Dovercourt ad for Summer Camp section in KT, Feb. 20121/2 page colour ad

Kitchissippi Kids love camp. Besides great memories, every kid benefits in multiple ways from summer camp. “Not only do camps provide a fun opportunity to develop a sense of independence but they also allow children to experience things they might not otherwise get a chance to enjoy, such as new sports or skills,” says Jeff Brown, a long-time board member of the Ontario Camping Associ-ation who now serves as one of the organization’s volun-teer Standards Visitors. “For campers of all ages, we can’t say enough about kids needing to decompress from com-puters and social media. Parents should ensure their kids have an oppor-tunity to get outside and experience nature to gain an awareness and apprecia-tion of what is around us, and camp is a great way to make that happen!”

Sure to appeal to inquisitive, adven-turesome kids, the Diefenbunker’s Spy Camp offers children aged 7 to 12 the chance to unleash their inner spy. Campers learn about such exciting things as the art of espionage, how to develop disguises, make and break codes and so much more. Small camp sizes and a variety of age-appropriate programming help make the Diefenbunker a very popular summer camp destination.

Dovercourt Recreation Centre offers the city’s widest selection of day camps for kids of all ages, each run by caring, enthusiastic and well-trained leaders. Commit-

ted to keeping their programming fresh and up to date, Dovercourt is not only offering many

of its most popular camps from previ-ous years, but also several new

camps this year such as Combat Mix, Cheerleading, Circus

Camp with the Cowguys, Junior Lifeguard and Eco-Zookeeper Camp in part-nership with Little Ray’s Reptile Zoo.

Does your child have an interest in acting? Check out Salamander The-

atre’s summer camp pro-grams, where kids learn

and develop with the help of professional actors. Broad-

way Bound allows campers to focus on singing, dancing and

acting while Theatricks introduces kids to a world of action, adventure

and drama techniques. Shakespeare camps allow actors with some experience to stretch their skills to new levels with daily music and sword play along with text, body and voice work. Salamander Theatre’s camps’ help kids truly unplug and remember the mean-ing of play.

There’s always something exciting going on when it comes to JCC of Ottawa Summer Camps. Programs are open to all children, from tots to teens, and include great theme camps, a travelling sports camp that goes on a different active field trip every day and week-long speciality camps including the brand new Radical Reactions – Chemistry & Crime, Powered Up Lego Camp and Photography camp, to name but a few.

What better way to get kids moving in the summer than at Capital City Dance? Offering friendly, talented instructors in a safe and comfortable setting, campers aged 4 - 12 will be exposed to numerous dance styles, including jazz, tap, ballet and hip hop, along with musical theatre workshops and crafts. Everyone can dance – let Capital City Dance show you how!

At the Ottawa School of Art’s summer camps, children aged 6 to 15 will embark on an exciting hands-on exploration of a variety of artistic mediums, themes and styles. Offered at both the OSA’s downtown and Orleans studios, the camps provide all the art supplies needed and captivating lessons from experienced instructors. Established in 1879, the OSA’s mission has always been to deliver top-quality arts education,

making it the ideal summer camp choice for both budding young artists and kids who are eager to try something new.

Campers at the Ottawa Tennis & Lawn Bowling Club enjoy fun tennis and sports programming, thanks to the club’s long-standing focus on providing a quality summer camp experience in the heart of Ottawa. Campers develop new friend-ships and skills while creating memories to last a lifetime. Their experienced, enthusiastic camp staff are well-rounded

athletes who provide great tennis instruc-tion while promoting physical fitness and self-confidence, in an environment that is safe, fun, and supportive. The OTLBC is increasingly becoming the place for fami-lies and individuals to spend their summer leisure hours enjoying the club’s “cottage in the city atmosphere”.

Mothercraft Ottawa’s Funventure Camp is an exciting and safe summer program for children from 3.8 to six years of age. It offers children a wide variety of

Q+AWhat other activities are included in a summer program at 4Cats besides studio work? Summer Camps at 4Cats give kids the chance to learn about many different art styles and medi-ums. Artists attending 4Cats Arts Studio Summer Camps will have the chance to explore many artistic mediums including painting, drawing, the pottery wheel, clay sculpture, polymer clay sculpture, papier maché and more!

I want my child to swim as much as possible during the summer. Will he have the opportuni-ty at ottawa’s JCC summer Camps?Yes! We place a high priority on learning and fun in the pool, so all our day camps and our travelling sports camp include Lifesaving Society instructional swim lessons at no extra cost. In addition, all camp-ers, including those attending specialty camps, enjoy a daily recreational swim in the SJCC’s full-sized outdoor pool.

Q+AWhat does my child need to wear to a Chad Wolfe studio summer dance camp? Dancers should be able to move comfortably. We recommend either form fitting athletic wear or a bodysuit. Recommended footwear includes: both hard and soft soled shoes, such as tap shoes or Irish hard shoes, jazz shoes, dance sneakers, or ghillies. Any hard soled dress shoes and indoor running shoes are also acceptable.

Will my child spend all his time indoors at the Diefenbunker’s spy Camp? In addition to enjoying the many cool spaces in our unique indoor facility, every day our campers enjoy some structured playtime outdoors, featuring supervised spy-themed games.

you have hundreds of kids in Dovercourt’s camps each week. how do you keep them safe? We select our camp staff with great care and provide them with detailed training to ensure they are committed to making camp a safe, positive, and fun experience for all campers. Training includes Standard First Aid, CPR, and High Five: Principles of Healthy Child Development. At Dovercourt, we are very proud of our excellent repu-tation but remain conscious of the need to focus every day on safety and making sure all children feel welcomed. We also work as a team to ensure our risk management procedures are regularly reviewed and refreshed; it’s just one aspect of the rigorous planning and organization that go into delivering a top quality camp experience.

The Ottawa Gymnastics Centre offers campers a safe, active environment in its 27,000 square foot, well-equipped West-boro gymnasium with experienced, qual-ified coaches to lead the fun. Your child will love Greta Leeming Studio of Dance. With fifty years’ experience in offering the best in dance training, Greta Leeming Studio of Dance presents fun, engaging, and instructive summer pro-grams. For more than 20 years, the Ottawa School of Speech and Drama has been helping kids discover the exciting world of theatre with professional actors, directors, musicians, and

choreogr phers. Camps are held in the OSSD’s air-conditioned Westboro studios or at a local community school, and each ses-sion ends with a performance for family and friends. It’s a summer filled with discoveries that can last a lifetime. These popular camps are limited in size so registering early is a good idea.

Canada Agriculture Museum’s summer camps bring the country to kids in the city. In a safe work-ing farm setting, children ages 4 through 14 participate in a variety of age-appropriate games, crafts and hands-on activities to learn about gardening, nature studies and animal care. With several barns and acres of outdoor space, campers enjoy lots of fresh air in a true back-to-the land experience.

At the Canada Aviation and Space Museum’s summer camps, boys and girls ages 6 to 12 will develop a passion for aviation, a love of his-tory, and a sense of pride in our great country. Each camp features awesome games, historical tales of aviation adventures, fantastic crafts, amazing scientific experi-ments and, of course, a breathtak-ing flight over the Nation’s Capital!

Children have enjoyed the Nation-al Capital Region’s YMCA – YWCA camp programs for almost 120 years. The Y’s Neighbour-hood Day Camps for boys and girls aged 3 – 16 keep kids active and engaged in gymnasiums, swimming pools and activity rooms across the city. These camps are a great way to spend the days of summer full of play, fun and friendships.

Q+AWill salamander Theatre’s Broadway Bound and Theat-ricks camps be suitable for my child who has no previous act-ing experience? Absolutely! As Ottawa’s premiere touring company for youth, our camps are designed to build confi-dence and help children explore the dramatic arts in a supportive, non-competitive manner. The emphasis is on having fun and becoming more comfortable in a performance setting so children of all experience levels can benefit.

how flexible is Mothercraft’s Funventure camp? Do I have to sign up for the whole summer? Our enrolment is very flexible -–you can register for one or more weeks as you choose, knowing your children will enjoy a great range of fun, stimulating activities each day, including field trips, arts and crafts and more. Working par-ents love our extended hours, from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm, and the fact that our staff are mature and have lots of experience working with children.

Will my child have a better time at Camp otonabee if they register with a friend? Some campers feel more comfort-able participating with a friend but for many of our campers, camp is a place to make strong new friend-ships. We strive to make our camp a place of belonging where kids can grow and develop by learning new skills in a safe, fun, and nurturing environment.

What makes the Greta leeming studio of Dance’s summer camps so appealing? Children love to dance. They bring that joy to our camp every day. During the camp they make new friends, learn new dance moves and at the end of each week per-form for the parents. We know our campers are having a lot of fun because many choose to return year after year. For our fif-tieth anniversary, our summer camp dancers will get to use our brightly lit, newly built, profes-sional studio. They’ll love it!

Although children can bring their own equipment, the Ottawa Ath-letic Club camps provide equip-ment for every sport and child, including golf clubs (available in a variety of lengths), tennis and squash racquets.

What are some of the things kids learn at ottawa school of speech and Drama camps? It’s not just about putting on a show, which in and of itself gives our campers such an incredible sense of accomplishment; our the-atre camps are really about so much more. They help young peo-ple develop self–confidence, spon-taneity, the ability to work collab-oratively with others and articulate their ideas. The emphasis is on learning creative skills, making new friends’ and exploring ways that theatre can bring ideas to life. Most of all, it is about having fun!

With many years of experi-ence delivering fun, educational programming, we know what appeals to kids. It’s the perfect place for girls to discover the natural world and realize their role in it.

The RA Centre offers a great selection of summer camp options. Day Camps are designed around fun-filled themes and are jam packed with age appropriate games, arts and crafts, outings, spe-cial events and a daily recre-ational swim. For kids who love the water, their Aqua Camps are a dream come true! The RA’s Sports Camps are also very popular. Challenge your child’s imagination with a week of fun and learning, in a bilingual environment, at the Canadian Children’s Museum. National Kids Camps

by March 1st. Camps conclude with a Friday showcase where campers can strut their stuff for family and friends.

The sport of tennis is a lifelong passion for many and summer camp is an ideal way to get started or improve one’s game. The Elmdale Tennis Club offers weekly half and full-day tennis camps throughout the summer at its well-appointed facility, located in the heart of Kitchissippi. With the help of tennis pros and enthusiastic counsellors, kids aged 8 – 14 will learn and practice all aspects of tennis through fun games, drills and match play. Campers will also enjoy a variety of other sports, games and great camp adventures.

Whether you opt for day or overnight camp, for a week or a month, many programs fill up quickly so it’s worth it to start looking at options as soon as possible with your chil-dren to ensure they enjoy an exciting, fun-filled and memorable summer.

Q+AWill my child do more than just play tennis at the ottawa Ten-nis & lawn Bowling Club camp? A: Yes! Our camps offer 3 hours of tennis instruction every day plus swimming in our large onsite pool, beach volleyball, ultimate Frisbee, and many other activities. Camp-ers also receive a delicious lunch each day in our clubhouse Café.

Is it safe for children to be around all the animals at the Canada agriculture Museum’s camps?Definitely! Although ours is a working farm, our barns and fields have been designed with human visitors’ safety in mind. Also, our camps enjoy a minimum 1:8 ratio of staff to campers so children are always well-supervised.

What are the benefits of send-ing my child to a gymnastics camp? Not only are camps at the Otta-wa Gymnastics Centre a great way to get kids more active, we also find that our campers become more confident as they learn new techniques in our gym. Our coaches work very hard to maintain a positive, supportive environment and ensure that all campers feel a sense of accom-plishment at the end of each day.
