Subzilla invited to ’the show’
TC110310DB10BHAMILTON’S revered veteran and vintage car restorer and collector Wallace McNair drove his1924 V12 Sunbeam on the Top Gear Convoy.
TC110310DB10BSUBZILLA owner Ken Brough took his creation to Hamilton to check out the Top Gear Convoy— and later that night was part of ‘the show’.
When Top Gear Live hit thecountry last month, KenBrough had to at least check
out the convoy cars heading to Auck-land.The creator of Brough Xtreme
Vehicles (www.bxv.co.nz) took his lat-est creation, Subzilla, to see theHamilton stopover.Organisers recognised the
uniqueness of the vehicle and MrBrough was invited to join the display.Soon after the invitation came to jointhe convoy and be part of the Top GearLive entertainment.Convoy cars wereon show in Auckland before setting offon their last trek together to arrive atASB Showgrounds for the event.Star of the show, Jeremy Clarkson,
addressed the drivers and supportcrews and took time to check out thecars and meet people. As part of the overall entertainment
package outside the live show therewere displays, racing, shows and tradeareas.Mr Brough was able to drive the
local ‘Top Gear’ track — butunfortunately his section was classedas exhibition and weren’t timed. He says that didn’t stop him from
testing Subzilla and getting plenty ofsideways action.Mr Brough says he learn’t a lot more
about his car’s handling and perform-ance, even though the short, twistytrack didn’t give Subzilla a chance toreally stretch its legs. But he waspleased with the car and says theexperience was highly enjoyable. He especially enjoyed the camarad-
erie between the vehicle owners, andsays the tickets to this years show werea bonus.Mr Brough attended last year, and
says the new show had plenty of newfeatures to keep everyone happy andentertained.Since competing Subzilla to road
legal status about six months ago, MrBrough has clocked up about 5000kilometres, and apart from some finetuning, says she has been a dream todrive.

Toyota qualityunder pressureCompany believes cars sound
Toyota’s reputation for building top quality vehicles is comingunder pressure as some models are recalled.Toyota New Zealand has contacted all 260 owners of the
latest generation Prius to install an upgrade to the braking systemto eliminate a split second feel through the pedal. While Toyota has had no
comments from NewZealand cus-tomers,
some customers in the USA and Japan market had complained ofa split second delay in pedal response under slippery roadconditions when the ABS system activated.A software change will eliminate that delay and improve the
driving experience for Toyota customers. There does not seem to be any evidence the ‘fly by wire’ brakes
are dangerous. There has also been a recall of 61 Avensis Wagons for a sticky
accelerator.Toyota New Zealand head ofafter sales Paul Carrollsays the risk of any
ownerencounte-r ing aproblemis verysmal l ,as inthewhole of
Europe only 26 owners reported any problem and there were noaccidents resulting from the issue.Back in the United States there have been reports that around
100 customers complained of their Corolla steering suddenlyveering to one side.Mr Carroll said that there were no reports of such incidents in
New Zealand.Corollas sold in New Zealand are built in Japan, while those
sold in the United States are manufactured in North America.
Toyota Hybrid for the peopleBY DEAN TAYLOR
I’ve driven a few of the varioushybrid models now and I mustsay I think they are a good idea
and drive perfectly well.Toyota is committed to the
programme of Hybrid technology, and despite a dent to publicconfidence at present, seem to bewell down the track with new andbetter models.Best know is obviously the
Prius — a dedicated Hybrid — butnow comes the Camry with Hybridtechnology, yet retaining all theversatility of a family sedan. The power of two Toyota call it
— and it works really well.Firstly it doesn’t have the same
array of extra technology the top-of-the range Prius carries — butthat allows the pricing to stay inthe ball park of competitors in thesegment. And it runs the standard 110kW
2.4 litre engine, plus the electricengine which can throw in another30kW when needed.More importantly electric
engines produce torque almostimmediately, and the combinationis seamless. The system runs through a
continuously variable transmissionfor an economy rate of 6l/100km.That’s great for a full five
seater, with a reasonable boot andlots of features.Best feature on the trans-
mission is the ‘B’ setting. It givesthe car engine braking abilities, which is great for occasional extrabraking during normal driving or itproved really useful when left ondriving a windy road. For downhill driving it would
also be an advantage.Naturally when the car
decelerates or brakes the hybrid
captures the energy for later use. When the car stops, so does the
engine — saving fuel. All this good work just happens
while you drive normally, enjoyinga well balanced, good handling carwith lots of good features. The all important sound system
is excellent, and in the i-Tech thereis leather, enhanced entertain-
ment, rain sensing wipers andmore. But even the basic modelhas Bluetooth compatibility, all thesafety equipment and reverseparking sensors and reversecamera.Dash layout is excellent,
although rev counter limited to3000rpm, and with readings belowzero, is unusual.

Facelift for Captiva rangeBY DEAN TAYLOR
Holden has made SUVbuying simpler withthe new Captiva five-
seater which has beenadded to the facelift rangeavailable from RosetownHolden.Captiva 5 offers more
flexibility to for motoristslooking to buy in the com-pact SUV range. And so as not to be
confused about seatingoptions in the rest of therange, that is the Captiva 7.Holden believe the
Captiva 5’s Europeanstyling, great specificationsand competitive price makeit an appealing offer. And with prices starting
in the lower end of the $30Krange for 2WD and headingtowards $39K for 4WD theycould be right. The ‘5’ is available as a
2WD with manual trans-mission or an AWD withautomatic transmission.Standard features
include:• Driver and frontpassenger airbags• Side curtain airbags• Electronic StabilityControl• Traction Control• 17’’ alloy wheels• Air conditioning• 6 Disc CD audio system
• Cloth seat trim• Leather wrap steeringwheel• Cruise control• Front and Rear Park Assist• Satin silver roof rails• Chrome exhaust tipThe 2.4 litre, four cylinder
engine (below left) makes103kW of power and 220Nmof torque. It’s not earth-shattering
performance, but it iseconomical. drives well andallows Holden to price the ‘5’
for the market.For more performance,
the ‘7’ offers the choice ofeither a 3.2 litre petrol V6 or2.0 litre common rail turbodiesel. The petrol V6 comes with
five speed auto and is AWD,delivering 169kW of powerand 297Nm of torque. The diesel makes plenty
of torque (320Nm) and110kW of power and runs theauto in AWD or choice of theauto or five speed manual in
2WD.Economy is good across
the range, and can bedescribed as exceptional at7.2l/100km in the manual2WD.The Captiva 5 has an
impressive array of safetyfeatures and plenty of stor-age options.Accessories include roof
mounted bike carrier or skicarrier, or the roof storagepod, and the 31 litre carfridge.

Classics welcome at showT
he annual Waikato TriumphCar Club’s Classic Car Showand Swap Meet returns to
Waipa Racecourse on Sunday, April11.Organisers moved the event
from Hamilton to Te Awamutu someyears ago and have enjoyed thelocal hospitality ever since.Originally a British and Euro-
pean show, the event nowwelcomes all veteran, vintage andclassic cars for a one day displayand competition in a highly relaxedenvironment. The swap meet was
also added some yearsago to build a new dimen-sion to the event.Gates open at 7.30am for
vehicles and stallholders, but organisers say thebest public times arebetween 9am untilabout 2pm when all thevehicles are in place.Organisers are
also mindful of keep-ing entry costs down,
so it is just $5 to get in and moneyraised go to a good cause — theWestpac Waikato Air Ambulance.Last year the club was able to
make a donation of $2000, a record, and they are hoping to better it in2010.This year organisers will be
utilising a new layout — hoping toget more vehicles into a tighterconfinement.Vehicles are lined up as they
arrive, but any groups or clubswishing to display their vehiclestogether can be catered for if theygive prior warning and arrive ingood time. There will be hot and cold food
and beverages available on siteand an added display this yearwill be stationary engines, which will be fired up atintervals.
Judges will chosewinners in a numberof categories, and thepublic will also get achance to chose theirfavourite vehicle.

of rally car currently comprisesproduction-based cars with non-turbocharged two-litre engines. Fordand Skoda are the two manufacturerswith the most S2000 vehicles con-firmed for the 2010 season to date. There are two competitions for
S2000 entrants, explains Paul Mal-lard, general manager of Rally NewZealand.‘‘The Super 2000 World Rally
Championship (S-WRC) is a competi-tion for drivers and the WRC Cup is acompetition for teams running S2000cars,’’ says Mallard.‘‘Currently six teams have con-
firmed entries for the WRC Cup, withfour of the teams selecting Rally NewZealand as one of their seven eventsin 2010.’’The international teams con-
firmed for Rally New Zealand are:• The Czech Ford National Teambrings Martin Prokop, the reigningFIA Junior World Rally Champion, toNew Zealand in another Ford FiestaS2000. Prokop’s move to the S-WRCis regarded by European rally com-mentators as one of the biggestnames to make the switch to the newcategory. Prokop contested Rally NewZealand in 2008, taking a tight-foughtP-WRC class win.• Swedish driver Patrik Sandell andthe Red Bull Rally Team are bringing anew Skoda Fabia S2000 to Rally NewZealand. Sandell drove this model ofcar to victory on the opening twoP-WRC rounds in 2009 (when theS2000 cars were allowed to run in thesame class as P-WRC cars). Like2009, Sandell’s car will be run byAustrian motorsport company BRRunder the Red Bull banner. Driving aGroup N Mitsubishi, Sandell camesecond in the P-WRC category in RallyNew Zealand in 2008.
• Barwa World Rally Team, which willrun a Ford Fiesta S2000 for Qatardriver Nassar Al Attiyah, the 2006Production World Rally Championand six-time Middle East Rally Cham-pion. Al Attiyah was one of the starsof the 2009 P-WRC season, drivinghis Subaru Impreza to class wins inArgentina and Italy. He will beaccompanied to New Zealand in 2010by his regular co-driver ItalianGiovanni Bernacchini.• The JanPro team from Finland hasentered another Ford Fiesta S2000for former official Skoda driver JanneTuohino. Having contested 40 WRCevents in several different WRC carsover seven seasons, the doubleFinnish rally champion will be back in2010 with his privately-run team andco-driver Markku Tuohino. The S-WRC for drivers currently
has eight drivers entered — thoselisted above and the following driverswho are not planning to come to NewZealand:
• Last year’s J-WRC runner-up MichalKosciuszko with the Dynamic WorldRally Team in a Ford Fiesta S2000;• Former P-WRC driver EyvindBrynildsen and Skoda Rene GeorgesRally Sport will campaign a SkodaFabia S2000;• Portugal’s Bernardo Sousa is driv-ing a Ford Fiesta S2000 prepared byM-Sport;• And former WRC manufacturerteam driver Xevi Pons is alsocontesting the S2000 Ford.Marc de Jong, responsible for the
commercial development of WRCsupport championships through thechampionship promoter North OneSport, says the take up for this year’sinaugural S-WRC competition was‘fantastic’.‘‘The S-WRC has a very strong
appeal because it is the champion-ship of the future,’’ says de Jong.‘‘These are the cars that are going todominate the WRC of 2011, becauseS-WRC cars form the basis of the next
generation of World Rally Cars.’’De Jong believes the number of
entries could increase to 12 by thefinal cut-off date of April 9.‘‘I’m aware of about four others
who are close to signing up andconfirming. If all goes to plan, I expectwe will have between 10 and 12entries. In the first year of a cham-pionship like this that is a fantasticnumber.’’Skoda and Ford are the only two
manufacturers represented in theentries so far, but de Jong isexpecting entries from other marquesto follow.‘‘I know that Peugeot, Abarth,
Proton and MG drivers are amongthose looking to get into the cham-pionship.’’WRC regulations state that no
new Super 2000 cars may behomologated after the end of 2010with a normally aspirated two-litreengine. In future, they must be fittedwith 1.6 litre turbocharged engine.

GAS offers Big Adventure for teenagersP
etrol retailer Gasoline Alley is giving 30New Zealand teens the adventure of alifetime by sending them on a Spirit of New
Zealand voyage.Throughout April, GAS entrepreneur Phil
Murray will be taking a road trip around thecountry in his iconic Holden ute, handing outfreebies, putting on good old Kiwi sausagesizzles at GAS stations and presenting the prizesto the lucky recipient from each town.To win, teenagers aged 15-18 will write a
300-word essay entitled ‘‘One big idea that willmake our community a better place to live in,’’and the best essays will be selected by region, ensuring that teens from all over New Zealand
will benefit — not just those from the country’smain centres.‘‘I’m really looking forward to my road trip,
visiting all the towns around the country andgiving Kiwi teens this chance,’’ says Mr Murray.‘‘I’ve always wanted to build stronger local
communities and it will be great to get amongstit and see first-hand the impact this competitionhas.’’Phil’s Big Kiwi Adventure is an example of
family-owned company GAS demonstrating itscommitment to heartland New Zealand. The business was developed by re-opening
petrol station sites in rural communities thatcorporate oil companies had pulled out of due to
lack of profitability.GAS’ motto is ‘‘service the way it used to be’’
and they provide a full forecourt service at over120 sites around the country. The owners of the stations are actively
involved in the community, profits are spentlocally, and this collaboration with the Spirit ofAdventure Trust is the next natural progressionfor the company’s continued backing of itsheartland New Zealand customers. The competition closes March 31, with the
winners being announced from April 12.Entry forms are available from GAS stations,
