2019 RALLIES PHIL DRAKE, 1ST VP

Hi all-

We have officially kicked off the 2019 rally season with

our just completed James Island Campground winter

rally in Charleston. The weather was beautiful and our

hosts Ed and Joni Hall did a bang up job of keeping

everyone informed, busy and having fun. We had 18

rigs, 35 members and guests in attendance. Our guests

were Josh and Megan McGrath from Charlotte and we

all had opportunity to meet our two new club members

Paul and Jan Maggi from Maine! It was great bike riding

or walking weather and the remote controlled sailboat

regatta was fun to watch. The days were warm and the

evenings chilly enough to make campfire watching very

enjoyable. Saturday’s dinner at the Charleston Crab

House was wonderful and Saturday breakfast was a hit;

of course I ate too much again and we still had leftovers!

Now on to New Bern for our spring rally. Hosts Larry

and Pam Brodsky have a full slate of things to do and

we’ll have plenty of time to tour New Bern. The New

Bern KOA has been completely remodeled and

upgraded (it was great before) so if you haven’t planned

on joining us, please call the campground and check on

availability. AND be sure if you plan on camping with

us to click on the RSVP button on our

website. It’s the only way we have to know how much

food to order and meeting space we will need.

Please order your club flag now. Our beautiful new

flags are in and are shipping now. It makes a powerful

impression for other campers to see Airstreams with

flags flying! If you haven’t ordered yours, please do so

now in time for the New Bern rally via our website.

Your flag will be shipped as soon as Treasurer

Cherylanne receives your check.

Here’s a little camping story I want to share. On the

way home from our rally in Charleston, Cathy and I

stopped at a stoplight. It was nice and warm and my

window was down. The car next to me rolls up and I

hear “Sir!” Of course thinking I had a problem, I

responded “hello” and waited. A young woman says “I

love your trailer, did you restore it yourself?” Now, for

a fleeting moment I thought this would be a great

opportunity to not only look smart but talented

too! But why start now? So, I responded “no, it’s only

two years old”. The woman looked on in

disbelief. Seeing this hadn’t sunk in yet, I responded

“yep, they still make ‘em!” The light turns green and

the woman says in parting “I never see them at any of

the shows, but I still like it.” Maybe we have a new

member in the making.

Rally on! Hopefully we will see you down the road soon.

Phil

2020 RALLY PLANNING BRUCE THOMPSON, 2ND VP

Hey Streamers! It’s finally Camping Season!! And, we

brought it into full swing with our opening rally at

James Island – good weather and well attended.

Everyone had a grand time.

NEXT YEAR – 2020, we’re planning something for

everyone:

1. There’s an upcoming planning meeting to work on a

short Blue Ridge Caravan for our group in early spring.

Results will be posted next month, but get ready to see

some of the best views NC has to offer.

2. Two of our newest members – Roger & Robin

Holland are actively working with city officials of

Shelby, NC in organizing our first ever urban rally

targeting May (2020). Please visit the Uptown Shelby

Association website or their Facebook page to see this

exciting venue. We’ll be parking around the old

courthouse and the Earl Scruggs Center – which

happens to be at the front door of several restaurants,

lots of shopping, and the Newgrass Brewing Co. - all

less than a block away. Save a place on your calendars

when the date is published for this and watch for more

news!

March 2019

3. Something Old – make sure you get your reservations

in early for our November rally at Ocean Lakes – our

highest attended rally. You would do well to get your

spot, while you’re down there in 2019 for next year in

2020! We usually fill up our HH section.

4. Something New – we’ll have to add a new

campground to our repertoire. Our scouts are

checking a possible venue in the heart of the

Piedmont, near the NC Transportation Museum, the

Childress Racing Museum and Vineyards, the Gold

Hill Mines, and Boone’s Cave Park, and, of course, the

Barbecue Capital of North Carolina. Now that should

have you guessing ;-)

Stay tuned – there’s more to come. If you have a

favorite camp spot that can host 15 rigs or more, just

let the camping scouts know (that’s Suzanne

Schneider, Ray Combs, Carol Combs, and myself).

Thanks for all the suggestions – we have a great list

going!

See you at New Bern!

Bruce

NEWS FROM MEMBERS

Do you enjoy Cast Iron cooking?

Jim and Deb visited the new Lodge Cast Iron store in

Charlotte to check it out. Scored free coffee and helpful

advice. The store's big inside, the folks are helpful,

parking is easy, and on Saturdays they do cooking

demos. Complete selection of their products and

accessories by them and others. Delighted to also find

the section in the back with "seconds" which would

clearly meet Jim’s needs and expectations - the

disqualifying issues are minuscule and Neither

structural nor function issues.

Their address is 8656 Concord Mills Blvd, sharing

Lowes Building Supply entrance. Jim’s two favorite

stores next door to each other. Cool!

Susanne’s favorite sign in Florida

Snippets from the Road

Food Lion parking lot, Georgetown, SC

A lady in a SUV stopped beside Keith and I, as we were

walking, hand in hand, out of the Food Lion and said

to us in a loud but wonderful voice:

“I tell you one thing! I want my husband to hold my

hand! I’m gonna go home and raise cain!”

And then she drove off — home I suppose — to raise

cain!!
