Empire Magazine

As found from Empire Magazine’s media pack, their target audience is:

• “Largely male”• “18-40” There is such a wide demographic due to the wide range of highly anticipated and popular feature films that are

reviewed, such as Ridley Scott’s Prometheus.

• ”In a relationship (but not necessarily married)”• ”University educated” • “Time-poor and relaxation-diminished” This could be inferred by the short length of the review and the large pictures to

brighten up and make the page more interesting. The articles are also made easier to read by the use of chatty and informal language, also sometimes using slang. There is a moderate register of language so that the reviews make for easy, relaxing and recreational, rather than intellectual reading.

• “For people that study cinema, but also for people interested in other worlds” The films reviewed are ones that are highly popular and anticipated by mass audiences, such as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Little White Lies

As also found from a press pack made by Little White Lies, I have found that the target audience is:

• “18-30”• ”Young professionals, students or graduates with high disposable income in the creative

industry” This is suggested through the arty, graphical layout and style of the magazine.• “Time rich” Suggested by the fact that there are many articles of long length.• “Likely to enjoy independent and cult cinema as a discussion point and an art form” The articles

have a high register of language and you must have an in-depth knowledge of other films to be able to understand it. There are some more indie and art house films reviewed by the magazine.

Sight and Sound

From research into BFI’s subscriber audience, I have found that their target audience are mainly:

• “25+” An older demographic due to the films reviewed which tend to be intellectual and thought-provoking, such as Midnight Winds.

• “For anyone serious about film” The reviews contain references to other films, therefore you would have to be a film fanatic so that you would understand them.

• Highly educated, due to the high register of language used such as polsyllabic, low frequency words.

• The lengthly articles mean that the reader must be time rich in order to be able to read it.
