“A sit-down reception would make it a bit difficult to visit with everyone … and we had been to a friend’s cocktail wedding where people were able to mingle more and not just with the guests at their table,” says Lisa.

She says the gallery’s unique two-floor setup would allow for a fun dance area and bar on the upper level, plus a quieter room on the lower floor for sitting and visiting with guests.

The pair met with Thyme & Again catering co-ordinator Bridget McLean and decided to have six or seven different kinds of hot hors d’oeuvres served by waiters, plus a meat carving station with roasted vegetables, with platters of artisan cheese from Ontario and Quebec, local bread, crackers and fruit, and locally grown market fresh veggies and dip, says Lisa.

“We’re most looking forward to the food and having all of our friends together, and being able to mingle. Because it’s not too big it’s going to be an intimate setting,” says Lisa. “We’re excited about seeing how things come together.”

Laura Leonard says one of her

favourite things about her

September 2011 wedding

with David Finkle was a giant jam

session during the reception with all

their musician friends, including

David’s 13-year-old daughter Aurora.

“Dave is a musician and his father’s a musician, so he knows pretty much all the musicians for a large geographic area, and he called in some favours,” recalls Laura. “There were all these awesome musicians who had never played together before, and they just started jamming.”

Among the group was Hintonburg singer-songwriter Andy Mason, who played the couple’s first dance song, The Beatles’

Something, and much of the music for the reception.

These unique touches were a natural fit for the couple, who met at a Lanark music festival in 2009 and decided on a laid-back wedding that combined time-honoured

customs with unusual and modern elements. The pair, both of whom are First Nations,

had a traditional native ceremony performed by friend and storyteller Jo Maple, but Laura opted for a modern dress from Yen’s Bridal and made the jewelry for herself, her mother-in-law, her daughter Charmaine and David’s daughter Aurora.

“It was a bit of a hybrid (wedding),”Laura says.

She adds she knew she wanted a beach wedding, and they found the perfect spot in Belleville’s Sandbanks Provincial Park, on the shores of the West Lake. It’s a special place for David, who grew up in Belleville, and also for Laura.

“(David’s) brother staked out a spot at the park … and we just all showed up and it was great,”says Laura.

About 50 people attended the ceremony and buffet dinner, with friends joining in for the dance portion of the evening. And while it was a relatively inexpensive affair at about $4,000 for the reception, with no assigned dinner seating, the result was a relaxed and fun gathering.

“I loved the way our wedding turned out,” says Laura.
