Mighty little MateriaBy Dean Taylor

Daihatsu are prob-ably best known for making small,

reliable vehicles - and the Materia is no exception.

So Daihatsu like to have strange names for their vehi-cles, but seem to know how to make a good little car.

And they have recently expanded the choices of engine sizes, so there are 1.0 litre, 1.3 litre and 1.5 litre engines across the Sirion range and 1.5 litre Materia and Terios models.

I picked up my black wagon from Waikato Toyota and thought it wasn’t bad looking despite being a bit of a brick.

But that shape allows a fair bit of room in a small package - so it came with a 1500cc twin cam engine, reasonable front and rear seat arrangement and some rear hatch space.

I had just been thinking that although the symmetric dash was quite a neat de-sign, the central panel for

dials was a bit out there when I pulled up behind a classic Mini. And guess where their dials are?

My fi ve speed Materia was good in town and fi ne on the open road. Little wheels and a high shape aren’t the best cruising design, but the engine was certainly willing.

It develops 76kW of power and 138Nm of torque and is tested to give fuel economy of 7.2 litres per 100km.

There was plenty of room for me, and it had a fairly impressive sound system, including dash mounted tweeters for front compo-nent speakers, air condi-

tioning, reasonable safety features and good interior storage.

Backed by the Toyota dealer network, the Daihat-su comes with a standard three year/100,000km warranty with options to upgrade and include service plans.

PIT CREW: Sam Cosgrove preparing Jason Richards car #3 for Race 3 of the Hamilton 400.

REAL WORLD: Sam Cosgrove under a client’s car at Waikato Toyota Te Awamutu.

When mechanic Sam Cos-grove got a call from someone saying they

were Greg Murphy and would he like to be in the Tasman Motorsport pit crew for the Hamilton 400 he thought they were pulling his leg.

However, the phone call was for real - the fi rst sam had heard about the MTA scheme to involve an up-and-coming mechanic from an MTA workshop in the event.

Sam has served his time at Waikato Toyota Te Awamutu - following in the career footsteps of his father Mike who previously owned Tyre and Tune.

The 21-year-old was rapt to ac-cept the invitation - he is a huge mo-torsport fan and especially loves the Australasian V8 Supercar series.

And although he has owned a few

classic cars in his time, mostly Fords, he was happy to be asked to work on the Holden team.

Waikato Toyota Hamilton offi ce had recommended Sam for the MTA promotion and he joined Tasman Motorsport on the Thursday before race weekend.

He says it was hugely exciting to be so close to the action.

Sam helped prepare both Greg Murphy and Jason Richards’ cars for the event and help in the pit work-shop between races.

During the races it was left to the pros, but he did get a close up look at the pit lane action and was amazed at how exciting and hectic it was.

He says motorsport work has to be fast and accurate, and he enjoys working under that sort of expecta-tion.

And he adds that everyone on the team is great, so it was fun as well.

OFF TO JOIN TEAMAs a result of the Hamilton 400 sam

received a call from Tasman Motorsport offering him a position on the team.

Sam didn’t take too long to accept - amazed that last year he paid to go to the famous Bathurst round of the event and this year he will get paid to

be there. He says while many young Kiwis have

dreams of being an All Black, or driving Formula 1, his has always been to be part of a motorsport team doing what he loves - working on cars.

He leaves for the Melbourne based team in time for round six.

Sam says leaving his family is hard, but he was born in Perth and has a sister and her husband living in Sydney, so he

won’t feel too far from his roots. And he says there are a lot of Kiwis

in the team, so it will be a great experi-ence.

Sam says his job will be to prepare cars between rounds and be part of the pit crew at events.

He says motorsport is a large indus-try and getting into a successful V8 Su-percar team will open plenty of doors for him for new direction in his career.

Will new emission rules help?By Dean Taylor

Changes to emission rules for imported cars come into force soon - but may not have the desired result of improving

air quality. All New Zealand cars are imported one way

or another - we have no manufacturing in this country so our new cars are built at source and used Japanese imports especially form a huge part of our market.

It is fair to say quite a bit of my argument has been made by used vehicle importers - so they have a vested interest and do not hide the fact.

But here in Te Awamutu for example, our importers are highly experienced in the automo-tive industry and have the benefi t of fi rst hand knowledge from past actions.

The fi rst argument is that legislating vehicles

have to meet a higher emission standard means the vehicles will have to be newer, therefore they will be more expensive.

Some say it is worth the price to have a cleaner vehicle, but in many cases the difference is quite minor and the cost quite a lot more.

It also means in terms of many imports, which form a large part of the commercial fl eet, extra costs will be passed onto consumers, so we will all pay.

Secondly, the extra costs will compel some owners to hang onto the older vehicles for longer before replacing them - so the aim of modernis-ing the New Zealand fl eet may actually take a backward step for economic reasons.

And the point has also been made that in terms of worldwide use of resources, New Zea-land buying perfectly good used cars from the

wealthier and stronger Japanese economy is a good use of resources.

The alternative is destruction - Japan can afford to be a throw-away economy so if the vehicle is not driven then resources and energy are used to destroy it.

Admittedly some parts are recyclable, but many become landfi ll or waste.

Natural attrition of the current fl eet, coupled with reasonable replacement costs, should en-sure the New Zealand fl eet does improve over a reasonably short period of time.

If the Government wants New Zealand to emit less dangerous gases into the atmosphere, they could do so by inspiring Kiwis to simply drive less and use more effi cient public trans-port or give incentives to people to buy proven greener vehicles.

AA calls for price inquiryApril was a rough month for motorists with fuel

prices increasing on a weekly basis throughout towards the dreaded $2 per litre mark and diesel

hiking by up to 27c per litre.According to AA PetrolWatch, diesel prices have more

than doubled in the last twelve months, rising 59 cents, compared to a 25% increase in petrol prices.

“The increase in the cost of fuel refl ects the continuing trend of rising international oil and refi ned fuel prices – the reasons for these rises are unclear,” says ays Mike Noon, AA Motoring Affairs General Manager.

“There has been no reduction in refi ning capacity, as hap-pened as a result of Hurricane Katrina, nor any major geo-political crisis to explain the rising prices. Commentators are now saying the increases are mostly due to speculators in-vesting in commodity markets, and a softening US dollar.”

“Motorists have been hit hard by the record fuel prices and are increasingly distrustful of oil companies which con-tinue to announce international record profi ts at levels beyond comprehension. For that reason the AA has called on the Government to establish an independent inquiry into fuel pricing in the New Zealand market. We want to be sure that motorists aren’t being overcharged and that price decreases are being passed on at the pump quickly and whenever there is the opportunity. We think the oil companies have done a pretty poor job of explaining their price changes and the Ministry of Economic Development could improve the frequency and quality of its monitoring,” says Mr Noon.

“An inquiry into the pricing structure of the New Zea-land fuels market should identify whether the oil company margins are fair and reasonable, and provide a comparison with similar markets like Australia. New Zealand motorists have a suspicion that Australians are getting a better deal on prices, let’s fi nd out if this is true.”

The AA also recently called for the GST component on petrol excise to be removed, a move that would reduce prices by 5.6 cents per litre.

Mr Noon says “it’s a tax on a tax, and with the Govern-ment collecting more GST every time there is a price in-crease we believe it should remove this inequity as a gesture to New Zealand motorists. It is the fair thing to do.”

According to AA PetrolWatch, the GST take on all fuel sales was over 1 billon dollars in 2007.

New rules drastically change import optionsBy Dean Taylor

New Government legislation aimed to reduce pollution by regulating vehicle exhaust emis-sions will drastically change the choices vehicle

buyers currently enjoy.I drove a 1997 three litre turbo intercooled diesel

Toyota Prado going for under $24,000 from TASS - a vehicle that won’t be available under new legislation.

A comparable, but newer import, that meets the new requirements would be considerable more expansive.

The Prado is one of the popular 4WD models avail-able in New Zealand, and for your money you get a lot of vehicle.

It suits families, with its fi ve to seven seat arrangement, workers with its storage and towing ability, farmers with its off-road ability, and boaties because you can avoid embarrassing moments on the ramp.

This model was very well appointed, although it is a shame some of the entertainment features available have to be modifi ed or replaced.

I tried to fi nd a local TV station I could watch to no avail, and while it was fun to turn on the SatNav I had no idea where I was going because it was set for Japan.

The best I could fi nd was that the engine develops about 120kW of power and 350Nm of torque - it certainly goes well and drives as good as can be expected from a 4WD on the road.

An owner can expect to use about 10 litres of diesel every 100km, not bad for the size and versatility of such a machine.
