Page 2: Task 4

+ Based on the principles that have been introduced in lecture 4 of the Enterprise module and your responses to the previous tasks, evaluate the Strengths and Weaknesses of three practitioners or design agencies as objectively as you can. What opportunities for your own practice have revealed themselves to you as a result of this analysis and evaluation?

Do not use subjective language or make unfounded comments about other people’s businesses. It is essential that you make references to SWOT and evaluate its usefulness as an analysis or evaluation tool.

In responding to this task you will need to consider the following questions:Who am I competing against? What do they offer? What makes me better? What makes me different?

Standout are a creative agency who started of in Leicester and have know expanded with a second studio in London. They offer creative strategies in both online and offline thinking. Having been running for around 10 years the have a team of about 18 people.

They have an impressive client list having worked on a range of various projects and are continually expanding. They offer both print based design as well as web design and other online creative strategies. On the whole their client base is very commercial and mostly high end.

Having two studios - with one being In London it shows the success and growth of the business.

What makes me better // different? A lot of the work that Standout work on is very commercial something that I'm not so keen in, Id like to work with with smaller companies on a much smaller scale having a more personal relationship with the client and working on more arts and cultural based projects.

Having been to the D&AD north lecture from the guys at GBH, I have a clearer understanding of the type of work they do and the clients they work with.

They have a well established client list both in the UK as well as internationally (Puma, Mama shelter, Royal Mail, Virgin Galactic, Eurostar..) GBH offer a fresh approach to creative thinking with innovative design ideas which has allowed them to work a diverse client list.

They work not only with print based design but also moving image and film as well as working on interior projects with Philippe Starck for Eurostar.

What makes me better // different? Not a lot really...

Unlike Standout and GBH, Catherine Nippe is an independent designer working in London. She works in an impressive studio space which she shares with another designer. Having visited Catherine Nippe at her studio in London and seen her work it is great to see how well she has established herself as a designer and also worked to build a great client list.

Her work focuses mainly on editorial and publishing design but also focusing on branding and creating visual identities with a strong focus on typography.

What makes me better // different? Working in London can be very expensive and working as a independent designer with a lot of overheads can be quite difficult financially...
