A children’s c ancer awareness fun walk was held on 13 September at Modderfontein Parkrun. This was in honour of a little girl who lost her life due to cancer a short while back, and little “Gummy” (Jacinda van Zyl) who is just three years old. Gummy was diagnosed with kidney cancer just before New Year’s Eve. She has been receiving chemotherapy since the beginning of the year and hopefully had her final session on 15 September. The walk was to raise awareness for childhood cancer, with everyone wearing yellow T-shirts (as gold is the colour for child cancer) printed with a photograph of little Gummy. The walk was also held to collect donations to create a play area for the children at the Donald Gordon Children’s Cancer Ward, as some of the children spend most of their time there.

Woolworths has announced plans to reduce the current number of products containing ingredients derived from genetically modified (GM) crop sources in private label foods by 50 percent over the next year. Currently only 5,3 percent of Woolworths private label foods contain ingredients from potential GM crop sources and this should drop to less than 2,7 percent within 12 months. In 1999 Woolworths announced a policy on genetically modified ingredients and in 2000 introduced GMO labelling so that customers could make informed buying decisions. Every ingredient is checked back to source, and where it cannot be guaranteed that it was not derived from a GM crop, the ingredient is clearly labelled “may be Genetically Modified (GM).” Maize, soybeans and cotton are the only GM crops allowed to be grown in South Africa.

“The agricultural industry has changed significantly since GM crops were introduced in South Africa in 1998. It has become more challenging to source competitively priced ingredients from non-GM sources, and we are most grateful to our suppliers who have committed to taking this journey with us,” says Woolworths MD for Foods, Zyda Rylands. “Working together, we are identifying ingredients from non-GM crop sources that are both sustainable and commercially viable.” “Many of our customers have told us that they would prefer not to buy products that may contain ingredients from GM crop sources, and we respect their wishes. In addition to our commitment to remove GMOs where possible, we will continue to offer alternatives, such as our certified organic products, which are guaranteed free of GMOs, and of course currently no fruit and vegetables grown commercially in SA contain GMOs.”

Various Germiston residents have informed tame TIMES that their water meter readings did not show the free water units for the month of August. The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality wishes to confirm that on accounts where

the reading period split tariffs - between the previous and the new financial years - a printing error was identified. The charge calculations were perused and a detailed calculation will confirm that the free units were indeed correctly calculated.

EMPD Germiston Crime Prevention Unit members acted on a tip-off and as a result were able to recover approximately five tons of both wet and dry abalone and arresting three male suspects at Van Dyk Park in Boksburg on 16 September. The three men are Chinese nationals.Seemingly, the trio converted the rented house in Lemoen street into a mini-factory as all the rooms and the garage are equipped with huge freezers, gas cylinders and kilograms of various chemicals, said

EMPD Spokesperson, Wilfred Kgasago.“The freezers were filled with wet abalone while the dry ones were found on the floors in huge pans,” Kgasago added. The three arrested men, whose ages are 20, 23 and 27 and apparently have dodgy work permits, were charged with possession and dealing in an endangered species at Dawn Park Police Station. They are expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 15 September.

At the official launch at Scarlet Ribbon in StoneRidge Centre, Parker showcased the new additions to their Duofold, IM&Urban and Jotter ranges. Parker has spent 125 years pioneering innovation, style and unique craftsmanship in fine writing instruments, giving consumers the confidence to write their own stories and now new finishes have been added to the world renowned brand.

Duofold: Parker revives three of its most historical colours: Big Red, Lapis Lazuli and White Ivorine of the emblematic Duofold. Created in 1921, with acrylic finishes and an 18K gold nib, the elegant and premium pen encapsulates Parker’s unique writing experience. Duofold continues to be the flagship of Parker and is seen by collectors as an icon of fine writing pens. A replica of the limited edition Duofold pen that is retailed at R350 000 was also showcased. The pen is encrusted with gold and diamonds.

Parker reveals six new luxurious and contemporary finishes for its IM and Urban lines. The new collection is inspired by the emblematic Vacumatic pen which took the industry by storm when it was first launched in 1933.

Parker IM: The distinctive design of the sophisticated IM Brown Pearl with its satin shine and the smart Emerald Pearl with its timeless graphite tones are perfect for business and personal writing. The delicate Parker IM Pink Pearl will seduce

modern women looking for a stylish writing accessory.

Urban: The Urban line revives the Golden Pearl and the Silver-Blue Pearl finishes that immediately impress with their intense colour radiance and premium satin touch. The Urban Amethyst Pearl joins the range with a bold contemporary colour directly inspired by the historical Vacumatic.

Jotter: Parker celebrates the vibrant history of the iconic Jotter ballpoint by unveiling four new editions in a retro colour palette: Coral, Grey green, Pink and Whiteness, inspired by early models from the 1950s. This stunning 2014 revival is a one-year special edition release which celebrates Parker’s 125th anniversary of pen-making excellence.

Parker is recognised worldwide for its use of high quality materials and the company puts its renowned expertise into every pen through rigorous testing and attention to detail. In 1962, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain awarded Parker the Royal Warrant, a mark of recognition for Parker’s commitment to the highest standards of service and excellence, which the brand maintains to this day. Parker continues to believe in the importance of writing, because the words we speak can be heard by many, but the words we write transcend time.

Spring has finally arrived

and it is all about confidence and power, with

looks ranging from tribal glam, luxurious sportswear and couture ready-to-wear. This does not mean that you cannot embrace your feminine side - as the latest designs add a softer, more sensuous, side to the season. The tribal warrior look is back, sending out women “warriors” dressed in chequerboard prints decorated with Indian beadwork, embroidery and ostrich feathers. This tribal look is made to be worn with confidence and pride. The athletic trend has been lingering for a while, but this Spring/Summer, designers have added a high fashion attitude to the classic sportswear look. While technical fabrics made an appearance, it is all about luxury. Relaxed jumpsuits are glammed up with shiny fabrics; mesh tops made of suede are matched with basketball shorts and silk track- pants. You can also wear a tank top with black netted trackpants embroidered with gold. It is all about working out your style this summer. The line separating couture from ready-to-wear is fading as designers are differentiating themselves with impeccable craftsmanship, couture fabrics and detail - again featuring

embroidery and beadwork, transforming the well-known couture style fashion into an everyday streetwear look with a touch of femininity.

10 must-have items for springSlip-on flats: Typically low lace-less comfortable flat beach sandals available in every variation this season.Colourful coat: This outerwear appeared in most collections in modern pastel colours. Pleats: Get a skirt or dress with pleats to complement your chic look this season. Bomber jackets: This look can be toned down for a softer look with floral prints or silk fabrics.Logo/slogan Tee: Make a statement with a branded Tee or a slogan that says something about you. Metallics: Fashion featuring lamé and colours like gold will be spotted everywhere.Crop tops: If you dare to expose a little more skin, a crop top is a must-have.Shirtdress: Versatile and easy to wear for different occasions. Techno florals: Floral prints can complement your look and add femininity.

Come Pray for oUr ChilDreN East Rand for Jesus is a group of people who actively proclaim the 10 towns (Alberton, Germiston, Bedfordview, Edenvale, Kempton Park, Boksburg, Benoni, Brakpan, Springs and Nigel) in Ekurhuleni as God’s territory. We are a group of Christian volunteers from different denominations and ethnic groups and all walks of life. We will be hosting a “Pray for our Children” day at the Boksburg Stadium, which is in the heart of Ekurhuleni, on Wednesday 24 September, Heritage Day. Our children are our future, and they are being murdered and violated and neglected by the same adults whom God has assigned to protect them. The purpose of the prayer meeting will be to get the whole community involved – not the government, but civilians who are committed to the safety and protection of our children.

The four-man junior team from Modderfontein Golf Club defended their Louis Oosthuizen SA Junior Club Teams Championship title with a brilliant wire-to-wire victory at Mossel Bay Golf Club on Sunday 14 September.

The Modderfontein juniors hit the front with a first round 212 and combined for a 217 in the second round to hold on to pole position. Marco Steyn, Dylan Naidoo and newcomer Eric Wowor combined for a final round one-under-par 215 to seal the team’s back-to-back

success. Kingswood Golf Club vaulted into second on 650 with a final round 213, while Dainfern Country Club and Centurion Golf Club tied for third on 653.While the field played the first two rounds in a cool south-easterly wind, the 20 teams arrived to find a blustery north-westerly wind tearing around at the par-72 layout. The Gauteng quartet carried a six-stroke lead into the final round over Dainfern and simply took the overcast and cold conditions in their stride. Steyn carded a 70, Naidoo contributed a 72, Wowor registered a tournament best round of 73 and Karabo Mokoena closed with a non-counting 79.Team manager Lance Michler was full of praise for his young charges. “This win was a fantastic team effort and I am incredibly proud of all four players,” Michler said.

“We knew going into the championships that it would be tough, but the players handled the pressure and delivered a winning performance. Marco, Karabo and Dylan produced the goods in the first two

rounds, and our newbie Eric got over his nerves and came through for the team in the final round. We had no heroes on this team; they all played for each other and stood up to be counted over the three rounds. That’s what a team competition is all about.”Meanwhile David Meyers from Dainfern carded rounds of 72, 67 and 65 to top the Individual Standings on 12-under-par 204. new rules regarding parade rings were implemented countrywide at the beginning of the year. The racing Association, Gold Circle, Phumelela Gaming, The national Horseracing Authority and Kenilworth racing all agree that these rules will continue to enhance the image of the sport and ensure greater safety. Since 11 January 2014 access to a parade ring on any race day requires an rA, Gold Circle or nHrA badge.Horse-owners not belonging to an owner’s association can obtain valid badges from the NHRA. A letter has been sent by the

racing governing body clarifying this new arrangement, with Colin Hall the contact person to help resolve any queries.Badge-holders can bring guests into the parade ring, using day badges that will be distributed from information kiosks on the various racecourses. The dress code has been revised

and relaxed, but does not allow short pants and sandals. Also, children under 12 years of age may not enter the parade ring for safety reasons, and now that the introduction trial period has been successfully concluded, stricter measures will apply to ensure that access and dress code are adhered to.
