Introduction
1.1. Generalities
The TC4N card reader (firmware V4.0 and above) supports the new CANON serial protocol
for self service vending of copier and the printer images on CANON multifunctionals (MFP).
A CANON serial interface, called Kit-G1 or Kit-K1, has to be ordered from CANON. See the
table « Models accepted » for the Canon Serial Kit part number according to the MFP model
number.
An XCOJL255 cable has to be ordered from Advanced Technologies to connect the TC4N to
the CANON Serial Kit.
The main advantages of using this serial interface over the traditional « key counter
interface » are:
• Self service vending of both copy and print images
• Intelligent calculation of the whole job price based on the B&W price, colour price
and paper size prices
• Prices for jobs involving a mix of B&W and color pages are charged for on a page by
page basis

Page 4/11
• The basic features of the MFP are not inhibited by the serial interface, namely,
o Print and copy speeds are the same as in free mode,
o An automatic document feeder (ADF) may be used,
o Automatic color detection may be used, and
o Duplex copying may be used.
• Networked print jobs must be secured with a code, using the print driver provided.
The CANON MFP will ask for this code at the time the document is to be printed.
Documents sent without secured code will be discarded by the MFP.
• One or two modes of payment are available according to the CANON MFP model:
o Legacy MFP models:
Either the Supermarket Mode (copy vending only but very user friendly
interface), or the Multifunction Mode (copy and print vending)
o Newer MFP models (specifically the Adv models):
Only the Multifunction Mode is available
• The CANON serial interface is quite innovative, as the control panel of the machine is
always enabled (operational), which is usually not the case with other vending
solutions. Thus the control panel allows 1) the scan process of a copy job to start, and
2) the selection of a print job to be made. Before a specific copy or print job starts,
the CANON MFP asks the attached TC4N card reader for payment.
• In Multifunction Mode, prices are set in the MFP itself. In the Supermarket Mode,
prices are set in the TC4N.
Please note:
• The CANON serial interface does not allow the scan, fax or « print from
USB » functions of the MFP to be used.
• The MFP cannot be set for free printings and payable copies at the same time. Copies
and printing are always payable.
• The TC4N must have firmware V4.0 or above.

Connection
2.1. Mounting XCOJL255 cable in the Cartadis TC4N
The TC4N card reader is connected to the serial interface of the CANON MFP by using the
XCOJL255 cable. This cable replaces the default XCOJL230 cable. The installation procedure is
carried out in two steps:
1. Remove of the XCOJL230 cable (if needed).
2. Install of the XCOJL255 cable.
As needed, use a cutting tool to remove the square protective cap on the
rear side of the card reader.

2.1. Installation of the CANON serial kit
Follow the installation instructions supplied with your CANON G1 or K1 kit. Once the CANON
kit has been installed, connect the female Sub-D 9 pin connector of the XCOJL255 cable to
the male Sub-D 9 pin connector of the CANON Kit. Firmly lock the the two Sub-D connectors
together, using the hand screws provided.

Setting
3.1. CANON multifunction setting
The CANON serial interface is turned on from the CANON service menus “Service Mode Level
1” or “Service Mode Level 2” by setting the following parameters:
SERVICE MODE LEVEL 1: COPIER OPTION ACC COIN = 1 or 4
(1 – supermarket mode)
(4 – multifunction mode)
(the value COIN = 0 reverts multifunction to the free mode)
SERVICE MODE LEVEL 2: COPIER OPTION ACC UNIT-PRC = 4
(4 – displays the amount to pay in USD)
(5 – displays the amount in unit)
Useful in supermarket mode only:
SERVICE MODE LEVEL 1: COPIER OPTION BODY MODEL-SZ = 0
(0 – Display of the European paper sizes in the user’s interface).
SERVICE MODE LEVEL 1: COPIER OPTION ACC CARD-SW = 1
(0 – coin insertion)
(1 – card insertion)

SERVICE MODE LEVEL 1: COPIER OPTION ACC MIN-PRC = 1
(the minimum value of the smallest price in cents)
SERVICE MODE LEVEL 1: COPIER OPTION ACC MAX-PRC = 9999
(the maximum value of the highest price in cents)
SERVICE MODE LEVEL 1: COPIER OPTION USER B4-L-CNT = 0
(0 in case the B4 paper size is counted as an A4, 1 in case the B4 paper size is counted as an
A3)
SERVICE MODE LEVEL 2: COPIER OPTION USER 2C-CT-SW = 1
(0 when pages in 2 colors are counted as B&W, 1 when pages in 2 colors are counted as full
color). Two color means black plus one additional color.
Note: In case the TC4N is disconnected, the CANON MFP displays the error E719-0021. Such
an error code can be erased from the menu by performing this setting:
SERVICE MODE LEVEL 1: COPIER FUNCTION CLEAR ERR

Price setting
4.1. Supermarket mode
Should your CANON MFP be operating in the Supermarket Mode (COIN=1), sales prices
have to be set in TC4N. Refer to the TC4N User Manual supplied. Price 1 of TC4N
corresponds to a letter (or letter plus legal) sized B&W copy, price 2 corresponds to a ledger
(or legal plus ledger) sized B&W copy, price 3 corresponds to a letter (or letter plus legal)
sized color copy, and price 4 corresponds to a ledger (or legal plus ledger) sized color copy.
4.2. Multifunction mode
Should your CANON MFP be operating in the Multifunction Mode (COIN=4), sales prices
have to be set in the MFP (not in the TC4N).
Follow this sequence of menu steps on the CANON MFP to set copy or print type prices:
System Management Mode
 System Settings
Charge Management Settings (page4/4)
Unit Price Settings
