Tata Steel Limited (formerly Tata Iron and Steel Company Limited (TISCO)) is an Indian multinational steel-making company headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, and a subsidiary of the Tata Group. It was the 11 th largest steel producing company in the world in 2013, with an annual crude steel capacity of 25.3 million tones, and the second largest private-sector steel company in India (measured by domestic production) with an annual capacity of 9.7 million tones after SAIL

Tata Steel has manufacturing operations in 26 countries, including Australia, China, India, the Netherlands, Singapore, Thailand and the United Kingdom, and employs around 80,500 people. Its largest plant is located in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. In 2007 Tata Steel acquired the UK-based steel maker Corus which was the largest international acquisition by an Indian company till that date. It was ranked 486th in the 2014 Fortune Global 500 ranking of the world's biggest corporations. It was the seventh most valuable Indian brand of 2013 as per Brand Finance.

Education

Tata Steel proactively supports learning and education with programmes that have benefited numerous communities in its areas of operation across the world.

In India, Tata Steel plays a significant role in educating communities, with special focus on rural and affirmative action groups. Offering financial assistance to meritorious students through a range of scholarship programmes is one of the most prominent roles of the Company in this direction. Some of these scholarship programmes include the Jyoti Fellowships for SC/ST communities, Parivar Scholarships for children of relocated families, Moodie Fellowship for meritorious tribal students and the JN Tata Endowment that advances ‘loan scholarships’.. Tata Steel India has also undertaken the ‘1,000 Schools Project’ in Odisha and aims to complete this vast educational infrastructure project in FY 14-15.

Tata Steel is a member the World Steel Association and a signatory of its Sustainability Charter. The Group believes that the shared vision of making steel a major foundation of a sustainable world can be achieved through resource efficiency and reduction of the environmental impact over the lifecycle of the products. The Company’s approach to the Environment Management is guided by Tata Code of Conduct, Tata Climate Change Policy, Tata Steel’s Vision, Tata Steel’s Sustainability Policy, Environmental Policy and the UN Global Compact Principles. 

Having already halved the amount of energy needed to make a tonne of steel over the last 40 years, Tata Steel has set itself a target of reducing CO2 emissions by a further 20% within the next decade.

Health

In India, Tata Steel offers preventive, promotive and curative healthcare services through two major sub-divisions in the Corporate Services division - Medical Services and CSR in and around company’s operational area in the states of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Odisha. The Company also patronizes various societies dedicated to providing curative healthcare services to the people of Jamshedpur and its surrounding areas. The Medical Services Division exclusively provides curative services through multi-specialty hospitals - Tata Main Hospital (TMH), Jamshedpur as well as hospitals located in all mining Several key healthcare and well-being projects undertaken include Project MANSI on maternal and new born survival, Project RISHTA on adolescent health, Project ROSHNI to provide nursing and midwifery training to tribal girls and Projects like SATHI, Kavach, BASE and Sneh Kendra on HIV/AIDS awareness and treatment.

SAIL

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is one of the largest state-owned steel making company based in New Delhi, India and one of the top steel makers in world. With an annual turnover of 49350 crore (US$8.1 billion) (FY 2012-13). It is a public sector undertaking which trades publicly in the market is largely owned by Government of India and acts like an operating company. Incorporated on 24 January 1973, SAIL has 101,878 employees (as on 31-Mar-2013). With an annual production of 13.5 million metric tons, SAIL is the 24th largest steel producer in the world. The company's current chairman is C.S. Verma.

SAIL operates and owns 5 integrated steel plants at Rourkela, Bhilai, Durgapur, Bokaro and Burnpur and 3 special steel plants at Salem, Durgapur and Bhadravathi. It also owns a Ferro Alloy plant at Chandrapur. SAIL is a public sector company, owned and operated by the Government of India. According to a recent survey, SAIL is one of India's fastest growing Public Sector Units

SAIL - Into the FutureModernizations & Expansion

SAIL, is in the process of modernizing and expanding its production units, raw material resources and other facilities to maintain its dominant position in the Indian steel market. The objective is to enhance the production capacity to 23.46 MTPA of Hot Metal from the installed production capacity of 13.8 MTPA.

A new unit coming up at ISP

Expansion of Salem Steel Plant has been completed in Sep’10 and the facilities are in regular operation.

In other Plants, most of the linked facilities have been completed and also the units in primary area like Raw Material Handling Systems, Coke Oven Batteries, Sinter Plants and a Country’s Largest Blast Furnace have been completed. One Continuous Casting Machine and Rolling Mill Unit has also been completed. Further Hot Trials in another Continuous Casting Machine have also started. The execution of rest of the Projects under Modernisation & Expansion Plan is being done with full momentum and is expected to be completed by 2014-15.

EducationSAIL has established about 146 schools in its steel townships to impart modern education to more than 69,000 children. Every year more than 200 students from SAIL-run schools are admitted into professional courses being offered by premier institutions of higher learning in the country such as IITs, IIMs, NITs, medical schools, etc. Many students from SAIL townships are among the top rankers in the entrance examinations of these institutes.Besides, the company provides assistance in the form of construction of additional rooms/boundary walls/toilets, provision of stationery/sports items, etc., to over 286 schools with around 14,000 students. Apart from its own schools, SAIL also supports other public schools, managed independently and opened primarily to support the growing demand for education. Consequently, in terms of completion of primary education (up to class 5), SAIL-managed schools have the distinction of having a survival rate of 93.12% and 90% in secondary education. The schools have maintained a girl: boy ratio of 1:1 for all levels of education. SAIL is now targeting to achieve 100% literacy in its townships.

Environment200 acres of degraded land has been restored through afforestation at Purnapani flux mines of SAIL in Orissa by planting saplings which includes horticulture species, forest species and a variety of grasses. Pisiculture has been done in the abandoned quarries at Purnapani and 300,000 fishlings have been released in the quarry waters. Further 30,000 saplings of 50 different species have been planted in this season and another 5 lakhs fishlings have been released in the quarry water.

Plantation of 10,000 saplings in 10 acres of degraded land has been planned. Out of that, plantation of 4,000 saplings has been completed at Barsua Iron Ore Mines. Medicinal plantation of amla was undertaken in Chhattisgarh region recently.

Medical and Health Care

Over the years, SAIL has established 54 primary health centre’s, 12 reproductive & child health (RCH) centre’s, 17 hospitals and 7 super-speciality hospitals to provide modern health care to more than 30.60 million people. The hospitals have a total strength of around 4043 beds for the benefit of employees and have 4000 trained medical staff.

SAIL has been implementing an AIDS awareness & control programme in partnership with the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare since 1999-2000. Till date about Rs 32 million have been received for implementing the policies of NACP-II in all plants/units. The company has covered around 6 lakh non-employees and 1 lakh employees in the programme. In 2003, the International Labor Organization documented SAIL’s HIV/AIDS programme as a case study for workplace intervention.

Drives on immunisation, blood donation, etc., are also held on a regular basis. The purpose of the health camps is also to bring about awareness on health-related issues by distributing water purification tablets, handbills and other means of audio-visual communication. Specialists in the medical fields of gynaecology, cardiology, paediatrics, ultrasound, orthopedics, and etc.In 2007-08, SAIL organised more than 475 medical camps in 12 states covering over 5 lakh needy people. More than 2,200 health camps were organized in 2008-09, benefitting around 10 lakh people and in 2009-10, more than 3850 camps have been organized, benefitting over 2.32 Lakh people.

The CSR activities that TATA group is following are very use full. Many people are getting benefit; this is really a very good thing.

SAIL:

Sail is in the process of modernizing and expanding its production units, raw material resources and other facilities to maintain its dominant position in the Indian steel market.

SAIL is trying to improve their position by their work. This company has set up their target and they are continuously trying to reach at their point.

SAIL has set the ball rolling for the company to work on Vision 2020 for the company. Keeping in line the estimated requirement of steel in the country and the potential SAIL has, action plan is underway for achieving 60 million tonnes production by 2020, which would be approximately 30% of the Indian Steel industry market share.
