Advertising Industry

It is used in this industry because the photography and images are the first thing that the viewer will see, and also the last thing which makes it more memorable. They use advertising images on billboards, in magazines, on posters and on flyers. This is to add description to what is being advertised and gives you a more visual idea instead of just reading lots of writing. If it is a company that is on the ‘leading edge’ then they may use special graphics and 3D images to express how they work, and show the viewer what they can expect in their level of work and ability.

Fashion Industry

Using photography in the fashion industry is key for models and magazines. They rely on shoots to capture structure and styles, and the final product being the photography, makes it worth it in the end as it’s very exciting. They have to build a team before any practical work takes place, they have to explore locations, and be aware of obstacles, such as lighting, weather and it’s always safe to have a plan B. Photographer Annie Leibovitz’ work involves portraits, fashion, music/band based, and she has worked with the likes of John Lennon, The Rolling Stones magazine and Miley Cyrus. She creates stories in her photography and I think that is what makes her work so good to look at.

Music Industry

Most of the time photography being used in the music industry is for commercial use. Media such as magazines, books and advertising will hire a photographer to work with specific artists and bands to produce work for stories and to promote their own talents within photography. Not all of it is commercial, some photographers have to build up portfolios to showcase what they can do and using music as an example reflects well on them as a person and shows that they work hard. Kevins Cummins is a perfect example of a music and portrait photographer. Looking through his work it’s clear to see that he loves working in black and white. I think the contrast between black, grey and white adds more depths to the images. He started his career in Salford where he studied photography, and moved on to working for Manchester theatres then gradually travelled all around the country as he was ‘in demand. He produces images for magazine covers and has won several awards. You can find his work displayed all over the country such the Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre or the National Portrait Gallery.

Sports Industry

Photography in the sports industry is so important. Your capturing a particular moment in a situation where it might or might not happen again like that. These images are then remembered for that time and correspond to feelings and actions of those who were there. A photographer that I looked at was Bill Frakes, who is a sport illustrated staff photographer. He’s worked across the USA and in more than 135 countries worldwide. His photography work is used worldwide too, on television networks and adverts is well known.

Photo journalism

Photo journalism is the collation, editing and presenting of news material for public broadcasting. A story is told in a string of images done by a photographer. It’s distinguished by its strict framework in which these people have to present their stories in their photography, this is what makes it unique to the photography industry..

Romano Cagnoni is a well known photo journalist and has produced a lot of work over the years. Looking at his work, you really see the reasons in why he captures these moments and are stories within themselves. What makes them more interesting is that they are all in black and white.
