Task 5 evaluation of audience research results

From this chart, I am able to determine whether or not my protagonist should be male or female. I did initially want to go with a male protagonist but I think it is useful to build up an audiences’ opinion on the matter. This chart clearly shows that the male would play a better role as the protagonist, as expected, due to the male role fulfilling a more intimidating and more aggressive role as compared to a female role. I have to agree with the results of this chart, because not only does a male definitely fulfil these requirements, but also because in most popular horror film there is a male protagonist (SAW, Wolf Creek, When a Stranger Calls etc.) From these two charts I was able to establish what sorts of conventions of a film trailer made audiences more enticed to watch the film, as well as the typical conventions of a horror film, so that I was able to incorporate these ideas into my own. Firstly, from the first chart, I found that the plot of the trailer was the main aspect which would make them want to see the film itself. Joint second were ratings & reviews, and cliff-hanger conclusion, which was a popular suggestion from a number of participants. For my trailer, I am now aware that I will need to include a couple of ratings and reviews to imply that top critics have valued this film and will therefore entice the audience to want to watch my film. As well as this I will need to make sure to address the fact that my trailer could have a cliff-hanger conclusion to really put the audience on the edge. Lastly, the results that proved least popular although still important are the cast, From these last two charts here, I was able to determine the confirmed name choice of my film, as well as the location most appropriate for a horror. The first chart displays the results which tell me that the most popular name choice for my film will be ‘No Way Out’. This for me was a particularly good title to have as it fit my rough film concept well (two boys lost in a desolate area, stalked by a mysterious figure). This leads me onto the next chart which displays the results for the most appropriate location for a horror film, and the result that proved most popular was the forest, as expected. Again, I felt that this location would match my film concept extremely well as the forest provides a mysterious and creepy atmosphere, which would also be great for the boys to get lost in, as well as the mysterious attacker to conceal his identity.

I have to agree with the results of this chart, because not only does a male definitely fulfil these requirements, but also because in most popular horror film there is a male protagonist (SAW, Wolf Creek, When a Stranger Calls etc.)

From these two charts I was able to establish what sorts of conventions of a film trailer made audiences more enticed to watch the film, as well as the typical conventions of a horror film, so that I was able to incorporate these ideas into my own.

Lastly, the results that proved least popular although still important are the cast, tense music, and film makers/directors. For my trailer, I will therefore need to include some sort of backing track to support the clips and reinforce the genre. To reinforce the genre I shall also not include a proper soundtrack to accompany the scenes, more like a subtle drone of strings to build tension towards that cliff-hanger conclusion. I shall also include at the beginning of the trailer, to remain conventional to popular film trailers, the film makers which I am yet to decide.

From these last two charts here, I was able to determine the confirmed name choice of my film, as well as the location most appropriate for a horror.
