MTA supports childrestraint age changeT

he Motor Trade Association supports thenew rule to raise the age limit for themandatory use of child car restraints to

seven years of age.MTA spokesperson, Ana Zandi, says that

this is a positive step in the right direction inhelping to reduce the number of youngchildren that are at unnecessary risk of beinginvolved in a car crash.‘‘Research shows that an adult seatbelt is

not enough to protect young children if theyhave been involved in a serious car crash.Adult seatbelts are designed for adult bodiesnot for young children who are safer in a childrestraint or booster seat until they are 148cmtall.’’‘‘We continue to have one of the highest

child road fatality rates in the OECD. Researchalso shows that vehicles are the number onekiller of our children, with around one in fivechild fatalities.’’In the 2010 calendar year, 304 children

aged five to nine years were either injured orkilled in road crashes.‘‘There is no doubt that properly used child

restraints and safety belts significantly reducethe risk of serious injuries and fatalities in avehicle crash. This new rule will certainly go along way towards helping to bring thesenumbers down and keep our children safe onthe roads,’’ says Ms Zandi.Under current New Zealand law, any child

under five years of age must be properlyrestrained by an approved child restraint.Under the new rule, children up to the age ofseven must be in an appropriate childrestraint, and those between seven and eightyears of age will be required to use a childrestraint, if one is available. As well as having the appropriate child

restraints, it’s also important to ensure thatthey are properly fitted. This means that thecar seat is fitted correctly to a vehicle and thatthe car seat also fits with a child’s physicalneeds.Parents should ensure that they have their

children’s car seats installed and checked by atrained professional — most MTA members

can do this at no cost. They will check to makesure the car seat has the right kind of fittings, that it’s actually fitted to the right part of thevehicle, and that fastenings are tightened tothe correct torque settings.‘‘This change will not only bring us in line

with other countries such as Australia but itwill also go a long way towards reducing theroad toll amongst our young children,’’ addedMs Zandi.

Holden’s class leading workhorse

BY DEAN TAYLOR

Only a HoldenColorado cantrailer a Holden

Colorado — not that therewould be any need to.The new Holden ute is

big and built for work.I drove the LTZ 2x4

Crew Cab Automatic fromRosetown Holden, all uteon the outside but car likeon the inside. In this version the four

cylinder common rail 2.8litre diesel engine devel-ops 132kW of power and470Nm of torque. So with plenty of power

on tap, the Colorado alsohas class leading towing, which is a big deal. The 2.8l versions can

haul up to 3500kg and, importantly, take 350kgon the towball. With that sort of cap-

acity there’s no need toleave anything at home, whether its for work orplay. The Colorado has a

‘don’t-mess-with-me’ atti-tude and is physicallyimpressive.A global team worked

on the design and came upwith a great looker — butthe team at Holden Aus-tralia had a big say in thesuspension for ‘downunder’ and the resultworks.A mixture of independ-

ent double wishbones upfront and leaf springs atthe back end does thebusiness on and off-road.

But while it can do thehard yards, inside theColorado reflects the trendof making these vehiclesas user-friendly and up todate as it can be.I t comes with

Bluetooth connection, twoauxiliary power outlets, auxiliary input, USB portand iPod compatible audio

system.The long list of safety

equipment including elec-tronic stability control(ESC), ABS, electronicbrakeforce distribution(EBD), traction control(TCS), driver and frontpassenger airbags plusside curtain airbags.Power windows and

mirrors, height adjustingsteering wheel, audio sys-tem with CD player, clim-ate controlled air con-ditioning, and a mass ofstorage compartments inthe cabin round things out.It might have a no-

nonsense approach towork, but its a sophistic-ated beast that won’t shirk

the task at hand. The new Colorado

comes in three bodyspecifications, with a base2.5 litre engine also avail-able, and choice of manualand automatictransmissions. In all there are 15

variants - each designedfor the job at hand.

AA memberssupportingannual WoFThemajority of AA members support the idea of anannual Warrant of Fitness for vehicles up to 12years of age, a survey has found. The survey asked a random sample of AA members

a range of questions relating to the vehicle licensingreform proposals currently being considered by theGovernment. The results of the questions relating to how often

members thought WoF tests should be conductedfound most people supported changing the currentregime of six-monthly inspections for vehicles aged sixand above. When asked what they thought about all cars only

requiring an annual WoF, 71 percent of AA memberssupported the idea, 22 percent opposed it and 7percent had no feeling either way. When asked about the option of an annual WoF for

vehicles up to 12 years of age, and then six-monthly forvehicles older than that, the results remained similarwith 70 percent in favour, 20 percent against and 10percent with no feeling either way. However, when asked how often vehicles over 12

years old should be tested, only 33 per cent of AAmembers supported an annual inspection for vehiclesaged between 12 and 18 years, and 19 per centsupported an annual check for vehicles over 18 years. The majority preferred the status quo of a six-monthlyinspection for vehicles in these age brackets.‘‘This is a really important issue for motorists so we

asked several questions about changing the WoFfrequency, before and after stating the possible prosand cons,’’ says AA spokesperson Mark Stockdale.‘‘The support levels stayed the same every time,

with about 70 percent supporting the idea of cars up to12 years old only requiring a WoF once a year.’’‘‘Many countries around the world have annual or

bi-annual safety inspections and our members haveindicated they are in favour of New Zealand followingsuit.’’The AA will take the views of its members into

account when preparing its submission on theproposals, as well as ensuring that any changes do notadversely affect road safety.

IMPOSTER? Maybe not. BMC built the Metropolitan for Nash andHudson (later AMC) from 1953 — 1961, initially just for North America, but later for the UK and other markets. This is an oh-so-cute 1958 NashMetropolitan Series III which uses the BMC 1500cc B Series engine.

LITTLE BRITAIN: Collection of small Brits from MG, Mini and Morris.

TC111012DB04D

(BELOW) 1956 Morris Isis was quite the talking point. Depending on who istelling the story, there are just three or four models left on the road in NewZealand. It was based on a lengthened Oxford, with the BMC C series 2.6 litrestraight six engine also used by the Wolsley 6/90, Austin WestminsterA90/A95/A105, Riley Two-Point-Six and Austin Healey 100-6. According to thelicence label this is a Series I, although 1956 was the crossover year and thedistinctive grille looks like a Series II. The Morris Isis name was first used from1929 to 1935 for a 2.5 litre straight six powered version of the JA. It had anAmerican inspired design and even shared some panel work with Dodge.

Tairua’s Brits at the Beach took placelast weekend — highlight for DriveBythe collection of vintage, classic and

new British machinery on show.On the roads, and on display, were

everything from a 20’s Rolls Royce to annew Aston Martin DB9, and most inbetween. The iconic Mark II Jaguar was in short

supply — but not the BMC’s — Minis,Morries, Austin Healeys and MGs were wellrepresented. Many had the obligatory personalised

plate — OH MG was our favourite.Union Flags were everywhere and many

participants were in the full regalia — fromroyalty to faux royalty in the formof Pearly Queens andKings.

Styly Fiesta supermini

BY DEAN TAYLOR

Ford’s upgraded supermini— the Fiesta — hasalways represented great

value for money, and now itseven better.I drove the Fiesta Zetec

automatic from FairviewMotors which is available atjust 3 percent interest toapproved buyers. It has a 1.6-litre powerplant

partnered by a six speedPowershift transmission. The energetic 1596cc

Duratec Ti-VCT fuel-injectedengine develops 89kW at6300rpm and has 151Nm oftorque available at 4300rpm,giving it performance at thetop end of the mainstreamsupermini segment, and withthe great transmission (anefficient double clutch systemsupplied by Getrag and essen-tially the same as the DSGtransmissions used inVolkswagens) it is as good onthe open road as it is aroundtown. It also offers standard

Bluetooth phone connectivityalong with USB and auxiliaryconnectivity for portablemedia players and voice con-trol functions. The Zetec is the upper level

of the Fiesta lineup, and hasalloy wheels and a smartbodykit to provide a sportsflavour.Official fuel consumption is

rated at 6.1 litres per 100km—for both manual and automaticFiestas. What sets the Fiesta apart

from the supermini competi-tion is its fun-to-drive hand-ling. It’s the clear choice of‘driver’s car’ among affordablemainstream small cars withthe same sort of rewardingdynamics and chassis tuningas bigger Euro Fords such asthe Focus and Mondeo.A so-called sports suspen-

sion is now part of the Zetecspecification and the 195/50R16 tyre choice gives it a

responsive and confidentstance on the road. The dash layout is quite

busy with small instruments ina pod-like cluster and anergonomic layout that puts thefocus on the phone and audiocontrols which are all locatedup high and in easy reachwhile the dial type controls forthe heating and ventilation arelow down on the centre stack. The Zetec has a part

leather steering wheel withaudio and cruise control but-tons and sets out to convinceof its sporting flavour withplenty of mock metallic sur-faces.There are big front door

bins an average size gloveboxand the addition of a ‘‘shoe’’compartment under the frontpassenger seat is another ofthe new features of the 2011Fiesta specification.
