I t’s a brand new year and Florida’s “High Season” is upon

us. With the economy down, it’s anybody’s guess how “high” the season will be. Nonetheless, every golf facility in the Tam-pa Bay area is prepared and hopeful that visitors will come in mass from the frozen Midwest and Northeast. If you are visiting, thanks for making the trip. Enjoy our warm, sunny weather and the many fi ne golf courses on Florida’s Central West Coast. You will fi nd very affordable rates and excellent course conditions. This issue’s cover story features Westchase Golf Club, a perennial Top of the List public golf facility located in West Tampa. First class service, excellent clubhouse facilities and fl awless putting surfaces make the Westchase Experience as good as it gets. The story begins on page 8. For local and visiting golfers alike, the inaugural Tampa Golfest at the Downs Golf Practice Facility in Oldsmar is a must go event. Scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, February 19-20, 2011, this demo day and golf lifestyle extravaganza promises something for everyone who attends. See this issue’s center spread and Local News for more details. Happy New Year and keep on swinging!

The folks at Westchase Golf Club are far too low-key to create a brassy slogan like “It’s Not Private, You’ll

Just Think It Is”. That line has actually come from more than one visitor to this quiet, upscale, but very public course lo-cated in the master-planned development of Westchase in Hillsborough County just northwest of downtown Tampa.

Award-Winning ExperienceThe visitors who coined that moniker

aren’t the only ones impressed by the day-in-day-out excellence of this 18-year-old

Lloyd Clifton design. The National Golf Foundation surveyed players at hundreds of courses for their prestigious CLASP (Customer Loyalty And Satisfaction Pro-gram) awards and ranked Westchase in the Top 10 nationally, and #1 in the state of Florida.

First-class customer service, an updat-ed clubhouse, and fl awless greens featuring Sea Dwarf Paspalum grass will create that kind of loyalty and satisfaction. But then there are the more subtle factors, like the gorgeous, yet serene nature-trail ride you’ll take every time you play Westchase.

Where Nature AboundsYou’ll appreciate subtleties like the

vertically planked bridges that bring a smoother, more tranquil feel as you navigate over the 16 lakes, 21 wetland conservation areas, 14 upland conserva-tion areas and the one creek that bisects the property. Cypress, oak, pine, maple and other trees comprise these beautiful natural habitats. Beautiful pickrel weed with its bright violet bloom, arrowhead, bulrush and water lilies are among the aquatic plant species inhabiting the wet-land areas.

Westchase’s 213 acres offer sanctu-ary to a myriad of wildlife including alligators, deer, turtles, bobcats as well as countless native and migratory birds. Since opening in 1992, at least two mat-ing pairs of American bald eagles have nested in pine trees on the golf course. Many golf courses love to trumpet their new upgrades or renovations, but other than the new greens and player-friendly changes to the clubhouse, Westchase has been the same fi rst-class facility since the day it opened 18 years ago. General Manager Clay Thomas went to work at

the course right out of college, right after Westchase opened, and Superintendent Gene Roberts helped build the layout from the ground up, and obviously has cared for it since its birth. It is that kind of “family” commitment that makes Westchase unique among upscale public courses anywhere.

The Course Layout Like the entire “experience”, Clifton’s designs are subtle and understated, like the classic lines of a luxury car or a well-tailored suit. This course isn’t one to wow you with a lot of sharp angles or targets that must be hit. It is just a consistently strong, yet fun, challenge to golfers of all skill levels. From the 6700-yard tips, you’ll get all you want from four solid par-5s, four par-4s over 400 yards and four par-3s that’ll likely send you to your bag for four different clubs off the tee.

Many of the greens, beginning with the very fi rst one, encourage you to bump the ball into them, though a solid aerial game comes in handy with more than a dozen of Westchase’s holes having water in-play.

The par-3 third might be Westchase’s “signature” hole, if they were into having something like that. The tee shot over wetlands and water gets longer to clear the bulkhead and hit the green the farther right you play it. The other par-3s are also either all-carry to get to relatively small putting surfaces, or deceptive in their green design.

The three par-4s in the middle of the front nine again show some of the subtleties of Westchase, the long distance the homes are set back from the course, the mixture of pines and palms lining the fairways. The three fi nishing par-4s on the back side feature two of West-chase’s toughest holes. GM Thomas loves

16th-17th combo, the two longest par 4s on the back side, both demanding distance control and shot placement for a successful approach to the pins. New carts with the detailed graphics of ProLink GPS are there to guide you all the way.

The only two parallel holes at West-chase are the 9th and 18th, both with marshland carries on the approach to greens visible from the Westchase Grill clubhouse dining room and veranda. Diners not only have a perfect view of golf outside, they’re in a wonderfully collegial environment inside. And with separate private rooms and a large main dining area, Westchase is perfect for any sized meeting, conference, wedding or golf event, from a couple of foursomes to a full-course charity outing.

Why waste time driving? Feather Sound’s stunning golf course and meeting facilities are located in

the heart of the Tampa Bay area - between St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Tampa.

If you live in the Tampa Bay area we would love to have you as a member of our private country club. Feather Sound is one of the Tam-pa Bay area’s most prestigious private golf and country clubs. The par-72, 6900-yard cham-pionship layout features lush, broad fairways and TifEagle greens. Designed by Joe Lee and updated by Bob Cupp, the course is considered one of the best conditioned in the area.

The course is not your typical Florida design. With an open, airy, natural feel, there

isn’t a place on the golf course where you feel enclosed on both sides by houses and condos, unlike almost every other course in the area. The dedicated golfer will appreciate the chal-lenges that are offered on the well-guarded, elevated greens at Feather Sound..

Feather Sound’s seven-acre practice facility includes a laser-leveled natural turf teeing area with fi ve target greens, a short game practice area and practice putting green.

Professional golf instruction and golf schools are available. Our professional staff offers clinics using video lessons and our computerized swing analysis machine. The golf staff is available for scoring, pairing and on-course games.

D esigned by world-famous architect Donald Ross, the Bel-leview Biltmore Golf Club has been an American favorite since 1925. The 18-hole championship par-71 course has

a reputation for its challenging design which harmonizes beauti-fully with the surrounding environment. Nature, not houses, dominates the fi eld of play at the Biltmore. Crowned pedestal greens, a Ross trademark, invite run-up shots but tend to shed careless approaches, while well-placed fairway bunkers snare errant drives. Large water oaks and pines narrow a few fairways, and water comes into play on seven holes. But the biggest deter-rent to low scoring is the wind. In common with a links, much of the course is relatively fl at and exposed to Gulf breezes. Specializing in corporate and charity outings , the Biltmore’s professional staff will make any function, large or small, a complete success. Every golfer needs to be taught a method of playing golf that will bring out his/her personal best. The Shriver Golf Acad-emy instructors seek to help their students reach their highest potential. The Shriver Golf Academy offers private lessons, group clinics, day golf schools and junior programs. Visit www.beachgolfschool.com for details.

Fox Hollow Golf Club holds the enviable distinction of being the very last golf course in a long line

of world famous layouts to be built and designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Everywhere you turn, from the player-friendly fi ve sets of tees, to the rolling, undulating fair-ways, it’s vintage Robert Trent Jones Sr. But what really makes a Trent Jones Sr. golf course is the way it looks and feels — as though the piece of earth it occupies was always meant for the course he designed. Fox Hollow is no excep-tion. Although it was necessary to move

thousands of tons of dirt to create the gentle undulations and subtle elevation changes, it looks as though every blade of

grass, every tree, every drop of water has been there since time immemorial. Since the course was designed more than 16 years ago, Fox Hollow Golf Club has grown and developed into one of the Tampa Bay area’s fi nest

and most well-known semi-private clubs with one of Florida’s fi nest practice facili-ties and PGA Professional teaching staffs. All 18 greens and the practice putting green utilize SeaDwarf Seashore Paspalum turf. The greens run fast and true 365

The 15,000-square-foot clubhouse features an upscale dining room to serve as an alternative to the more relaxed atmosphere at the Windows On The Green Tavern. Both the tavern and the dining room share the fantastic views of the 18 green, 10th tee and the beautiful 10-acre lake. The Windows on the Green dining room not only provides the perfect weekly dining destination, but also serves as an ideal location for private parties - in-cluding weddings.

Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club is the “must play” course in Florida. Surrounded by rolling hills, this spectacular 36-hole facility was rated as one of the “Top

10 New Upscale Courses” by Golf Digest and also owns a Golf Digest 4 ½-Star rating. Lake Jovita is a continued host of PGA TOUR Q-School since 2000. Located a 20-minute drive northeast of Tampa, Lake Jovita is ideally situated just a few minutes from I-75. Lake Jovita is blessed with rippling terrain and tall hard-woods that give it a North Carolina look. Freshwater lakes dot the landscape and quicken the pulse of an avid golfer. In fact, the club’s South course features the longest natural drop of any course in the state—94 feet from tee to green on the par-5 11th hole. Tom Lehman, the PGA Tour star who designed Lake Jovita South, built greens with subtle, even confounding, contours. The North Course – with its fast, true greens – boasts even more elevation changes than its sister course. Lake Jovita offers several stay-and-play packages, as well as daily tee times for those not staying on-site. Visitors can stay at privately owned three-bedroom/two-bath Club Villas overlooking the 18th green. A 32,000 sq. ft. clubhouse and a 15-acre practice facility complement the courses.

World Woods Re-Opens Renovated Rolling Oaks Course

World Woods Golf Club took one more step this past sum-mer toward meeting its goal

of being the Southeast’s best 36-hole golf complex. The Rolling Oaks Course, closed since June 1, reopens November 1 after a complete renovation.

“Both courses at World Woods are in

the best condition that I’ve ever seen them in since opening the facility in 1993,” said General Manager and Director of Golf Stan Cooke. “My commitment to all customers is that your next World Woods experience will be extraordinary with customer satisfaction guaranteed.”

been re-surfaced with TifEagle Bermudagrass, chosen according to Cooke because “Tifeagle best suits the to-pography and character of Rolling Oaks. TifEagle is the proven grass with no mutations based on all the choices we tested.”

While Rolling Oaks contouring remains the same, the greens have been restored to their original size. This is a 20 percent expansion in the size of the greens prior to renovations.

The Pine Barrens course remains a par-71 and Rolling Oaks remains a par-72, but both courses have extensive new teeing grounds resulting in extended yardages for both courses.

Pine Barren’s greens remain in immaculate condi-tion. With the renovation, Rolling Oaks greens will run as true and as fast as those on Pine Barrens.

World Woods has also added new cart paths throughout the facility and a new fl eet of golf carts. The clubhouse has been totally refurbished and course restroom facilities have been renovated as well.

The Club at Eaglebrooke golf course was designed by renowned architect Ron Garl and opened for play in 1996. Located in southern Polk County, Eaglebrooke

is convenient to the Tampa Bay area. From the lush, rolling fairways to the meticulously manicured greens you know you’ve found a treasure as soon as you approach the fi rst tee. Undulating fairways meander along bunkers and scenic lakes to multi-leveled greens giving this championship golf course a challenging yet forgiving appeal. With six sets of tees, every level of golfer from the beginner to the more experienced player will fi nd just the right challenge. Golf Digest has consistently rated Eaglebrooke Four and One-Half stars and has designated the course as one of the Best Places To Play for the past nine years. Currently semi-private, Eaglebrooke is a full service country club committed to the highest standards. Eaglebrooke’s professional team can arrange golf outings and events as well as teaching clinics held independently or combined with meetings, seminars or other banquet events. Individual instruction is also available. Our Head Golf Pro-fessional has achieved a Class A rating from the PGA.

78 tampabay.golfersguide.com FALL/WINTER 2010-11

I ’m an advocate of the long putter and have been since 1988. I fi nd that it is particularly helpful for golfers who have

putted well in the past and then completely lose their touch, something I see happen to a lot of good players. I feel that the ball rolls better with a longer putter then the standard shorter putter because the natural release of the clubhead produces immediate overspin. What I like about this approach is that it reduces anxiety, which automatically creates confi dence. Since I have adopted this ap-proach, I have never stood over a putt with doubt that I would make it. Putting with this putter is like stealing. It’s too easy!

To use the long putter successfully, I recommend that it fi t so that the butt end of the club rests snugly in the center of your chest. The butt end of the putter should stay in the same position throughout the putting stroke, acting as an anchor from which the club swings. The benefi t of this style of put-ting is that there are fewer moving parts. Your top hand holds the putter close to the chest, while your bottom hand freely swings the putter. Imagine a pool player who stabilizes the cue with the front hand and uses the rear hand to generate the power and necessary feel and fi nesse. To me this is the same ap-proach. I believe that our feel is in our hands

and by using the long putter the dominating factor is in the bottom hand.

Since the long putter may not be for everyone, I apply a different principle when teaching the conventional putting method. I recommend reducing hand action as much as possible so that your shoulders swing the putter head. I also recommend that you practice putt one-handed, fi rst putting a few balls with your right hand, then a few with your left. Invariably, you will fi nd that one hand has more control of distance and direc-tion and feels better. The hand that has the best “feel” is the hand that should dominate the putting stroke: if your right hand is more dominate, concentrate on a right-hand stroke; if your left hand appears to be more dominate, concentrate on a left-hand stroke.

I always suggest alternative styles if you’re not feeling confi dent. I recommend the cross-handed grip or – for right-handed players – a left-hand low grip. These styles help you rely on the use of your shoulders and not your hands in the putting stroke. ■

Jim Cocchi is the 2010 West Central Chapter PGA Golf Professional of the Year. To schedule a putting lesson, call Jim at (352) 238-0114.
