Bible Text Luke 16:19-31

Lazarus and the Rich Man

Jesus told the following parable to some Pharisees.

“There is a rich and respected man who lives in a beautiful house. The man can afford the best clothes and food. At the rich man’s door, however, lies a beggar who is full of sores and very hungry. The rich man knows the poor man well. He knows him as Lazarus.

Lazarus hopes that the rich man will give him something to eat. He wants to be fed with just the crumbs, which fall from the rich man’s table. The rich man does not worry about Lazarus and does not even look at him.1

One day Lazarus dies and the angels carry him to heaven, to Abraham’s bosom. Not long after that the

rich man also dies and is buried. Something very different, however, awaits him. He had to leave all his riches and all his goods on earth. The man that was once so rich finds himself in terrible suffering. He sees Lazarus who sits in Abraham’s bosom. He calls out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me.’2

Abraham answers, ‘Remember what it was like on earth! You had all one could wish for while poor Lazarus had to suffer. Now he is comforted and you are troubled. Now there is great gulf between us, so nobody can pass from here to you.’ Only now does the rich man realise his big mistake, but it is too late.3

He continues pleading, ‘Father Abraham, I beg you for I have five brothers, please send Lazarus to warn them so that they will not come to this place of torment.’

Abraham replies, ‘They have Moses and the prophets, let them hear them.’

The rich man replies, ‘No, Father Abraham they will not hear them. But if someone who has died goes to them, they will repent.’

Abraham answers, ‘They know Moses and the prophets and should listen to them. If they do not want

Things You Need

Rich man picture card (page 5 Poor man picture card (page 6) Chart paper Marker Scissors Glue or tape

Before You Teach the Lesson

• Divide the chart paper into two equal sections. Then place a line at the lower end of the paper (see Teacher Notes).

• Print and cut out the rich and poor man picture cards. Glue each picture in one of the sections on the chart paper.

What You Should Do

1 Give the children a few minutes to look at both pictures on the chart paper. Ask them to describe the person they see in the first column. As they respond write their answers on the chart paper under the picture. Then repeat the exercise with the picture in the second the column. Again, write their responses on the chart paper.

Ask the children to predict which man is more spiritually prepared. As the children respond, write an “x” in the bottom corresponding section of the column. Tell the children that in the lesson today they are going to learn about what happened between a rich man and a man named Lazarus.

LESSON INSTRUCTIONS FOR TEACHER

Lazarus and the Rich Man

What You Should Do

1 Begin telling the bible story. Ask them how they think Lazarus felt. Encourage them to share their answers. Then ask how they think the rich man felt. After they respond, tell them that the rich man placed more value on his earthly possessions than helping his neighbour. Continue telling the story

2 Emphasize that on earth, the rich man had everything he could have ever wanted and Lazarus had nothing. Now in eternity, Lazarus sits beside Abraham while the rich man finds himself in terrible suffering. Continue telling the story.

3 Ask if any of the children have ever done something that they

really regretted doing. Then ask if they wished that they could change the situation. Point out that sometimes we wish we could change the situation but it is too late and we have to live with the outcome whatever it may be. Finish telling the story to the end.

4 Explain to the children that the rich man wanted Lazarus to go warn his brothers about the turmoil they would experience in heaven if they continued living their life with a focus on their earthly riches. Abraham did not allow for this because they needed to accept and believe the teachers that God gave them on earth.

Things You Need

 Chart paper from Lead-In

Before You Teach the Lesson

• No preparation required.

What You Should Do

1 Draw the children’s attention to the chart paper from the Lead-In. Look at how many children thought the rich man was more spiritually prepared than the poor man. Then look at how many children predicted the poor man as more spiritually prepared than the rich man. Now after hearing the story, briefly discuss who

truly is more spiritually prepared. The rich man was wealthy and respected; however, he exalted himself above Lazarus.

2 Ask the children what the rich man should have done. After they respond, emphasise the right thing to do would have been to help Lazarus. Christ

taught us that we should love our neighbour which includes helping them physically. It does not matter if we are rich or poor. It pleases God when we live our lives according to Christ’s

teachings. When we do this, our spiritual development is not influenced by the amount of earthly wealth we possess or the circumstances that we go through.

Things You Need

Flame template (page 2) Paper plate (1 per child) Glue or tape Scissors Markers, crayons, or coloured pencils Decorating supplies

Before the Activity

• Print one flame template page for each child. Each child will need one set.

What You Should Do

1 Give each child a paper plate and a copy of the flame template. Tell the children to draw a small river in the middle of the plate. This small river divides the paper plate into two sections (see Teacher Notes). Then tell them to colour and cut out each flame. Next, have them glue each flame onto the left side of the paper plate.

2 On the right side of the paper plate, tell the children to draw a picture of what they think it heaven looked like where Lazarus was. Afterwards, ask them to write the memory verse on their plate. Then briefly review how the picture connects to the story.

Memory Verse: In life you

Age Level 7–10 years old

Things You Need

Questions and answer page (page 2) 5 to 10 empty plastic bottles Medium sized ball Pen and paper to record the score

Before the Activity

• At one end of the room, place the empty plastic bottles (see Teacher Notes).

• Opposite to the bottles, place tape or string approximately five metres (see Teacher Notes).

• Print the question and answer page.

What You Should Do

1 Divide the children into two teams. Ask each team to form a line behind the line. One at a time, ask the first person in each line a question. If the children do not know the answer, they may discuss it with their teammates. If the question is answered correctly, the child stands behind the line and rolls the ball at the empty plastic bottles. Each bottle that is knocked down is worth one point. Stand all bottles that were knocked down up again and the other team tries to answer a question. If the question is not answered correctly, place the card in the pile and ask the other team a different question. Continue playing the game until all the questions have been answered correctly.
