To God be the glory for the many wonderful blessings He has brought

our way in this year.

God has throughout this year inspired us to greater works beyond our imagination and we have not slowed down. The reach has been wider than we thought or imagined and we give glory to Him alone.

In response to our 2019 annual theme, “NURTURING THE YOUNG GENERATION-THE BIBLE WAY”, we are touching the lives of young ones through our projects like the Open The Book, Next Generation and Youth Impact Project among others.

We chose the theme to reflect on the need to raise the next generation of citizens who understand and live by the Word of God in this present age of human rights abuses among the youth. I wish to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of you for your support to Bible Work during my tenure as General Secretary. By the grace of God, I am retiring at the end of this year and it’s been such a joy to work for and with you in this noble cause of Bible Work.

The journey has been great and full of the blessings of God as we have launched in this year, the first ever New Revised Asante Twi-English Diglot, the New Revised Asante Twi Bible, and the first revision of the Mfantse Bible after 71 years.

To God be the glory. This year, we have continued to pursue Bible engagement

programmes with young people through projects like the Next Gen, Youth Impact Project, ABLI Forum among other to instill in the upcoming generation, the need to interact with the Scriptures for a transformed life.

As I bow out of office, I will continue to pray for the Bible Society of Ghana, the National Council, Management, the entire Staff and the many committed Christians who faithfully support Bible Work.

It is my prayer that you accord the incoming General Secretary the needed support and commitment I have enjoyed in fulfilling our mission to make the Word of God available and affordable and to transform lives.

Amina’s parents have their business around the river, hoping to catch

enough fish to sell so that they could afford for their children welfare. There have been numerous occasions when the family goes to bed without meals. The issue becomes more complex as Amina is denied schooling.

“I was 15 years old when I got married to a 45-year-old man. My parents said the man would take care of me and my siblings since we are extremely poor. I struggle to understand why am getting into this and for days was filled with fear and tears. I felt too young to get married.”

“But the pressure from my mother compelled me to accept since my refusal means they would not be able to afford meals, clothing’s and school fees for younger siblings.”

In marriage, Amina felt her freedom was limited and had do everything to satisfy her.

After six months, she discovered she was pregnant. “I had no knowledge of how to take care of myself and deliver a baby.”

When she was still pregnant, Amina’s husband fell sick was left alone to give birth. This was the beginning of her challenges. “I would like to tell others that when you get married at an early age, things are difficult and you lose all your rights and you suffer a lot.”

NO CHOICE & OPTION

Aisha and her four young siblings became orphans in 2018 and had to live with their grandmother. In the Northern region, life can be harsh especially for an old lady to take care of 5 children. The granny due to the hardship suggested to arrange a marriage for Aisha. “I was 13 when I got married. “My husband was 40 years old.

“When I asked [my grandmother] about school, she said the same man who

Aisha also discovered she was pregnant soon after getting married. “I was hurt when I discovered I was pregnant. I was too young. Instead of getting an education, Aisha spent her days sweeping, washing clothes, washing dishes, fetching water, collecting firewood, working in neighbouring fields, and cooking for her husband in the evenings.

Aisha went into a terrifying and painful labour, which almost resulted in near death experience. “ I wouldn’t like anyone who is 14 to go through what I have been through.”

FACTORS LEADING TO CHILD MARRIAGE

i. Girls tend to drop out of school during the preparatory time before the marriage or shortly after. her new role of wife or mother often comes with the expectation that she will take care of the home, the children and the extended family.

ii. Many girls aren’t in education because schools are inaccessible or expensive, or because parents don’t see the value of education, either because it is of poor quality or not seen as relevant to their lives. with few alternatives, parents often see marriage as the best option for their daughter.

iii. Girls who have no education are three times as likely to marry by 18

compared to girls with secondary or higher education.

iv. There Are Practical And Legal Obstacles On Married Girls’ Way Back To School. Girls Who Live Far Or Have Children To Look After May Not Be Able To Resume Their Education. Sometimes, The Stigma Of Pregnancy Keeps Girls From Returning To School.

ADVOCATING FOR CHANGE

Child marriage is a violation of children’s rights, putting girls at greater risk of dropping out of school, domestic violence and potential life-threatening health consequences of early pregnancy.

Bible Society of Ghana is working to bring an end to child marriage throughout Ghana. According to our 2016-17 Project Communities Demographic and Health Survey, 46 per cent of girls in Northern Ghana are married before the age of 18.

BSG will be instrumental in supporting the Local Government and Traditional Leaders to set up Community By-Laws to ensure that no girl is married before attaining Secondary Education in the communities we work. This includes working with religious groups to identify and annul child marriages, and with local leaders and communities to equip girls and boys with knowledge and skills to reduce the risk of child marriage. Ending child marriage is just the first step on a journey to improve communities in Northern Ghana. “Our goal is to see young girls in the region dream big and explore the opportunities that education can offer”.

The Bible Society of Ghana (BSG) Staff Bible-A-Month Club has donated Bibles to the Ghana Fellowship

of Evangelical Students(GHAFES) in support of their evangelism outreach programmes.

Every month, Staff of the BSG contribute a Bible each from their salaries into a fund known as the Bible-A-Month (BAM) Club as their own contribution to Bible work.

The Staff decided at the 2018 Annual Staff Retreat that the monies contributed towards the BAM Club over the years should be used to support Students in Church Evangelism (SICE). It was to help them distribute to souls won during evangelism. Receiving the Bibles, Mr. Isaac Mensah- Newton, National Director of GHAFES, thanked the Bible Society of Ghana and Staff for the kind gesture in responding to their call. He assured that the Bibles would be put to good use as they

embark on their evangelism. The Bible-A-Month Club (BAM Club) is a group of people who have committed themselves to purchasing a Bible or two for the less privileged ones every month. As a Society we pray and desire to saturate the entire nation with Bibles, at least one in every home.

Creating Bible-A-Month Club in your corporate Institution, Christian Professional Group, Community or Church means you are committed to at least providing one Bible to an individual or a home every month.

You too can form a BAM Club in your Church or your workplace to support the cause of Bible work. All you need to do is contact the Bible Society of Ghana on 0270010298 for more information.

Every little contribution counts to make a difference in the life of a brother or sister. Join the Bible cause now!

God bless you!

Nurturing the Young Generation the Bible way From a Young Person’s Perspective

Nurturing as defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary is giving care and attention to

someone or something that is growing or developing. As our theme states; “Nurturing the young generation the Bible way” implies giving care and attention to the young generation that is growing and developing through ways that please God and are recommended in God’s Word.

We have heard about the role that the home, school, church and social media plays in nurturing the young generation.

For our purpose here, I shall address the issue from the young person’s perspective. It is said that it takes a village to raise a child and therefore we believe that the nurturing of young people is everyone’s responsibility. In this presentation, I will want to raise three (3) concerns for our reflection.

1. Unearthing Potential in Young People

In 1Timothy 4:12 the Apostle Paul tells young pastor Timothy and I quote “Do not let anyone look down on you because

you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity”. (NIV)

You will agree with me that God, in this day and age, is using young people to do great things all over the world with our nation included. There are examples from scripture that God can use anyone inspite of age to accomplish His purpose. The choice of David as king of Israel is a typical example. It also is clear from the scriptures that we have God given potentials as young people which when tapped or utilized, can be good examples to others. Gone are the days when it was assumed that certain positions in society, the home or church could be occupied or operated only by the elderly. Some other typical examples in the Bible where God greatly used young people are Daniel and Joseph.

We, as young people, will like to say that there is indeed a lot of potential in us that has to be tapped or unearthed for the glory of God. Young people need to be given the opportunity to demonstrate greatness. The guidance, counsel, encouragement and impartation of wisdom by the older generation, spending time with young people, helping them identify what is important and leading them on the path to reach these potentials are some of the ways in which we believe we can be nurtured as young people.

Many older people have already walked the path that we as young ones desire to tread. We believe that if we are guided, taught and encouraged, we will indeed reach our fullest potential. There are many young people who are unable to express themselves because growing up,

they were intimidated or prohibited from speaking when they found themselves in the mist of the elderly or in public. We can talk of examples of cultures, traditions, parents and other examples in society who will not choose young people to play certain roles or occupy certain positions because they are believed to be inexperienced.

We believe that times have changed, the world has become a global village, some traditions and cultures have been altered as a result of globalization. We cannot go without mentioning the impact of technology in society today. The young seem to have an advantage over the old in the use of galloping technology. This is seen in the fact that the young get excited about technology and the computer age. The elderly are hesitant and often say we are BBC meaning, born before computer. This is not to suggest that the young have become wiser than the old but a pertinent question that must be answered is: how can the elderly guide and support the young and upcoming generation to make use of these opportunities that are opening up to be a blessing to themselves, family, society, and ultimately our God?

2. Mentoring Young People

From the question just asked, it is evident that one way in which we can be nurtured as young people is through mentoring. We see in the Bible examples of the older generation nurturing the young generation. A typical example is Moses handing down the position of leadership to the young man (Joshua) to lead the people of Israel. In the first place, Moses lived an exemplary life that was worthy of emulation and therefore even when

he was no more, the work of God could still go on. We also see examples of Elijah and Elisha. Elisha had been mentored by Elijah to take over from him as prophet of God. Therefore, when Elijah was taken up to heaven, Elisha was able to cross the Jordan on dry ground following the example he had seen from Elijah. He also turned out a great prophet like Elijah if not greater. From these examples, we see that nurturing is not just in words but in deeds also.

In relating with the older generation, we the young ones do not only learn what is being told us but also from their actions. The older generation needs to model exemplary lives that young people can emulate.

On a rather sad note, either through poor mentoring or waywardness, some young people become lawless and get involved in many vices all in the name of partisan politics. Others get involved

Page 13: Table of Contents · Amina’s Story . 6 2 ýFLDO1HZVOHWWHU will marry you will take you to school,” she continued. But when I got married, I stopped there and then. I could not

with drug and substance abuse, bribery and corruption, just to name a few. They have the confidence to do this because they see the older generation do it and get away with it.

Young people need to be properly mentored by the elderly in order to stay in line and not go wayward. Let us look at an example in the home where a child comes to ask a parent questions about something he or she does not understand. You will find some parents shutting that child up because he or she is asking too many questions. How then are we expected to learn from those that have gone ahead of us if we are not given the opportunity to express ourselves?

Some marriages are unstable, unhealthy and often end up breaking as a result of poor mentoring.

When we look at the context of marriage these days, young people instead of being mentored by the older generation on how to be godly husbands and wives are rather being unhealthily pressured by family members, parents, the society and even the church to get married. We believe that instead of the unhealthy pressure, young people can be nurtured to be the best they can be even as they prepare for marriage.

3. Giving Opportunity to Young People

Some characteristics of being young include having the desire to try out new things, take risks, and exhibit zeal and passion. Many great people that we see today, were all once young people who had passion for certain things and were willing to take risks to achieve them.

We believe that the older generation has a role to play by guiding us to make the right decisions and choices instead of shutting us up or discouraging us. Often, the older generation is concerned about maintaining archaic and outdated traditions and practices and therefore, see the actions of young people as a threat.

We can look at examples of parents forcing children to take up a certain career path without listening to find out what is important to the child. Many children might want to tilt towards a certain direction which to them seems right. Parents, guardians, and society at large owe it a duty to give ear to them in order to build their confidence to make bold and safe decisions.

We do not dispute the fact that young people have a role to play in being nurtured such as accepting discipline, making themselves available to be mentored and recognizing that the elderly are an authority placed over them.

Conclusion

Having said all these, one thing stands out. Young people today are the builders of upcoming generations. They have a duty to themselves and the generation after them. The elderly cannot run away from their duty to nurture the young, however, for them to do that and do it well, they need to depend on the Bible – God’s Word. Nurturing must be done and if it must be done, it must be done well.

Rescue Mission project gives dramatic turnaround for 16-year-old EfiaBible Society “me daase”! (Thank

You Bible Society), Efia said with excitement.

...Efia, a 16 years old girl confided in the team of volunteer counsellors from the Rescue mission project about her deep involvement in prostitution.

She lives with her mother in a suburb of Takoradi. In spite of the developing commercial activities in the area, the area is also noted for sex trade, where teenage girls indulge in prostitution with its high resultant rates of teenage pregnancies and abortions.

Efia was influenced by her two friends in her school who lured her to skip school in order to make time for their clandestine activities. This truancy affected her studies and became a concern for her teachers. It was the timely intervention of her teachers, to the Rescue Mission project team member that saved Efua.

The Rescue Mission team searched for her for four days before they found her. The team took her through some counseling.

She confessed, “my involvement in commercial sex has led to repeated abortions and in some instances nearly cost me my life”. Based on 2 Corinthians 5:17, she decided to turn to a new life. Her school life has been restored and she has

gone back to school. Her teachers have attested to her good conduct since she returned. “For nearly 3 years, I have never been to Church and I want to thank the Rescue team guiding me back to church and giving me a new Bible. This has strengthened my faith as I pray to the Lord to help me overcome all my challenges” she confessed joyfully.

As a result, the teaching staff from her school have really applauded the Rescue mission project as most of the girls are now making positive and informed decisions for their lives.

The Rescue Mission project seeks to equip teenage girls with moral and life skills education to help them make informed decisions leading to a transformed and healthy girl child.

The Bible Society of Ghana and identifiable counseling ministries reach out to teenage girls in schools who easily become victims of sexual exploitation to experience a total transformed life.

The project targets teenage girls between the ages of 12 and 17 years in schools.

Focus group discussions with some of these young people have identified various issues of concern at needs attention in our society today.

The annual Bible Week celebration in the Volta Region took place from Sunday, 3rd – 10th February, 2019

just like in all regions.

The week-long celebration on the theme, “Nurturing the Young Generation- The Bible Way”, was held to bring all churches on one platform to celebrate the relevance of the Bible and its impact in our lives. It was also an opportunity to raise funds to support Bible work.

The Launching was done in Four Evangelical Presbyterian Churches at Anfoega-Akukome, Akatsi, Kpedze and Kpetoe. The week long activities in the entire Volta Region was very colorful as the Ho Area Office was present in the following Evangelical Presbyterian Churches during the Bible Sunday Celebration; Peki-Wudome, Tsito, Vakpo, Aflao, Peki Avetile, Sogakope, Jasikan and Ho Bankoe.

There was an exchange of pulpit where ministers were moved from their churches to others as guest speakers. Speaking on the theme; “Nurturing the Young Generation, the Bible Way” at Elorm Parish E.P. Church, Rev. Peter Sefogah, The Presiding Elder for the Ho Area of the A.M.E. Zion Church, brought to the minds of all that, the only precious legacy that anyone can leave for the young generation was the Word of God.

He said “the young are a priceless inheritance to the family, the church, the community and the nation as a whole and they are precious in God’s sight”. The

young were also advised to be obedient, submissive and be prepared to receive Godly council from the older generation.

The leadership of the Bible Society of Ghana is very grateful to Rev. Emmanuel Antwi Tumfuor, Rev. Seth Mawutor, Rev. Dr. Mawufemor Dzandu, Rev. Samuel Ayiti, Rev. Obed Klu, Rev. Joseph Owusu Agyemang and Mr. David Adzovie who spoke in various churches on behalf of the Bible Society of Ghana. Kofi, a 19 years old boy arrived at his new college very angry because his dad he had loved so much could

not accompany him to school. His father had recently passed away, and Kofi feels God must be blamed for the sudden death.

In School, he joined the Scripture Union and participated in their activities and was able to share his pain and was comforted by the fellowship. He loved the audio scripture session and has participated faithfully. This increased his desire for a Bible until he was given a copy

under the End to End (E2E )programme by the Bible Society of Ghana. “I want to read the Bible for myself,” he said.

After much reading “I realized my emptiness and need for Jesus in my life”. This prompted him to accept Christ. I have relented from my anger at God.

Back home for holidays, Kofi has joined a local church and has been active in the outreach programmes to win more lives for Christ. He uses the Proclaimer so passionately.
