘acts of
righteousness’ before men, to be
seen by them. If you do, you will have no
reward from your Father in heaven.
StoriesProverbsQuestionsReward
“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on
the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
StoriesProverbsQuestionsReward
3 But when you give to the
needy, do not let your left hand know
what your right hand is doing,
StoriesProverbsQuestionsReward
4 so that your giving may be in
secret. Then your Father, who sees
what is done in secret, will
reward you. StoriesProverbsQuestionsReward
5 “And when you pray, do not be like the
hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the
synagogues and on the street corners to be seen
by men. I tell you the truth, they have received
their reward in full. StoriesProverbsQuestionsReward
6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and
pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then
your Father, who sees what is done in secret,
will reward you. StoriesProverbsQuestionsReward
Mark 10:29-31 (NIV) “I tell you the truth,”
Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or
mother or father or children or fields for
me and the gospel StoriesProverbsQuestionsReward
30 will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—
and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”
