Target audience research:
1) Fifty shades of grey is rated 15
at the cinema. It is coming out on
Valentines Day which will obviously attract
most couples as it is about a man and a
women who meet on a job interview and
fall madly in love. But later on finding out
that Mr Grey is into much more than just
love. Would be inappropriate for years
under the age of 15 as it is explicit. Ages
range between 15 and 50 as there has
been a series of books which have a
massive fan base.
2) The theory of everything is rated
15. It is about Stephen Hawkins and the
events in his life. He meets a lovely girl
before having the illness. You experience
the thoughts and feelings of both
characters. The target audience would be
for anyone with interest in his life. This
could also range from anywhere from 15 years and 50.
3) The Wedding Ringer is rated 15. It is about a man who hires his best man two weeks
before his wedding and experiences all kinds of disastrous events. Romantic comedy with
lots of famous actors such as Kevin Hart and Josh Gad. Which will give the film a lot of
celebrity endorsement. Target audience will be anyone from the age of 15 and above.
4) Inherent vice is a romantic film with a twist. If you dont like the complete soppy film this
is perfect. With gun fights and a lot of action it creates a very good film. The target audience
for this film is for men and women and it appeals to both genres. The film includes actors
such as Owen Wilson, Josh Brolin.
Audiences are broken down by:
1. Age
2. Gender
3. By Demographics
Most Romantic films are targeted at females and are usually rated 12 or 15 meaning that the target
audience age generally ranges from 12 -24. As part of our research into the target audience of
romantic films we gave our questionnaires to people who we considered to be part of the target
audience (young females) and also some who are not in the target audience to see why those in the
target audience enjoy romantic films and why those who are not do not enjoy these films.
Romantic films are generally watched by groups of teenage girls or couples. The genre
is popular with couples because it creates a nice atmosphere for the couple to enjoy each others
-
company and to relate to what they see on screen.
Romantic films can be defined where a plot is revolved around the love of two protagonists. The
theme usually has a theme that explores an issue with love. E.g. Love at first sight, a love triangle, a
forbidden love and sacrificial love. They can vary massively as the ending could be happy or
devastating. They aim to promote strong feelings in the audience.
Romantic sub-genres:
Romantic drama - Explores the complex side of love. Usually involving something that is preventing it
from happening. Most Romantic Dramas end in the people never speaking again because of how big
the obstacle was. The last songs trailer has an up beat
Romantic comedy- Catch the viewers heart with love and humour. Usually light hearted and the
protagonists in a humorous situation. Ends in a happy ending.
