The Functions of a Music Video

• Music Videos are used by artists to either promote themselves and their new albums in order to get money or they are created to help spread a message to the audience.

• The use of the music video is to sell the song and the artist to the audience so they will watch present and future videos. It also makes them more likely to stay loyal, buy future albums and go to concerts.

• If the video is performance-based, the video is made to promote the artist but if the video is about sending the message then the video will focus on the message more than the artist.

Time of Our Lives This video's visual pleasures include the video having a performance and narrative - illustrative side, telling a story and letting the audience enjoy the performance from both artists. The story is about a flat organizing a party to help pay the bills the day after New Years day. This makes the narrative relatable to people as they also struggle with bills.

There's other visual pleasures, such as showing singing and dancing from the people at the party as it's enjoyable to watch people at a rave and act like animals. The video pushes the boundaries when it comes to including alcohol in their video as it's seen a societal issue and may be seen as negative.

Despite wearing expensive clothing when singing in front of the camera, they're shown wearing working class clothes later on to show they're letting loose, acting like party animals and trying to have a good time while they have the chance.

Comparing the Functions of two VideosHozier's "Take me to Church" isn't performance based and the artist isn't seen in the video. It's focused on addressing how countries approach sexuality and how dangerous it can become when being different.

However, Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood" is performance based and has an entertaining illustrative narrative about betrayal and revenge which makes it enjoyable to watch and engages the audience, making them want to see how it ends.
