Looking at several passages in the Scriptures like our readings of last Sunday and those of today, it seems like God is always condemning the rich and extolling the poor. A closer look however will show that it is not wealth that is the problem neither is it wealth that God condemns but the attitude towards wealth. Today, the attitude towards wealth that God is condemning is selfishness. "Woe to the complacent in Zion ..." (1st reading). Self-satisfied and unconcerned which is the definition of complacent is the attitude of the rich man in the gospel towards Lazarus. "There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen ... And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus ..." (Gospel). The invitation today is for us to develop a change of attitude towards wealth and replace selfishness with more positive attitudes: "But you man of God, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. Compete well for the faith.." (2nd reading) Our rich friend in the gospel developed change of attitude in hell - when it was late and of no use. "Then I beg you, father, send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers" (Gospel). The selfish, unconcerned man suddenly is concerned about his brothers. Unlike him, we still have the chance for a change of attitude. We can still pursue righteousness and compete well for the faith. What we have - wealth etc. can be used in this pursuit and competition. They can lead us to "lay hold of eternal life, to which you were called" (2nd reading) instead of leading us away from it like the rich man in the gospel or the complacent in the first reading that God said "now they shall be the first to go into exile" (1st reading). So ask yourself today: where will I spend my eternity and how will my resources help me attain this goal? God bless you! 26th Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year C September 29, 2019

Mercy Minute Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time – September 24-25 - An awful thought. A scary reality. I can be good tomorrow, we say. I can deal with that injustice next week, next month, next year, when the time is right, we say. The poor and hungry can surely wait. Well, Amos and Luke say otherwise. God is filled to the brim with pardon and mercy, with compassion, they say. All people that God loves are bound together, they say. The truth is, it is possible to run out of time to do good, God says. Do not be indifferent! So, · What good will I do today? · What injustice can I address this week?

RESPECT LIFE CORNER Faith is a Source of Radiance. Faith in God helps us realize how sacred we are as human beings. We remember how God’s loving gaze is fixed upon us, and how much He desires for us to reach our potential and become all that we are meant to be. Learn, Act, Connect, Pray: Our faith is a source of radiance into every area of life. It helps us see other human beings as gifts, as persons to be respected and loved for their own sake, rather than objects to be used or taken for granted. Pray that this light will radiate to others so that we can effectively reflect God’s love to all we meet, building up a culture of life. AREA EVENTS:

A Novena with Newman “I have a part in this great work; I am a link in a chain”-- Blessed John Henry Newman All over the world, people are preparing to celebrate the canonization of Blessed John Henry Newman on Sunday October 13. This is a time of special grace for us to join together and form links in a great chain of prayer, where we call upon the soon-to-be-Saint to crown our prayers with his intercession in heaven. We encourage you to form links in that chain by joining in our Novena with Newman - nine days of prayerful preparation for the canonization, starting on Friday, October 4th and finishing on Saturday, October 12 on the eve of the canonization. For a copy of the Novena, please visit this website. https://www.newmancanonisation.com/novena
