In many nations across the world, including Malaysia, universities are viewed as EDUCATIONAL and - in some cases RESEARCH institutions that should enjoy relative autonomy in the way they accomplish their missions. One of the biggest challenges faced by these institutions of higher education is the prioritisation and management of research within their own academic setting. Specifically, building and maintaining a culture of research excellence without undermining their original mission of developing a skilled workforce which meets the needs of the society. It is widely acknowledged that a university has to generate new knowledge, be it fundamental or applied, to be considered a worthy institution of higher learning. Knowledge is NOT static and thus to be a leading institution, a university has to be at the forefront of its selected discipline(s) or in other words, carve out its own niche.

Similarly, to be a recognised scholar, one needs to be intellectually knowledgeable in ones own field. This requires the scholar to continuously expand and update ones knowledge. The mere regurgitation of information does not make a person an academic. The differentiator is the ability to understand, dissect and analyse sets of information

and then applying as well as disseminating it in an understandable manner. Research provides the platform for this endeavor.

Taylors University envisions being the leader amongst private higher education providers. We aim to be leaders in cutting-edge research. Additionally, we are committed to disciplinary excellence across the medical sciences; the mathematical, physical and life sciences; the social sciences; and the humanities and interdisciplinary research that will benefit society on a national and global scale. Research, therefore, must be an essential ingredient of the institution. To achieve this, the universitys academia needs to commit itself to this mission.

Over the last three years, Taylors University has started implementing policies and programs to acculturate research excellence. The early results indicate that we are moving in the right direction; however, the pace is still slow. Our competitors are moving rapidly, in fact, some at a faster rate, which means we need to move at a much faster rate merely to sustain our current status, let alone to move up the performance ladder. What is needed is a revolution in the way we strategise and focus our energies to achieve the universitys long-term goals in research excellence. Backed by a comprehensive understanding of our common mission, academics and the supporting departments at Taylors University can work together towards revolutionising the way we do business, i.e. our practices, culture and systems as we navigate the dynamic landscape of open knowledge that we are facing today.

    COVER STORY

TGS administers decisions of the university senate and school postgraduate committee on matters such as credit transfer, deferment of studies and admission. TGS also formulates and executes policies that apply to postgraduate programmes taking into consideration factors such as the nature of dual awards with partner universities, internal and external financial obligations, national and international quality benchmarks as well as ensuring alignment with the universitys quality statement and core values. However, the academic autonomy rests with the academic schools that provide academic content and curriculum delivery of the programmes.

In addition, TGS also offers short-term courses on research methodology and philosophy of science as well as seminars on scientific research practices for enrichment purposes (see accompanying Table 2). These courses and seminars are delivered by academic staff within the university or in collaboration with external academic members. TGS coordinates with career services, international student office, library and hostel services to ensure an awesome customer experience for all its postgraduate students. Besides services, TGS also has its own resource centre and lounge area for postgraduate students use. TGS also provides other necessary support in the recruitment of students through tutorship, fellowship, scholarships and bursaries. In addition, a postgraduate apprentice programme that supports tutors and fellows in their development towards an academic career is also conducted by TGS.

The Dean of TGS, Dr Lim Chia Sien, highlights that TGS plays an important role in supporting the research agenda of the university by providing these academic services for postgraduate education. Starting with a modest staff of 3 in 2009, the school has grown from strength to strength and now has 12 staff. The school has three units, namely, consulting and marketing unit, taught programme unit and research programme unit. The number of postgraduate enrolment and graduation has also steadily increased over the years underlying the growing importance of postgraduate education at Taylors (see accompanying Table 3).

The quality and quantity of postgraduates is one of the criteria for various national and international university rankings including the Malaysia Research Assessment Instrument (MyRa), an annual audit conducted by Ministry of Higher Education that assesses the quality of Malaysian universities in order to rank their performance. Such measures are meant to assess the ability of universities in attracting and developing postgraduate talent.

Postgraduate education represents an invaluable investment for any country as this produces highly-skilled individuals to address national concerns and find viable solutions in a countrys progress towards a sustainably-developed future. Similarly, the research component in postgraduate education comprises a significant component of the overall research agenda and goals of any country.

In the changing landscape of higher education, in terms of supply and demand, quality and quantity as well as mobility patterns of students, Malaysia faces similar challenges as other countries in ensuring sufficient high-quality postgraduates that can meet the demands and needs of the countrys development. In the same way, in attempting to position itself as a choice destination for postgraduate education, Malaysia faces stiff competition from other premier study destinations like UK and US. In the recent QS University Ranking for Asia, only 5 Malaysian universities made it into the top 100 list and Taylors University, for the first time gained a placing in the top 250.

The road ahead for Taylors University is indeed challenging as it endeavors to establish itself as a research-led teaching university since achieving its university status five years ago. It is TGS long-term goal to continue building up TUs postgraduate education to a world-class standard in line with TUs mission as the top employers top choice university.

  • MALAYSIAN FOOD BAROMETER (MFB)

The Malaysian Food Barometer (MFB) is a nationwide reiterative survey that investigates the eating practices and cultural representations of food in a multicultural context. MFB is an initiative of the Chair of Food Studies: Food, Cultures and Health, a joint chair between Taylors University and Toulouse Jean-Jaurs University. Over 2,000 people across the northern, central, southern and northern regions of Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah and Sarawak participated in the 2013 survey.

The findings of the survey show the correlation between the food lifestyle of individuals, social characteristics and body size status, or obesity. However, one of the most interesting finding that emerged is the importance of eating out amongst Malaysians. Almost 50% of the meals are actually eaten out or are produced outside of the home (takeaway). As the rate is probably one of the highest rates worldwide, it espouses an issue for diet management and highlights the individual responsibility in the development of non-communicable diseases and obesity. The Malaysian society is also considered as an interesting context to understand the role of social organization in eating decisions and its consequences for public health.

On 9 Sept 2014, the survey report was officially launched and presented to the Malaysian Ministry of Health at Taylors University. The project now aims to widen the current collaboration with other scientific and industrial partners to conduct a second survey of the MFB which would include a bigger representative sample. The next phase of the project also includes comparisons of the contemporary eating trends in Malaysia with worldwide food barometer data to bridge this field of social and natural sciences with public health concerns.

The Malaysian Iyers and Iyengars is a coffee table book that documents the customs, traditions and history of a minority group of Malaysian Indians: The Iyers. This group of Tamil Brahmins arrived in Malaysia from the end of the 19th Century to Malaysia to seek a better livelihood for their families. This pictorial book is organized into two parts: The first part documents the history and migration of the Iyers from various locales in India to Malaysia, formation of an association to keep the Vedic tradition alive and the networking attempts to keep the practices alive. The second part of the book documents the social, cultural and religious practices of the community.

The origins of the very earliest schools in Malaysia and Singapore are traced in this ground-breaking publication, which serves as a prequel to the companion book Mission Schools of Malaya (2011) by the same author. In this new, in-depth study, the origins of the Mission Schools are traced back to the 16th century Portuguese Mission inMalacca and then explained via the study of twelve landmark institutions, of both Portuguese and French origins, which formed the backbone of English-language education in Malaysia and Singapore for two centuries.Containing over two hundred images of major buildings that once set the tome for education throughout Southeast Asia, this book completes the architectural study of Malaysias Mission Schools that began with the Mission Schools of Malaya. This book pays special tribute to the incomparable legacy of the La Salle and Infant Jesus Institutes in Malaysia and Singapore. With the other Missions, they gave to our cities places of honour.
