Principal’s Message These are busy times at Tanilba Bay Public School. There is so much going on at the school at the moment, it is no wonder that the students all look very happy and excited to be coming to school. We have students demonstrating outstanding skill and success in a variety of pursuits including Public Speaking, Debating, Rugby League and Athletics. We also have ten students who have been selected to go in to the Gifted and Talented class at Hunter River HS next year; well done to all of those students. Next week, we have students in Stage 2 heading off to The Great Aussie Bush Camp for three days of fun and Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 are going to the theatre in Newcastle. Congratulations to Bayley Stockwell (KF), Izak Tetevano (KS) and Taniesha Tetevano (2R) who, were all selected to proceed to Regional level in Public Speaking – outstanding effort! Congratulations also to our excellent Debating Team on their hard fought debates this week. They had two debates this week and represented our school brilliantly. Our team were just beaten on Tuesday and we beat Soldiers Point PS on Wednesday. Thanks to Mrs Drummond for preparing and organising the team. 2013 NRL Rebecca Young Cup – Congratulations to our Girls Rugby League team (I believe this is the first girls rugby league team our school has ever had) who had a great day on Tuesday, winning their pool and being named Newcastle/Port Stephens Champions in the Rebecca Young Cup. Our girls were undefeated in this section of the day and then played Telarah PS (Hunter Valley Champions) in the Grand Final. Our girls played an excellent game in the Grand Final but were beaten in a close match with Telarah PS . However, as Newcastle/Port Stephens Champions our team will now travel to Ryde on

Wednesday 21st August to play against other successful teams in the State Championship. Congratulations to all of the girls and to Mr Gattenhof for his coaching efforts. Good luck to everyone in Sydney. More information about the day and photos can be found at https://www.facebook.com/NrlDevelopmentNewcastle.

TBPS Girls Rugby League Team Zone Athletics Carnival – Congratulations to all of our students who represented the school at the Zone Athletics Carnival this week. I have been informed that our students were fantastic representatives not only in their events but also with their behaviour and school spirit. Good luck to all of our athletes who have been selected to go the Regional Athletics Carnival. Thanks to Mrs Smoother for coordinating our school athletics carnival and the Zone Representatives. All Schools Rugby League Knockout - Congratulations to all of the boys in the Under 10’s Rugby League team who travelled to Penrith on Monday 29th July to play in the State Championship.

Our boys were undefeated in the pool stage and were one of the top qualifiers in the finals. Sadly for the boys, in our first final we went from winning the game to losing the game in the final minutes after dominating most of the game. We had a try disallowed and then the other team scored 30 seconds later to win the game 6-0. Well done to all of the boys for the high level of skill they demonstrated and the team spirit with which they played every game. Thanks to Dr Marchant and Mr Gattenhof for their coaching efforts. Education Week – Thank you to all of the parents and family members who attended our Education week activities last week, it was a fabulous week and a real celebration of our school and everything we do. Our Art Show was excellent and we raised quite a bit of money from sales on the day. Thanks to Mrs Kovalevsky and her team for organising all of our activities during the week. Parent/Teacher Interviews – Thank you to all of the parents who attended our parent/teacher interviews yesterday. We trialled a new format and most of the feedback from parents and teachers has been very positive. Kindergarten 2014 Please make sure you get your enrolment papers in as soon as possible so we can start organising our class groups and have everything organised to make sure your child’s first days at TBPS are happy and successful. Also, if you know of anyone who intends to enrol their child in kindergarten at TBPS next year, who is currently involved with the school, encourage them to contact us as soon as possible. We all look forward to seeing you at our parent information evening next week, the Teddy Bears Picnic and our orientation days. Have a great weekend. Stuart Wylie Principal ES1 What a great day was had last Friday!! The weather was beautiful and the children had lots of fun at our sports carnival. We certainly have some future Olympians in ES1. We hope you enjoyed the Open Day. There are still paintings available that can be purchased for $2. We are getting excited about our trip to Newcastle next Wednesday to watch the stage production of Possum Magic. We hope the weather is good for the picnic at the Foreshore after the performance. Big congratulations to Bayley Stockwell and Izak Tetevano who have been chosen to speak at the Regional Finals for Public Speaking after competing at the Zone Finals last Monday. Well done boys!!. Preparations are underway for our Performance Night next term. ES1 are performing a circus theme. We may need the help of parents to make costumes and scenery. If you are interested in helping can you please let your child’s teacher know and we will be in touch. Please make sure your child’s clothing is clearly labelled with their name. The mornings are still cold but the days are becoming hotter and the children do take their jumpers and jackets off if they are too warm. Orientation days for 2014 Kindergarten are coming up. If you know of anyone who has a child beginning school in 2014 please ask them to get in touch with the school and become involved in these days. Thanking You, Kindergarten Teachers. Stage 1 The students in Stage One have had an extremely busy start to the term and we still have many exciting events to come! Last week, we participated in activities for Literacy and Numeracy Week. sticking with newspaper and attach as a tail. Pink Pig (Wilbur – Charlotte’s Web) Wear all pink clothes, use an egg carton piece for a nose, tie it with elastic, make pink ears from cardboard as in the cat above. Use a pink pipe cleaner curled for a tail.

Debating August This week has been very busy for the debating team as we competed in two debates. On Tuesday we debated against Medowie P.S. ,the topic was “ Should students have an extra afternoon each week for sport?’ It was a very close debate, however Medowie were the proclaimed the winning side. On Wednesday Tanilba debated against Soldiers Point P. S. The topic was “Should parents ban their children from watching T.V. during the week? “ both teams presented some great arguments, we were triumphant on the day. This is the end of the competition for 2013. The students have really enjoyed this competition and learnt many new skills. Thank you to our awesome team of Abbey Irwin, Jack Hagan, Dylan Eyb. Elizabeth Hollings, Kaylah Newey. Noah Dawson and Callum Port Rose.
