Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1Arrive into Kilimanjaro International Airport with transfer to Arusha

Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport where you will be met by your driver for road transfer to Onsea House where you will overnight in theserene and tranquil surroundings.

Onsea is located just outside the town of Arusha, perfectly positioned on the drive from Kilimanjaro Airport.  Owner managed and spread outover two levels, the House has an intimate and friendly feel. Add to this the superb staff and a reputation of culinary excellence, and OnseaHouse is a brilliant pre or post safari stopover.

Day 2Game Drive Transfer to Tarangire National Park

After breakfast at the lodge, you will be met by your guide for the game drive transfer to Oliver’s Camp in Tarangire National Park including apacked lunch to enjoy en route.

On arrival at Oliver’s Camp, spend the afternoon settling into your stylish room and the beautiful surroundings. After tea, experience your firsttaste of the wild and beautiful Tarangire National Park on an afternoon game drive with one of the superb guides. If you wish, the option of anight drive is also available at an extra cost; watch the antelopes feed in the cool night air and predators stalking their prey under the cover ofdarkness. Otherwise, sip a cool gin & tonic as the sun sinks below the horizon and head back to camp for dinner under a blanket of stars.

Day 3Morning & Afternoon Game Drives

After breakfast with the rising sun, you will leave camp with your guide for the morning drive. Drives are conducted in comfortable 4×4vehicles and will last roughly 4-5 hours, offering the chance to spot buffalo, elephant, giraffe, gazelle and, of course, the ever presentpredators. Take a picnic lunch with you and eat under the shade of the large baobabs that dot the landscape, or head back to camp andenjoy lunch in the main dining room.

Relax in camp during the heat of the day, before continuing your exploration of the area on the afternoon drive. In the evening, enjoy dinnerat the camp and head to the campfire where whiskies are poured and safari tales told late into the night.

Day 4Depart Tarangire for the Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast, pack your bags and begin the drive to The Highlands Camp set on the edge of the mountain forest hugging the Olmotivolcano to the north of the Ngorongoro Crater.  Oliver’s Camp will provide a packed lunch to enjoy on the journey.

After you have settled in to your domed suite.  An optional extra activity is to spend the afternoon following the ancient Maasai trails to the topof the Olmoti crater.  The gentle 2-3 hour ascent leads you through mountain forest, grassland and rocky outcrops and is a botanist’s dreamwith varying vegetation and a variety of splendid fern species on show. The birding is outstanding and once at the summit, you will be treatedto a simply stunning view of the Olmoti crater itself. On return to camp settle in for the night around the inside fireplace, the perfect place tounwind at the end of your long day exploring.

Day 5Exploring the Ngorongoro Crater

Wake up with the rising sun and begin the 40 minute drive from The Highlands to the Ngorongoro Crater rim. Look out for the zebrainterspersed with the Maasai cattle as they are brought out to pasture, and the magnificent view down to the Ngorongoro Crater. You willspend the morning exploring the vast 300 sq km crater floor with the opportunity to spot the Big 5 and the many roaming predators presenton the mineral rich floor.

Lunch will be served on the crater floor, and in the afternoon, you may continue your exploration of the crater or perhaps visit one of the localMaasai communities close to camp, offering an insight into the traditional way of life that has defined this corner of East Africa for centuries.

Day 6Drive and Fly to Olakira Migration Camp

Depart The Highlands Camp with a road transfer to Manyara Airstrip to meet with your light aircraft flight into the migration camp.

As the Great Migration moves with the seasons, so Olakira follows to ensure guests always have a front row seat to nature’s greatestspectacle. With nine spacious tents, complete with full en-suite facilities and our specially designed stargazing tents, Olakira treats its gueststo a uniquely personal and authentic East African experience in two amazing locations in the Serengeti. In addition, you’ll have theopportunity to spend the night in one of camp’s new and unique stargazing tents.

Depending upon time of year you wish to travel you will either spend time at Olakira South (December to March) or Olakira North (June toNovember).

Days 7 & 8Watching the Great Wildebeest Herds

Depart from camp for your morning game drives as the sun casts its first rays over the land. Spend some time watching the great wildebeestherds plunging across the Mara River (from Olakira North), or search for the predators that prowl across the landscape, waiting for anopportunity to pounce on the plains game that graze lazily on the grass.

Take breakfast with you and return to camp for lunch or leave camp a little later in the morning and enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush beforethe adventure continues on your afternoon drive. If you are sharing a vehicle on a Game Package basis, the camp will do everything they canto ensure your ideal itinerary for the day is met.

Private Vehicle & Guide

A private vehicle on safari is well worth considering if you consider your needs and wants differ from the average safari goer.  It allows youfreedom to spend as long as you want at sightings – for example you may be a keen birder and enjoy identifying as many species aspossible.  In the case of keen photographers, not to have others in the vehicle gives you time and space to get the perfect angle/lighting.

 

Price:  £390 per vehicle per day (Minimum 2 days)

 

Day 9Depart Camp after Breakfast

After a delicious breakfast, it’s time to bid farewell to camp and depart with your guide to the relevant Airstrip, where you will catch your flightback to Arusha for any onward connections.

After safari relax on the beach in Zanzibar staying for 4 nights at Matemwe Lodge, a vibrant yet relaxed boutique hotel perched on a coralrock outcrop overlooking a sandy beach gently sloping into the Indian Ocean.

Enjoy fresh seafood and poolside cocktails, relax in the spa or for the more active, the lodge offers superb diving and snorkeling off therenowned Mnembe Atoll; a highlight for many. Matemwe is just 60 minutes’ drive from Stone Town, allowing for easy day trips andexcursions to all corners of the island.

 

Day 9

After breakfast, depart camp and make your way to the Airstrip. Here you will bid your guide farewell as you board your flight to ZanzibarAirport. On arrival at Zanzibar Airport you will be met and transferred by road to Matemwe Lodge in the north east of the island.

Days 10, 11 & 12

Relax into island life and plan your activities around the tides of the day. There are a variety of activities available either at Matemwe Lodgeor through our trusted partners; both can be booked at the lodge reception. It is advisable to book activities outside of the lodge 24 hours inadvance, and the staff at Matemwe will do everything they can to secure you a convenient time and day. Otherwise, simply relax in ahammock and watch the dhows drifting in and out, accompanied by the songs of the village women as they harvest seaweed on the beach.In the evening, sip a cool gin and tonic as the moon rises over the ocean, and enjoy fresh seafood bought daily from the fishermen in theopen-air restaurant.

Day 13

Depending on the time of your flight out of Zanzibar, a day room at Matemwe can be arranged, giving you time to relax and shower beforeyour journey. You will be met at the lodge and transferred to Zanzibar Airport for your onward flight.

 

Price per person: From £1774 including flight from Serengeti (Ndutu) to Zanzibar based on travel in March.  Excludes yourinternational flight out of Zanzibar.

Olakira CampOlakira Camp has nine spacious tents complete with full en-suite facilities and specially designed stargazing tents.  The key activityis wildlife viewing with the aim to get guests into the core game areas whether that be on the plains of Ndutu (where walking is alsopossible) or the Mara River.
