On Sunday 5 January 2020, the T6 Carlingford Line will close while it is converted to light rail. Stations will be closed to build the new Parramatta Light Rail.

The single-track T6 Carlingford Line currently has around two train services an hour, which will be replaced with ‘turn up and go’ light rail services.

Expected to open in 2023, the Parramatta Light Rail will connect Westmead to Carlingford via Parramatta CBD and Camellia with a two-way track spanning 12 kilometres. It will include stops at Telopea, Dundas, Rydalmere and Camellia.

A section of the T6 Carlingford Line, between Camellia and Clyde, will not become part of the Parramatta Light Rail and will be retained for future transport use.

Replacement bus service during the T6 Carlingford Line conversion

A new bus route, the 535, will be introduced for customers impacted while the T6 Line is converted to Parramatta Light Rail. The new route will keep customers moving between Carlingford and the Parramatta CBD while the light rail is being built.

Route 535 will run at least every 15 minutes in the busy periods of the day, which will benefit customers who currently only have access to two trains an hour on the T6 Line.

Real-time data will be available online, as well as on third-party apps, so customers can plan ahead.

The bus route will operate between Carlingford, Telopea, Dundas, Rydalmere, Camellia/Rosehill and Parramatta CBD. Customers wishing to travel to Clyde will need to interchange at Parramatta for a rail service.

A standard train fare will apply on the 535, which means customers will continue to benefit from the 30 per cent off-peak discount on standard adult Opal fares.

Accessible Services

All buses for the 535 service will be wheelchair accessible with low level floors and space for wheelchairs, prams or strollers. They also include on-board information displays and audio announcements on all vehicles.

You can use the transportnsw.info trip planner to plan your trip with accessible vehicles.

Look for the symbol located on your trip planner, on timetables available at bus stops and on the side of the bus, to assist you with your public transport planning.

About Parramatta Light Rail Parramatta Light Rail is one of the NSW Government’s latest major infrastructure projects being delivered to serve a growing Sydney. Light rail will create new communities, connect great places and help locals and visitors move around and explore what the region has to offer.

It will connect Westmead to Carlingford via the Parramatta CBD and Camellia with a two-way track spanning 12 kilometres, and is expected to open in 2023. The route will link Parramatta’s CBD and train station to the Westmead Precinct, Cumberland Precinct, the Bankwest Stadium, the Camellia Town Centre, the new Powerhouse Museum and Riverside Theatres, the private and social housing redevelopment at Telopea, Rosehill Gardens Racecourse and three Western Sydney University campuses.

By 2026, around 28,000 people will use Parramatta Light Rail every day and an estimated 130,000 people will be living within walking distance of light rail stops.

FAQsHow much will I be charged travelling on one of the new bus services?

A standard train fare will apply on the 535 service which means customers will continue to benefit from the 30 per cent off-peak discount on standard adult Opal fares. Fares will appear as train fares on your Opal statement.

You will need a valid Opal card or credit card to travel on 535 bus services. For details about off-peak travel or more information on how to obtain an Opal card, visit Opal.com.au

Why doesn’t the route 535 stop at Clyde Station?

Opal data shows that most customers on the T6 Line used Clyde as an interchange point. Terminating the 535 at Parramatta rather than Clyde means customers interchanging for a T1 North Shore & Western Line or T2 Inner West & Leppington Line train, will have access to more frequent services at Parramatta Station.

Customers wishing to travel from closed stations on the T6 Carlingford Line to Clyde Station will be able to interchange at Parramatta for a train to Clyde.

Clyde Station will continue to be served by existing T1 North Shore & Western Line and T2 Inner West & Leppington Line train services.

Will bicycles be allowed on the new bus services?

Bicycles cannot be taken on buses because they are difficult to stow without inconveniencing or potentially endangering other passengers. This will include the 535 bus service.

Are there any changes to parking as a result of the T6 Carlingford Line conversion?

Some parking around future Parramatta Light Rail stops in the Carlingford precinct will be affected. This will include the temporary removal of commuter car parks at existing train stations to allow for the construction of light rail, and minor changes on surrounding streets to enable the construction of some new bus stops. Commuter parking at Carlingford Station is also being upgraded as part of the Parramatta Light Rail project, with investigations underway to improve commuter parking near proposed light rail stops.
