Principal’s Message
There are thirteen school days left of the 2013
school year with the last day for students being
Wednesday 18th December. Term 4 is always a very
busy yet enjoyable time in all schools. We currently
have swim school running, we had the Carlingford
High School Band perform this week and we had our
combined scripture concert. There are so many
other things we have to fit in these final few days, I
don’t know where we will find the time. However, I
look forward to the fun and excitement the coming
weeks will bring!
2014 School Year
We currently have 520 students for the 2014 school
year which will be spread across 21 classes. Another
classroom will be installed over the Christmas
holidays to accommodate our 21st class. We are still
getting the occasional new Kindergarten enrolment
and new students moving to the area, which is
changing our numbers daily. If you are relocating
over the break and your child will not be returning to TBPS in 2014, please advise the front office or
your child’s teacher ASAP if you have not already
done so.
Reports to Parents
All teachers are currently working on our students’
end of year reports, which will be sent home on
Monday 16 December 2013. Students from Years 1 -
6 are reported using a common grading scale which
is based on clearly defined state-wide syllabus
standards drawn from the Board of Studies
syllabuses. The common grading system is mandatory
in all public schools in NSW. As always if you have
any questions regarding your child’s report or
progress contact your child’s teacher to make an
appointment.
Year 6 Farewell
This night is one of the highlights of the year for Year
6 students, their parents and staff. We look forward
to an enjoyable evening of ‘Glitz and Glamour’ on
Tuesday 17th December in the Tanilba Bay School
Hall. Doors will open at 4.45pm for a 5.00pm start
with the formal Graduation Ceremony. Please note,
the evening will commence promptly so get
organised early.
Staffing Update
Ms Sue Fitzgerald (2F) has taken leave from TBPS for
the remainder of the year and has been replaced by
Mrs Jenny Blyth. I would like to welcome Mrs Blyth
to our school community.
I would like to welcome Alan Beedon to Tanilba Bay
Public School, who will start working at TBPS on
Monday as our General Assistant. Al is an
experienced General Assistant from Tomaree High
School and is looking forward to getting stuck in to
our grounds.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dave Eggert, who has been our relieving General Assistant
in 2013. Dave has done a great job and we have
appreciated his effort.

Kindergarten News
What an exciting and busy term it has been and
there is more to come! We hope that you enjoyed our fabulous Performance as much as we enjoyed
performing for you! Perhaps in the future there may
be an Oscar winner who comes from Tanilba Bay,
Australia!
We have been very busy doing assessments, as well
as our normal classwork, for our Semester 2 Reports
which will go home in Week 11. It is wonderful to
see so many students working very hard and
achieving great results.
There are a few things that all students need to do
before the end of term. Could everyone please
return all school library books by this Friday 29th
November as borrowing will finish on this day.
Please check in Lost Property in the wet area of
K/1B and 1K for any missing items. There are a lot of
new smaller jumpers with no names on them. Please
label ALL property. Thanks!
Keep bringing in P & C Raffle tickets as they are sold.
It was great to see so many parents at our Parent
Helper Morning Tea. Thank you again to all of those
people who are able to help us in the school, for
your wonderful generosity.
Next week our special Christmas Assembly will begin
at 2.00pm. We hope to see you there for lots of
Christmas fun.
Kind regards,

Kindergarten Teachers
Stage 1
This term is going very quickly, it is hard to believe
that we are in week 8 already! The students in Stage
One have been working extremely hard in class.
On behalf of the Stage One teachers, I would like to
take this opportunity to congratulate all of the
students on their dedication, perseverance and
outstanding behaviour during performance week. We
have received positive feedback from parents and
members of the wider school community and we were all so proud of the students and their
performances.
Swim school has now begun and the students have
been enjoying learning how to swim at the local pool.
Congratulations to the many children who received
their Purple PBL badges last assembly. Well done!
Happy birthday wishes go to: Madeline Lilley, Taliah
Billett, Luca Jones, Ryley King, Tarah Sharp, Lachlan
Chamberlain, Jake Merrick and Mason Holbert.
The library this term has been a buzz of activity both
in class time and at lunchtimes. Early Stage One have
been discovering our new picture books that have
arrived, as well as discussing and learning about non-
fiction books. These students have shown a great
interest in the world around them, especially the
world of underwater marine life and fossils.
Stage One have been learning about the story ‘the Terrible Suitcase’ by Emma Allen and Freya
Blackwood and what it would be like if we were to
travel into space. The students had to discuss and
think about what would be the most important items
to take.
3G and 4/5B have been studying the novel ‘the
Worry Tree’ by Marianne Musgrove, about a little
girl who discovers a hand painted tree on her
bedroom wall, under the wallpaper of her new room.
There are painted animals in the tree and each animal
helps her to understand and talk about her many
problems, enabling her to have a settled sleep at
night. The students are really enjoying this novel and
have been able to discuss aspects of their lives that
worry them.
Stage Two have been working on the discoveries of
Ancient Egypt. The students have been involved in
mapping, brainstorming facts about Egypt,
comprehension skills, watching documentaries on the
building of the pyramids and looking at artefacts. Lily
Morris of 4S was kind enough to bring in a couple of
amazing artefacts from her mum’s Egyptian
collection. One of the items was a beautifully
designed painting on an authentic piece of papyrus, a
small stone pyramid and the other, a sandstone lamp
that projects a three-dimensional image of King
Tutankhamen through the use of light. We thank Lily and her mum so very much for sharing with us their
special artefacts.
Stage Three have been working extremely hard on
writing Information Reports on the Weddell Seal.
These students have been working on writing
bibliographies, writing in their own words and
checking information and it’s validity.
Lunchtime Library Fun!!!
Our school library is open Monday through to
Thursday at lunchtimes, except for wet weather.
The students enjoy a variety of activities, drawings,
games, computers and dramatic play. Students are
encouraged to “Be Friendly” and cooperate in the
playing of games and for the older students to care
for, assist and interact with the younger students in
peer situations. It is an exciting place to be and below
are a few pictures of just what we get up to in our
school library.

Scrapbooking
Another activity that students are involved in at
lunchtimes is our scrapbooking club. In this club,
students are taught how to mount photographs,
design pages, journal and use art, craft and computer
skills to enhance the pages. What do we scrap? The
photos of our amazing students in action at all our
school events, such as camps, swimming carnivals,
dance, performances, the list is endless!!! Any
students across the school are allowed to participate.
Some students turn up and complete one page,
others have stayed with the group all year. It is up to the individual student. The motto, however, is to
have fun!!!.
Senior Reading Book Club
At recess we have a small senior reading book club. The group is made up of students who have a passion
for reading and friendship. In our group, we have
been reading, discussing and researching the book
‘Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes’ by
Eleanor Coerr. The story follows a young girl
Sadako, who has been greatly affected by the
chemical fallout from the atom bomb on Hiroshima
in the 1940’s. The reading group, on finishing the
book, has recently begun learning how to make
paper cranes in memory of Sadako. The goal is to
make one thousand paper cranes for the library and
as you can see, the ones that have been made already
are fantastic. Below are the group’s thoughts and
feelings on the book:
Abbye Irwin 6K
Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes is a beautiful
story about a twelve year old girl who lives in
Hiroshima in the time of the atom bomb in Japan.
Sadako is such an inspiring young girl. The story is
about her life and is amazing especially me being the
same age, it made me feel so lucky to live in the
beautiful place we live in. Definitely a MUST read!!!
Kirsty Atkinson 6K I really like Sadako because it is interesting and sad
and it is a true story. I like the bit in the story where
they made the statue of her with a thousand paper
cranes below her in her memory.
Rhian Wilkinson 6K
Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes is based on a
true story. In Japan they have a park called ‘Peace
Park’ and in the centre they have a statue of Sadako
holding a big paper crane. Sadako was twelve years
old when she died. Sadako is a role model to many
others who have the same disease as her.
Kinder Transition Library Story Time
Each year in our library, Mrs Wylie and myself run a
two week art and craft story time program for new
kindergarten students who will be starting in the
following year. This program is provided as extra
time in our school to provide our new kindergarten
students with time in our library which is a large
space and to allow them time to become familiar
with another environment, meet staff and therefore
feel more comfortable on their arrival next year.
In this time we have been reading ‘It’s a George
Thing’ by David Bedford and ‘Dinosaur
Sleepover’ by Pamela Duncan Edwards. The
Page 5

children have then enjoyed making craft dinosaurs
and lion masks to go with the stories.
